Weaver-in a report on financing of all schools witbin Merced County Of this amount $13005258 was spent on capital outlays and is considered in the nature of an In-veatment leaving $81137620 aa the maintenance cost of the county schools for the year including sixty-two elementary schools four kindergartens three Junior high schools and seven high schools during a school year of approximately 170 days Cost Per Pupil The cost per pupil varied in elementary schools from $4606 at Bal-lico Elemcnary School which has 111 pupils to $19529 at Vineyard Elementary School which has only seven pupils The cost per pupil In secondary or high schools evarled from $18774 in Merced Union High School with 771 pupils to $40170 in Dos Palos High School with 143 pupils Weaver pointed Out that the cost per pupil in schoola having a small average dally attendance is necessarily much greater than it is in schools having a large average daily attendance costa but very little more to conduct a school of from twenty-five to thirty-five pupils than it does to conduct one from ten to twenty pupils" he said the larger schools it is possible to maintain from thirty to forty pupils per teacher while it is not possible to do so In many of the one-teacher schools Cost Is Misleading cost per pupil in those high school districts maintaining Junior high schools Is misleading Dos Palos Joint Union High School District makes no charge to elementary school districts for tuition of elementary school pupils (seventh and eighth grade pupils) attending the junior high school maintained by the high school district therefore the high school is jauin(ainlnc- tha --I 'fit seventh and eighth grade pupils attending the junior high school the Le Grand Union High School District the elementary school districts are charged a tuition of $70 per pupil in average dally attendance for those pupils attending the junior high school This amount however will probably cover a little more than half the actual cost of the education of junior high school pupils since the salaries paid to Junior high school teachers almost equal the total amount collected from the elementary districts Los Banos Pays the West Side Union High School District Los Banos Elementary School District alone is paying for tuition of junior high pupil to the high school The West Side Union High School District collects approximately $2000 from Los Banos Elementary School District for tuition of the pupils attending the junior high school from that district Qn the other hand Los Banos Elementary School District transports the high school pupils and junior high school pupils to Los Banos High School and receives approximately $2000 from the high school district for this service Probably in neither case will the money paid nnywheie near cover the services given cost per pupil to those high school districts maintaining junior high schools has been computed with the addition of the average daily attendance of Junior high school pupils to the high school average daily attendance and also without th addition of the junior high -school average daily attendance and the cost per pupil In average daily attendance in those elementary school districts paying tuition to the high school for junior high school pupils has also been computed" Police Chief At Hanford May Run For Kings Sheriff HANFORD (Kings
