MillerJ Current events came in for a share of the time and there were a number of much interest given. At the conclusion of the program Mrsl Steele served delicious refreshments consisting of a salad course with turkey, hot rolls, coffee and sweets. Mrs. Steele is always a most genial hostess and this meeting was one of unusual pleasure. V.

ENORMOUS VOLUME OF MAIL MATTER. Jwblry Pity the Poor Postman and Have Some Patience Now. The public should exercise much patience this week in regard to the mail. The postoffice people are simply buried beneath the vast amount of mail matter. The Statesville postoffice has never known such a volume of business.

Every man and every extra man is on duty and Postmaster Raymer himself is making heroic efforts to see that the matter keeps moving. Many of these very same ladies have visited the jail, the cotton mill sections, county home, with open hand and well filled baskets, and the real spirit of Christmas is abroad in the land. In honor of Mrs. Ross McElwee, bride of a few weeks, Mesdames J. H. and W.

H. McElwee and Mrs. D. S. Thomas, at the home of the latter, gave one of the most brilliant receptions of the early winter, last Thursday afternoon.

The home was gay with holly and Christmas decorations everywhere. The cards were received by little Sarah and Billie McElwee while Mrs. E. S. Pegram welcomed the callers, with Mrs.

F. F. Steele also receiving in the hall and Miss Katherine Brawley showing the ladies to the cloak room. From the hall Mrs. B.

F. Long introduced the guests to the receiving line composed of Mrs. J. H. McElwee, the bride, and Mrs.

W. H. McElwee, then Mesdames. D. S.

Thomas and E. O. Heritage. From the parlor, beautiful in yellow and white with exquisite narcissus in every corner, the ladies were shown to the dining-room by Mesdames Wm. Wallace and R.
