Entertainment Friday, September 17, 1999 2B The Index-Journal, Greenwood, S.C. It's back! Kelley leads resurgence of hour-long TV drama 'Salesman' gets a rest before he has to travel NEW YORK (AP) The Tony-winning revival of "Death of a Salesman" will close Nov. 7 to give its star, Brian Dennehy, time to rest up for the London production of the classic Arthur Miller drama. The revival, starring Dennehy as salesman Willy Loman, has been playing on a reduced schedule of seven performances a week for several months, spokesman Jim Byk said Thursday. Broadway shows usually do eight The production also shut down for the week before Labor Day to give the cast a chance to recharge its batteries for the final weeks of the run.

Dates for the London engagement have not yet been set, but are planned for sometime next year, according to Byk. LOS ANGELES (AP) Has prime time returned for the television drama series? David E. Kelley, creator of this year's Emmy winner, The Practice," thinks so. Kelley said it's a sign of good health for TV dramas when there are too many worthy shows to fit into the slate of five Emmy nominees for best dramatic series. When the half-hour sitcom reigned just a few years ago and some critics were writing obituaries for hour-long series, the Emmys had to pad the drama category just to fill up the nominations, said Kelley, whose courtroom show "The Practice" won best drama for the second year in a row.

Kelley also scored an Emmy first: He won the comedy category, too, with "Ally McBeal," an hour-long comic series with dramatic undertones. "I do feel that right now it's a pretty strong year for the one-hour form," Kelley said. In the years when A. Law" was a perennial favorite for best dramatic series, there generally were only three or four sure nominations, with another program or two thrown in to round out the category, Kelley ABC photo The cast members of "The Practice are, foreground, Dylan McDermott, back row from left, Kelli Williams, Steve Harris, Camryn Manheim, Michael Badalucco, Lara Flynn Boyle, Maria Sokoloff and LtsaGay so many good dramatic shows on television. "When 'NYPD' first came on in '93, there was not a lot of hope for hour dramas at that time," Franz said.

The interest seemed to be going toward the half-hour shows, and people thought it was a dead deal." "NYPD Blue" helped rekindle the genre, and now "we're experiencing a resurgence in dramatic television," Franz said. The proliferation of cable channels looking for long-term programming to grab audiences also has fed the dramatic comeback. "In this 50-plus channel universe, these many networks found they could attract viewers with knee-slappers but they couldn't keep them," said Thomas O'Neil, author of "The Emmys." "They're keeping them with one-hour news shows and one-hour dramas," O'Neil said. The pendulum has begun to swing the other way from the days when half-hour situation comedies ruled the prime-time roster. The new fall schedule, for example, is heavy with dramas or other hour-long shows.

The hour-long drama gives producers more leeway than comedies to build and sustain stories and engaging characters, said Chris Albrecht, president of original programming for HBO, which airs some of TV's most acclaimed shows, such as "The Sopranos," "Oz" and "Sex and the City." David Chase, creator and producer of the "Sopranos," agrees that dramatic TV series are doing well, but doesn't think their golden age is at hand. "There's always been excellent writing on TV," Chase said. said "Now, it's not the case," he said. "There's going to be one or two or three good dramas left off just because there are so Primetirne TV today is loaded with perennial contenders such as "ER," "Law Order" and "NYPD Blue." All three are previous best drama winners that lost for the second straight year to "The Practice." One of last year's nominees, "The X-Files," was pushed out of the running this time by "The Sopranos," the first cable series nominated for best dramatic show. Other dramas that could have been contenders this year, if not for Miss Nevada, Miss Virginia win preliminaries ATLANTIC CITY, N.J.

(AP) Miss Nevada Gina Giacinto and Miss Virginia Crystal Lewis captured top honors Thursday as preliminary competition concluded in' the 79th annual Miss America' Pageant. The SI contestants in Saturday's pageant were divided into three groups for the preliminaries. Giacinto, a 24-year-old who works as a Radio City Rockette in Las Vegas, won the swimsuit competition to claim a $500 scholarship. Lewis, 21, of Newport News, sang "I Believe In You and Me" to win the talent contest and a $2,500 scholarship. She attends Campbell University.

