a proposal to get rid of 117 million gallons of wastewater through a injection About 200 people attended a public hearing sponsored by tiie Kansas Department of Health and Environment on Monday at Wichita's City Hall The question being considered was whether the state should approve an application by the owners of the waste site to drill a disposal well as part of their cleanup plan KAY SAID his remarks at the hearing were intended to be They have been sent in a letter to KDHE Secretary Barbara Sabol who will decide whether to grant the permit Kay added Sabol said she planned to decide by late October whether to grant the permit Nothing she heard in hours of testimony Monday was she said FURLEY 10C Col 6 Transportation John Kemp to start construction of a highway that would bypass Marion Predictably the mood in Marion was less ecstatic know that there has to be a way we can change this by going to the governor's said Marlin Buchholz head of Chamber of Commerce just hung our heads We have two yean and we will write If Kemp is concerned he showing it decision has been he said Tuesday adding that Gov John Carlin too has been notified His department did Its Ant study on changing the highway route in 1953 Then it tried to go ahead with the plan in 1966 1971 1974 and 1975 Each time opposition from Marion businesses derailed the effort IN 198 the state got a godhead to build the bypass but it ran out of road construction money before any dirt could be moved Meanwhile the old 15-mlfe stretch of US 56 which some say is one of the most scenic roads in the state continues to cany about 3000 cars and trucks a day taking them mi the ups the downs of its curves and the meandering 17 mile stretch through Marion HIGHWAY 10C Col 2 By Paul Goldberg Staff Writer It's a tale of two cities One is Marion a town whose business leaden have spent 30 yean trying to keep state highway officials from moving US 56 a well-traveled highway that runs down Main Street The other is Hillsboro a town less than 10 miles to the west where officials have been fighting to get US 56 to bypass the slow traffic of Main Street then pass a mile north of Hillsboro right by its industrial park On Tuesday Marlon lost the battle as Kansas Department of Transportation officials announced plans to build a new 14-mile stretch of UJS 56 that would pass about a mile north of central commercial district and slip right by the industrial park Hillsboro leaders see as a key to prosperity Work should start in June 1986 FOR MOST natives the rivalry between the two towns starts in junior high where the hottest athletic contest is between the Marlon Warriors and Hillsboro Trojans For many local politicians and business leaden It continues into adulthood "It made my day this Hillsboro Mayor Harold Wiebe said Tuesday after learning about the decision by Secretary of When Got the Flint Hills Kansas Flaunt Them Lt a x-c I I gj I 15 I 15 5 jf 111 1 Bob Getz were all over the place Some watched me watch them A few stood knee-deep in ponds Despite the traffic whirring by a couple hundred feet away I felt remote isolated happy I even contemplated universal truths I help it Is it I wondered boring to be a cow? Or are cows too dumb to be bored by their lifestyles? Think about it Cows play prowl chirp fly swing from limb to limb chase their tails or lie on their backs playing with rubber balls and empty spools They just stand there Even in water they just stand there like dummies Pigs have more fun I walked on Insects made all sorts of noises Birds chirped The wind blew through the bushes And the hills rolled and stretched for miles blending hazily into the distant horizon By the time I got back in my car I felt Lookout Point Park and let the hills cure your lib So how about it Kansas Turnpike Authority and state officials? Why not create a place or two on the turnpike where people can pull over and contemplate the grandeur of the Flint Hills? The turnpike toll tickets would be a perfect place to publicize the Lookout Points There Is nothing at all on the back of the cards In fact it be a nice touch if on the back of the tickets there also was a wealth of happy helpful information for travelers such as a turnpike indicating how far it is between service areas and towns and maybe instructions about what to do In case your car breaks down on the turnpike etc? That ought to Impress visitors I mean worse when you're traveling than not knowing how for it is to the next bathroom? IN THE FLINT HILLS Thoreau had his pond We have our Flint Hills BeautifuL Soothing I keep forgetting how spectacular the Flint Hills are I need to visit them more often They're not Just scenery ther-tapy Balm for the soul and alL You get out among these hills you feel little like Mother Nature is embracing you engulflng you giving you a big hug Welcome to the Flint Hills Stop and get your soul cleansed In by 10 tense out by 11 purring If these hills calm you down' nothing can And if you watch out they might even turn you into a poet I promise From now on no more jokes about the sign on the turnpike near Cassoday that says Scenic Flint Hills Next 31 Actually the hills are so beautiful the Turnpike Authority ought to figure out a way it could boast "Enjoy the scenic view of the hills is especially spectacular? They have to be anything fancy Just places where people could safely pull off relax enjoy the awe-inspiring panorama snap pictures meditate or talk to the cows I drove up the turnpike Monday scouting for locations It looks to me as though a perfect spot is the area by the pens" The basic layout already exists there and conveniently the cattle already serves as an overpass across the turnpike so people could enjoy the view from either side Another advantage to this location is that there are areas where a person can go walking and feel like the hills I parked there myself and walked all around That was one of the cows Beyond the fences in the hills cows Flint Hills for the next 31 miles or your toll money will be happily refunded" One problem One catch On the interstate if you stop to smell the roses the sunflowers the cowpens or just the fresh air you risk having your vehicle flattened like a beer can by some mammoth 18-wheeler behind you no place to pull over no place on the turnpike to stop sit enjoy and applaud the view So I have a modest proposal What if the state built one or two Lookout Points along the turnpike where the 4 'U.
