Sunday, September 26, 1999 Entertainment The Index-Journal. Greenwood, S.C. 3C Victim of date-rape finds compassionate man at last DEAR I ABBY r0 Abigail Van Buren JJ Syndicated columnist II ters during October, National Adopt-a-Dog Month, and weat North Shore Animal League would like to encourage them once again to visit their shelters and take home one or more of the thousands of homeless dogs and puppies. These animals have years of unconditional love to give to kind and caring animal lovers. Abby, people can adopt from shelters any time, but October is dedicated to making it a better world for man's (and woman's) best friend a canine pet.

This visit to a shelter during Adopt-a-Dog Month will not only save a life, but will also bring a lifetime of love and happiness to both the needy animal orphan and the kind of individual who takes a pet home. Thank you, Abby, for your compassion and love of animals. MARGE STEIN, NORTH SHORE ANIMAL LEAGUE DEAR MARGE: Thank you for the timely reminder. For individuals and families interested in acquiring some canine companionship, I can't think of a more opportune time than National Adopt-a-Dog Month. Arf arfl DEAR ABBY: 1 have been married for 37 years.

My wife likes to go out every day, seven days a week. I like to go out two to three days a vek, and would to compromise and try the "middle" about four times a week. My wife is very energetic and will not meet me in the middle. What do you recommend? BOB IN PLANTSVILLE, CONN. DEAR BOB: How about this for a compromise: Tell your wife that she's welcome to go out by herself or with friends a few days a week, and that you will join her for the other three or four days.

That way, she gets seven days out and you get three or four. ASLEEP AT THE WHEEL has a new record out called "Ride With Bob." The album features the group doing Bob Wills tunes with a number of country stars. From left to right: Jason Roberts, Michael Francis, Ray Benson, Cindy Cashdollar, David Sanger, David Miller, Chris Booher. Asleep At The Wheel: Going for a ride with Bob DEAR ABBY: After I read the letter from the young woman who had been at 21, I felt compelled to write. She was wondering if she should tell her boyfriend about it.

When I was 16 and a virgin, I was date -raped. For many years, I didn't know why it had happened. It took a long time to slowly heal frorh the incident. Finally, I met a wonderful man with whom I started tb cultivate a relationship first on the telephone, even though we both lived in the same small town. On our first date, I told him about what had happened to me 10 years earlier.

I cried and he held me, letting me know that he was sorry that it had happened. That wonderful man and I have been happily married for more than a year. He's my best friend, and I don't regret telling him. In fact, he helped me to let go of so many bad memories and to focus on our future. A truly understanding man will be your comfort if you are truthful.

NO PRISONER TO THE PAST DEAR N.P.: Your supportive COUNTRY ALBUMS From fir Aboard Magazine By The Associated Press 1 "Come On Over," Shania Twain. Mercury. (Platinum) letter is well worth space in this column. I'm pleased your story has such a happy ending. One of the main reasons why the vast majority of rapes are never reported is the feeling of shame on the part of the victim.

Rape is never the victim's fault. Crisis counseling is enormously helpful for victims of sexual assault, and it's as easy to find as picking up the telephone and asking information for the number of the local rape hotline. It can help to heal psychological wounds even years after the assault, and that's why I recommend it so strongly. QUIBBLES 'N BITS Tight Lines Alabama's guitar whiz Jeff Cook is getting his own television show. But he'll be casting for his supper instead of singing for it. See, Jeff's an avid fisherman and has been named the Alabama State Fishing Ambassador by the past four governors of Alabama.

Jeff also conducts a lot of bass fishing tournaments that benefit children's charities. So The Outdoor Channel decided that a fishing show teaming Jeff up with fishing expert Tom Mann would be a great idea. The show begins airing in October. On the new "Chris Gaines: Greatest Hits" album, "Chris" is played in the cover photo by a model named Brian. Garth, of course, is doing all the singing as "Chris." The reason "Chris" looks like Garth now is, says Garth, because "Chris" nearly died in a car crash in 1992 and "had to have extensive plastic surgery." 7:30 A Rewrvatiora tor the Millennium mm rnmr a as KLUt 3 I KtArv pc-u Frl.

Oh, in case you're wondering who the "Bob" is that we're all riding with, why it's Bob Wills, of course, the "King of Western Swing." He was, Benson says, "the Elvis Presley of Texas. Bob was as big in Texas as any pop or country star of the day. His influence went on to shape country music and rock 'n' roll in Texas and throughout the world." In fact. Wills, who died in 1975, was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this year, right alongside Bruce Springsteen, Paul McCartney and Billy Joel. That's one of the reasons Ray wanted to make "Ride With Bob," even though one of the six Grammy's Asleep At The Wheel have garnered was for their 1993 album "Tribute to the Music of Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys." But the new album, Ray says, "is as much about giving the young guys a chance to record these songs as it is about keeping Bob Wills' music out there." Well, both the "young guys" and the not-so-young guys do a great job here, and, more importantly, they do it together.

I mean, what are the chances of hearing the Squirrel Nut Zippers play with Merle Haggard? But there they are on "St. Louis Blues," the W.C. Handy classic that Bob Wills had in his act for years. And it's awesome. Likewise, Willie Nelson hooks up with The Manhattan Transfer for "Going Away Party." Plus, when The Dixie Chicks take on "Roly Poly," well, Natalie Maines just nails that Texas rockabilly sound.

TNN offers a preview of the album, including some historical footage of Wills performing, on "The Making of Ride With Bob." The initial airdate was Sept. 23 at 10 p.m., but it airs again Wednesday at 8 p.m..
