Courier as he enjoys the home paper very much Pvt Ruben Yager who is stationed at Fort Sill Okla spent from Sunday evening until Monday noon jvith home folks travagant One Chicago lady who had worked 38 years as a librarian retired in order that she might catch up on her reading The highways in the country seem to move around a lot these days Most ny by-road now seems like a boulevard so maybe an open game season has some good effects after all Noticed some cloud hanks hovering around the horizon as this was written and of course one wonders if the weatherman has some of change! in store for us in this part of the state We be surprised because we certainly have enjoyed a fine fall up to date haven't we? Well next Tuesday Is election day and that is one of the things for which our soldiers are fighting on the battlefields of the world Since that is the case we folks on the home front ought to think enough of the privilege we have to visit the polls and exercise our right and privilege you think? In a letter to Claude parents Mr and Mrs Carl North Mrs Claude North of Worthing England says blackout has been partly lifted now really quite nice to be able to go out and see a few tights shining We still have a few flying bombs over but not so many as we used '16 (thank goodness) but when they do come over people hear them until they have passed over They make a crater 25 feet deep and the blast is terrific Dad is now working on the bombed houses hoping to have 860000 houses ready' for the people (in the bombed areas) to be able to go into by Christmas FOOTBALL SCORES ON OTHER GRIDIRONS HOLLAND LEADING BOND PURCHASER Leading war bond purchaser among the civlllag personnel of the Harvard Army Air Field is the title bestowed upon Mrs Patricia A Holland whose husband Staff Sgt Ralph Holland is a weather forecaster For the past 26 months Mrs Holland has been buying bonds by deductions from her pay envelope and at present 456 of her pay is deducted each mopth Well aware that buying war bonds is a patriotic duty as well as a saving measure Mrs Holland says have more faith in wr bond saving than In any other Damage here was not extensive this and the prank that seemed to appeal to all of the youngsters was soaping the windows Every business house in town received its share of this Bort of decoration Smaller children contented themselves by going from door to doQr chanting "Tricks or treats money or eats" Mr Dieringer and daughter Mrs Clair Fltzke moved to the Harvard Courts this week The Dan Brehm family who purchased the property the vacated the former George Schwenk house expect to move to their new home aa soon as it can be redecorated Mr and Mrs JJenry Dufner returned last Wednesday morning from a trip to Sioux City and Boone Iowa where they visited relatives and friends Word from Lt Robert Frank states that he la now in India at Lincoln one is led to believe that Nebraska's Cornhuskers are on the road back They have been on the short end of football results for so long that the helghths are quite a distance and the path to them may still be rather rough The Express ditched them a couple of weeks ago but the boys came right back and upset the Mizzou applecart In Lincoln Saturday afternoon 24 to 20 Must have been a real battle at that The Japs took an awful shellacking this last week in Philippine waters and nearby seas Forty-six ships were said to have been lost by the Japs in the sea fighting which raged there for several days Now we are in possession of strong beach-heads on the Philippine Island of Leyte and our fleet seems to have more than wrecked the plans of the Jap admirals for their fleet is scattered and fleeing toward home base The Nipponese may have had a lot of preparation in China but they are learning some hard lessons when they try to tell our fellows and our fleets what to do One of the big writers for a large syndicate anent the coming elections says that he believes that most of the sounder reforms put through by the Roosevelt administration would have come about no matter who was president the last twelve years but that with another man at the head of the government we most likely would not have had all the useless extravagance chargeable to the New Deal He thinks a change now to a new and vigorous administration would serve to consolidate the gains already made and eliminate alt the abuses set up under the New Deal There are many who echo those same sentiments Wonders will never cease and many a new one is going to show up after this war with one of those we happened to read about the last few days being the new freight car shifting arrangement at Lincoln On one side of what railroad folks call the hump there are 36 tracks which spread out so that freight trains or parts of them which will be sent to Chicago to the west north south or to many intermediate sections of the country are made up The allows the cars to be sent unerringly to the spot' where cars designated for any particular area are being assembled Into trains This area trackage has room enough to put 930 cars Two men sit In the yardnikaters control (Continued on Page 4) HELLO WORLD Born to Mr and Mrs Vern Boswell (Esther Llnck) a sbn Robert Charles on Oct 31st at Van Nuys Calif Sgt and Mrs Glenn Yost returned to Fort Francis Warren Wyo Wednesday heard anyone say much as to how the corn which has been picked for several days is standing up We imagine though that most of it must not be causing any trouble for one seldom sees where any of that piled up has been moved and generally he can notice that the pile h4 grown in the last four or five days A lot of it has already been husked and there is a lot of it yet to be gathered The recall of Gen Stillwell in China seems to verify the reports that there was entirely too much squabbling in that part of the world between the men who were supposed to be the leaders Maybe as the general has long been known was more nearly right than any of us at home know At any rate it is certain that we have been going backwards over there for some months when we should have been going the other way Multiple births in the are not the novelty that many of us have always thought apparently Altogether there have been nine sets of quadruplets born to parents and on know how many triplets or sets of twin babies The parents of the nine sets of quads say that maintaining a home for four normal healthy youngsters of the same age is no little job and that the matter of expense can keep nose on the proverbial grindstone USO DIRECTORY SUPPER POSTPONED Due to the precautions taken to prevent scarlet fever epidemic the United Church has postponed their Election Day supper to a later date Watch for further announcements READING ROOM HOURS 11:00 a to 12:30
