But after the first inning, the Oakland right-hander, a 20-game winner last year, allowed only one baserunner, on a walk, until the ninth. He had retired 18 consecutive batters when Mickey Brantley's one-hopper caromed off his glove for an infield hit. Rick Honeycutt and Dennis Eckersley each got one out in the ninth before a sellout crowd of 45,333 in Oakland. Henderson homered off Seattle ace Mark Langston in the second inning. Henderson snapped a 1-1 tie with a run scoring double in the sixth after Dave Parker got his first AL hit, a two-out single, and took second on Langston 's wild pitch.

Don Baylor delivered an RBI single after Henderson's double and Canseco homered in the eighth. Bell, Toronto's MVP and unhappy designated hitter, became the first player in baseball history to hit three home runs on opening day when he powered the Blue Jays a 5-3 victory over tin Kansas City Royals on Monday. How about a big smile, George. "I've got too many things on my mind to be happy," said Bell, who encored last year's 47-homer season with a solo shot in the second inning, a two-run homer that put Toronto ahead 3-2 in the fourth and a bases-empty homer in the eighth, all off Bret Saberhagen. Things were supposed to be different in Boston, where the Red Sox tired of watching Wes Gardner and Calvin Schiraldi give up 32 home runs in 173 innings a year ago. They acquired fireballing Lee Smith, one of baseball's top relievers, from the Chicago Cubs.

Smith's 36 saves last year were 20 more than the entire Boston bullpen. But after allowing only run and four hits in 13 exhibition outings, he surrendered a two-out, two-run homer to Detroit's Alan Trammell in the top of the 10th inning Monday and the Tigers beat the Red Sox 5-3. "I've never faced Alan Trammell in my life, but that had nothing to do with it," Smith said. "It's a situation at 2-1 where you've got to throw strikes. It's just one pitch, one game.

He hit a good pitch. I didn't hang anything. "I was trying to throw a strike and Alan Trammell hit it. I thought it was a good pitch, down low where I wanted it. I'm not the type of guy to take this home with me.

If I lose a game, I'm not going to jump off a bridge. Hopefully, the fans won't judge me by this outing." Blue Jays 5 Royals 3 Bell, who was fined $1,000 when he balked at DHing during an exhibition game, reached a temporary truce with Manager Jimy Williams shortly before opening day and agreed to move from left field. But he wasn't happy about it. "A lot of people have been hounding me, but it doesn't bother me because I just have to go out and play my game," he said. Bell referred questions concerning his DH role to his agent and Williams said, "I'm not here to discuss the designated hitter.

I'm here to talk about the ballplayer. It's amazing. He's got to be happy, I know that. He's a pure hitter and he hit them off a good pitcher." A crowd of 34,781 attended at Fenway Park.

Both pitchers went nine innings, with Clemens striking out 11 and Morris fanning nine. Clemens gave up six hits, including Matt Nokes' game-tying homer in the sixth inning, and also was called for three balks. "I guess I'm a little lucky," Trammell said after his game-winning homer. "I had never seen him (Smith) before, and I hit a home run off him. I was geared up to hit a fastball because he was behind (in the count) and I know what his best pitch is.

The surgery Monday showed Williams had suffered a strained ligament, and doctors said his prognosis for recovery is good. "Rodney should be back working out in a few weeks and be ready for fall practice," Clemson coach Danny Ford said. "The surgery was successful, and we are all glad of that." Williams, a rising senior from Irmo, was injured in the second play of this past Saturday's Orange-White game at Death Valley. He was helped off the field. Williams isn't the only Tiger having to undergo surgery.

Reserve center Hank Phillips also had surgery in Greenville on Monday. The junior from Spruce Pine, N.C., had bone fragments removed from his wrist. He should be ready to return to practice in a few weeks. Tigers outscore Western Carolina CLEMSON (AP) Catcher Bert Heffernan had five hits, including two triples, scored six runs and drove in five more as Clemson outscored Western Carolina 20-11 in college baseball. Heffernan's effort which included a double and two singles offset a power display by Western Carolina center fielder Skip Nellons, who had three home 1 uns and a single and drove in four runs.

Nellons now has 13 home runs this year. Heffernan tied the school mark Monday night for most triples in a game and became only the fourth Clemson player to score six runs in a game. Nellons' third homer in the sixth inning tied it at 9, but Clemson scored five runs in the bottom of the inning to take a lead the Tigers never lost in running their record to 29-6. Western Carolina is 22-20. tnree-nit Dan tor seven innings and Dale Sveum's two-run homer highlighted a 16-hit barrage as Milwaukee handed the Orioles their worst opening-day loss before 52,395, the largest regular-season crowd in Baltimore history.

Higuera struck out seven, walked one and allowed only one runner past first base. Loser Mike Boddicker gave up four runs in 5 1-3 innings and left with a slightly sprained ankle. Rob Deer hit two RBI doubles, Ernest Riles had three hits and Paul Molitor stole three bases, including home. Sveum's homer off rookie Os-waldo Perez came during a six-run eighth inning.
