George Stetabrenner is a Jerk Randy Brown the Wildcats Everyone knows the proper nickname for Arizona State is the Sun Devils Even me I just can't seem to get it right in print It is the Sun Devils who will be in town May 7-9 for a three-game aeries with Wichita State It is the Sun Devils who are the No 1 team in college baseball Go Sun Devils! George Stetabren-aer left makes Charles Finley look good George Stetabrenner is a Jerk There I said it and I'm glad It easy One reason it was easy is that George Stetabrenner is 1200 miles away Most of the time If he comes any closer I have an alarm that goes off Eyeryone should have an alarm that goes off whenever George Stetabrenner gets within 1200 miles Anyway it is axiomatic for sports columnists that ydu can call someone a Jerk with i impunity if you're the proper distance away After all I have to cover Ms ball team I have to deal with him on a daily You can't say the Shocker baseball team doesn't have a home stadium any more The Shockers have had one of the finest fields since their park was completed three years back And it boasts one of the finest scoreboards in the college game But there has been no stadium only rickety risers on flatbed trailers hauled ta for the It looks as if Lawrence-Dumont Stadium has broken the sprit of another promising pitcher Don Kainer was released from the Denver Bears by the parent Texas Rangers a couple of days ago Just last season he was one of the better-looking minor-league prospects In fact when Wichita was the farm team of the Rangers last season Kainer was chosen to be the opening-day starter an honor symbolic of the No 1 or at minimum a solid position nn the staff But Kainer was bombed out of the game at Lawrence-Dumont that April evening in 1961 And he was also bombed out of the game in every subsequent performance in front of the home fans That can happen at the old ballyard by the river Lawrence-Dumont still has the notorious short right-field porch a very short right-center power alley and a summer jet stream that Mows balls over the left-field wall to boot But it may have never happened to anyone the way it happened to Kainer The former Aeros right-hander lost seven about as good as a three-doliar tall His recent firing of Yankee Manager Bob Lemon for the second time after that Lem would remain as the New York field boss all season no matter what is Just the tip of the iceberg In recent years he has hired fired rehired and refired Billy Martin as well as Lem and hired fired and rehired Gene Michael The only manger he has fired recently that he hasn't rehired at least once is Dick Howser and Howser is probably too smart to be conned again It is not at all surprising that Lem told Stetabrenner after his most-recent sacking: didn't take to heart what you said" about the If you take anything Stein-bremer says to heart you are going to get heartburn But maybe these guys are not being conned by Stetabrenner Maybe they're laughing at his excesses and taking some of his considerable bankroll as long as they can At last progress! A semi-permanent 322-seat grandstand has been installed ta the home plate area More than 300 more fans can be accommodated on bleachers down the right-field line And an- of his eight starts at Lawrence-Dumont and did not get a decision in one other He admitted during the season that he had lost his confidence and was having touble finding it again And he finished with a 6-14 season record One reason: he led the American Association ta a most dubious category allowing 29 home runs No other pitcher on any team gave up more than 20 Now after being ripped by Wichita at Denver last week Kainer is out of baseball An apology to Arizona State fans everywhere In Tuesday's column I called Arizona State the Everyone knows it is the University of Arizona that la nicknamed Calling Stetabrenner a Jerk at least my doing it is probably a cheap fhot It would be much more difficult for me to can say Ted Bredehoft a Jerk Or any of the local or state sports heroes or villains that we cover on a regular basis Still it is impossible to resist calling Stein-brenner a Jerk It is so true He is Just about the Jerkiest guy around Compared to Stein-bretmer most of the socalled Jerks in the overblown and hot air-filled world of sport are charming generous and humane I mean this guy makes Charlie Finley look good Steinbreimer at least the public New York Yankee-owner Stetabrenner brays and bullies his way through life His promises are Si planned near home plate to bring the semi-capacity of this semi-stadium to almost 1000 There's also a new semi-official-looking pressbox This ain't much but taken together it's a lot better than nothing It's a semi-start 4 A.
