MONDAY, OCTOBER 4, 2010 The Modesto Bee www.modbee.com Georges Charpak Joe Mantell Physics Nobel winner Got Oscar nod for 'Marty' Georges Charpak, who won the 1992 Nobel Prize in Physics for inventing a device to sift through the billions of hurtling subatomic particles liberated by collisions in atom smashers, opening the way for discoveries on the nature of matter, died Wednesday in Paris. He was 86. His death was announced by France's research ministry. Particle accelerators, popularly known as atom smashers, whip subnuclear particles such as protons and electrons to high speeds and then force them to collide. The collisions generate a storm of particles.

Some of these short-lived particles have not existed since the Big Bang created the universe nearly 14 billion years ago, and identifying them and charting their behavior have been principal goals of modern high energy physics. With his invention, the multiwire proportional tracking chamber, Charpak vastly improved the ability of physicists to measure and record what goes on inside particle accelerators. Earlier detectors, such as. the cloud chamber and bubble chamber, depended on taking photographs of the tracks left by particles as they emerged from collisions. Actor Joe Mantell, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in the 1955 film "Marty" and delivered one of film's most famous lines in "Chinatown," has died.

He was 94. Mantell died of pneumonia Wednesday at Providence Tarzana Medical Center in Tarzana, said his daughter Cathy. Mantell received an Academy Award nomination for best supporting actor in 1956 for his performance as Angie, the best friend of Ernest Borgnine in "Marty." His oft-repeated question to his sad-sack friend "Well, what do you feel like doin' to- was one of the film's most memorable lines. In 1974's "Chinatown," in which he played the partner of Jack Nicholson's detective character, Jack Gittes, spoke the film's famous last line: it, Jake. It's Chinatown." Mantell was a familiar character actor on television, with roles in such series as "Alfred Hitchcock Presents," "Barney Miller," "Mannix," "'The Twilight Zone" and "The Untouchables," and the early 1960s sitcom "Pete and Gladys." He also appeared in such movies as "The Sad Sack" in 1957, "The Birds" in 1963 and the Chinatown sequel "Two Jakes" in 1990.