The results of the evening wear category are not revealed. the crowded field, were "Chicago Hope" and HBO's "Oz." "We're probably in a golden age for the hour-long series drama," said Gerald Isenberg, a former producer who teaches television and film at the University of Southern California. "There probably has not been another time for the hour drama where there's been that much good stuff on." A handful of creative producers such as Kelley, "Law Order's" Dick Wolf and Steven Bochco, who created "Hill Street Blues," "L.A. Law" and "NYPD Blue," have been heavily responsible for revitalizing the hour-long drama. Kelley's other efforts include "Picket Fences" and "Chicago Hope." Dennis Franz, who won his fourth Emmy for best actor in a drama series for "NYPD Blue," said he cannot recall when last there were Son's dream of wedding dance is nightmare for divorced mom DEAR ABBY: My son is marrying a wonderful lady in a few short weeks.

My problem is, he's insisting that I dance which we can point to with pride, some of which are deplorable. Although we can learn from the mistakes of the past, we cannot change them. We can change only the future. Flawed as it may seem to be, the United States of America still stands as the No. 1 land of opportunity in the world.

P.S. Let's hope the fall television schedule is a temporary patchwork quilt you mention is a product of that exclusion and to think otherwise is looking at reality through rose -colored glasses. A glaring example of that exclusion is here in Los Angeles. It is common knowledge that the fall television schedule has all but eradicated any sense of inclusion, with programming almost exclusively comprising white actors. Los Angeles is one of the largest multicultural cities in the world! I certainly agree with you about how this world would be a more hospitable place if attitudes were more inclusive, and I recognize the efforts of individuals and organizations that work toward that goal.

His father lied, would bring his girlfriend into our home with us there, never paid bills, even borrowed our son's cell phone, ran up $900 in charges and refused to pay. When an important event is going on in my son's life, I'm there and always civil to his father. But I will not let that man touch me ever again.

Please help me. I want to attend the wedding, but I can't stand the idea of my ex touching me. I'm shaking as I write this. SHAKING IN HARRISBURG, PA. DEAR SHAKING: Stop shaking and speak up! Tell your son and his fiancee that you will not, under any circumstances, dance with your ex.

You reasons are valid; perhaps your sen needs to be reminded of them. DEAR ABBY: You stated to "Roman Catholic in New Jersey," who talked about a time in years past where we in America were more "tolerant and caring" toward our neighbors, that you remember a gentler time when "America pictured itself more a melting pot and less a patchwork quilt." A gentler time for whom? Certainly not for ethnic minorities, whoever they happened to be at any time in our history. Whether they be Irish, Italian, Chinese, Japanese, Hispanic, African-America, all were and some remain excluded from mainstream America. The Instead go into the attic with a flashlight to find the source of the leak. Water that finds its way in.

will typically seep under the plywood sheathing, hit a rafter and then run down along the bottom edge of the rafter. To interrupt the flow of water, nail a small wood block to the underside of the rafter. Twist the block at a slight angle, then place a bucket underneath. As the water runs down the rafter and hits the wood block, it will be diverted into the bucket For a really heavy leak, install a second block and bucket farther down on the rafter to catch any water that gets by the first block. With the bucket in place, trace the leak back to its point of origin.

Make note of its exact position so you can locate it from outside once the rain has ended and the roof has dried out. QUICK TIP An easy way to make a sturdy, virtually indestructible workbench top is to use a flush-panel solid-core door. A 30-inch-wide by 80-inches-tall lauan mahogany door costs about $50. Seal all surfaces with two coats of polyu re thane. If the bench-top isn't going to be subjected to heavy pounding, you can sometimes get by with a hollow-core door, a 30-by-80-inch lauan model runs about $25.
