So we do theme shows," says Goosenberg. Even more obscure are the names of network daytime vice presidents and other executives. But, oh, how much more important, they have all the decision-making power.

So the defection of Michael Brockman, longtime CBS daytime executive vice president, to ABC is big news. He's now president of a new ABC division incorporating daytime, children's and late-night TV. This move could influence the future of network daytime competition. ABC had been a strong No. 1 at the beginning of the '80s under the leadership of former ABC Vice President Jacqueline Smith (and that phenomenon known as Gloria Monty's Luke-and-Laura "General By 1983, ABC's strong ratings lead began to erode, and CBS became the No.

But don't forget the 1967 film "Casino Royale," which had several people playing Bond, including Woody Allen and David Niven.

Even before, when Bond made his debut as a TV character, he was played by Rod Steiger. Q. My husband and I recently saw the movie "Messenger of Death" with Charles Branson. There was also an actor named John Ireland in the film. We have seen Ireland and Branson together before in "10 to Midnight." Is he by any chance the son of Jill Ireland and Charles Branson? F.

It's "Flix," VH-l's weekly half-hour movie show with a difference. Unlike the weekly review shows hosted by the afore-mentioned pairs of critics Ebert the Movies," "At the Movies" and "Sneak "Flix" is basically a featureinformation show. "We're not a thumbs up, thumbs down kind of show," says "Flix" executive producer and VH-1 news director Ellen Goosenberg.

"We want to be a guidebook for anyone who loves movies and has a fascination about how they're made and the people who make them." "Flix" also differs from the other shows by aiming at a very direct, specific audience: the 25-39 crowd, those ubiquitous, demographically pleasing baby boomers. Not so coincidentally, that's also the target audience for VH-1. "We decided we wanted to expand our entertainment coverage to look at movies the way we look at music. So we came up with a movie feature show for hip, thinking adults," says Goosenberg. According to Goosenberg, "You're not going to be seeing much on John Hughes' teen-age movies or on 'Nightmare on Elm Street, Part 5 on We know our audience quite well.

We'll go with a movie if we think it's something they'll like even though it sometimes turns out to be a bomb. For example, we went after "The be- METAL SERVICES, INC. ABC owns most of its own soaps, while the CBS soaps are all owned by Procter Gamble or Bill BeU. So ABC has always had a freer hand in supervising its shows, and they've taken advantage of it.

Roughly speaking, the ABC soaps are Brockman's to play with. And some do indeed help. "AMC," formerly second or third in the ratings, has been experiencing a ratings slide during the past few years. The congenial Stephen Schenkel was recently cut as executive producer and was replaced by longtime ABC hand Felicia Minei Behr. Behr was a producer of "Ryan's Hope" and worked on "AMC" in the '70s as an associate producer for ABC.

"OLTL," under Paul Rauch, looks strong and has the best casting in daytime among its young female leads, who include Jessica Tuck as mercurial Megan Gordon, Fiona Hutchinson as nasty Gabrielle Medina and Jensen Buchanan as benign heroine Sarah Gordon. Now that the fantasydisaster plot known as Eterna has been wisely blown off, the show really has a chance to make tracks. Another far-out plot, the Dragonbone mystery on "General Hospital," is thankfully drawing to a close. It's a good chance for ABC to recoup.
