-THE DAILY REPUBLICAN, BELVIDERE, ILLINOIS THURSDAY, JULY 16, 1942 Page Five GANGSTER TYPE OF GUNS ON FARM HERE LOUIS REDNER'S TOR UNCOVERS ARMS 'BURIED IN FIELD HALFMILE EAST OF CITY LIMITS CHIEF STEGEMAN NOTIFIES F. B. I. FEDERAL MEN COME TO BELVIDERE AND TAKE THE FOUR GANGSTER GUNS WILL TRY TO TRACE THEM. Last Saturday The Daily Republican gave publicity to a report that a cache of guns such as used by gangsters in holdups and other crimes had been uncovered on a farm in Boone county near Belvidere, the news story saying that the police refused to talk and that any information for the press must come from the F.

B. I. As a matter of fact this newspaper had fairly full details of the case at the time but by request of Chief of Police August Stegeman "covered up" to give time for the F. B. I.

to come to Belvidere and investigate. Now that the agents of the F. B. I. have made such investigation as it was possible to make in Belvidere and have taken away the alleged gangsters' hidden arms, it is not violating confidence to publish such facts as a available.

Cultivator Uncovers Cache' One day last us Redner, who operates the Marshall farm located just east of the intersection of the Genoa road and U. S. Route 20 for the Canning company, telephoned the Belvidere police he had found something of interest to law enforcement authorities while cultivating corn and invited the police to come and see for themselves. Four Gangster Guns Found Chief August Stegeman and Officer Fred Stone drove out to' the nearby farm and the following were turned over to them: One Thompson (Tommy) submachine gun. Two sawed-off shotguns.

One 30 caliber high power rifle. Redner explained to the police that his corn cultivator shovels had plowed into an obstruction in the field near the corner near the intersection of the two roads. He dug a little deeper and unearthed the cache of guns as listed above. The metal was badly corroded planted in the field quite a peindicating that the guns, had been riod of time. F.

B. I. Takes Arms Away Chief Stegeman promptly telephoned the F. B. Chicago headquarters Saturday forenoon and was requested.

to safeguard the arms over the week end and federal agents would be sent to Belvidere the first of this week to investigate. It was requested to give no publicity to newspapers. When the F. B. I.

men arrived in Belvidere and looked over the rusty guns at the police station they are reported to have discovered that the serial' numbers had been filed off. They said they would send the arms to the federal laboratory at Washington, D. 4 where a chemical process would be used to decipher the serial, numbers. Once the serial numbers are in the possession of I. the job of tracing the supposed gangsters' layout will be started.

Found Loaded Clip Uncovering of the cache week recalled the fact that a fully loaded clip of cartridges used in the Thompson submachine gun had been found last May near the spot where the four guns were earthed. Finding of the clip is proof that the gangsters buried their arms on the farm near Belvidere at least several months ago. Police officials here are of the opinion that the guns had been in the possession of some gang of holdup bandits operating in the west or midwest. Do not live in fear of this happening to you.

Just sprinkle a little FASTEETH, the alkaline (non-acid) powder, on your plates. Holds false teeth more firmly, so they feel more comfortable. Does not sour. Checks "plate odor" (denture breath). Get FASTEETH at any drug store.
