The Midshipmen held the Falcons' potent Wishbone attack to their lowest point total of the year, but the offense managed only a third-quarter touchdown on a 15-yard pass from quarterback Bill Byrne to tight end John Snif-fen. Air Force did not get a first down in the first quarter and was mired deep in its end of the field early in the" second period when Weiss connected on a 60-yard toss to wide receiver Ken Carpenter. Two plays later, fullback Johnny Smith raced untouched into the end zone from the 3-yard line.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) Chuck Long passed for one touchdown and: Ronnie Harmon ran for another, leading top-ranked Iowa to a 23-13 victory over Wisconsin in a Big Ten Conference football game Saturday. It was the fifth victory this season for the undefeated Hawkeyes and gave them a 2-0 conference record. The Badgers fell to 3-2 overall and 0-2 in Big Ten play. The game looked like an easy Iowa victory until Wisconsin Coach Dave McClain yanked starting quarterback Mike Howard and substituted Bod Keyes for the second half.

Keyes, aided by some offensive errors by the Hawkeyes, twice led Wisconsin to within three points of Iowa in the third quarter. But a 12-yard touchdown run by Harmon and a 35-yard field goal by Robb Houghtlln in the fourth quarter put the Hawkeyes safely ahead. The Badgers trailed 10-0 at the half, then scored on a 3-yard pass from Keyes to fullback Joe Armentrout. Iowa came back with a 40-yard Houghtlln field goal for a 13-7 leadT Todd Gregoire kicked a 27-yard field goal with one second left in the third quarter, putting the Badgers within 13-10. (AP) Michigan quarterback Jim Harbaugh threw a touchdown pass anddefensive back Ed Hood scored after a blocked punt within the first 4:01 of the game as the No. 3 Wolverines beat rival Michigan State 31-0 Saturday in college football. The victory left the Wolverines unbeaten at 5-0 for the season and 2- 0 in the Big Ten Conference, while the Spartans slipped to 2-3 and 0-2. Michigan State was forced into four turnovers, ail of which were resulted in scores by the Wolverines.

The Spartans' defense forced Michigan to give up the ball three times. Michigan State quarterback Bobby McAllister tumbled the snap on the second play of the fame and Michigan recovered, hree plays later, Harbaugh flipped a 9-yard TD pass to tight end Eric Kattus. The Spartans were forced to punt on their next possession and Michigan's Dieter Heren blocked it. Heren scooped up the ball and ran to the 1, where he fumbled into the end zone and Hood fell on the ball for another Michigan touchdown. Penn State 19 Alabama 17 STATE COLLEGE, Pa.

(AP) Massimo Manca's four field goals triggered Penn State's Nittany Lions to a 19-17 victory over the Alabama Crimson Tide Saturday in a defensive struggle of the Top Ten teams. Manca kicked field goals of 38, 44, 50 and 20 yards to give unbeaten No. 8 Penn State its fifth win of the season. He failed on two attempts. Tenth-rated Alabama, losing its first game after four victories, held the lead just once, in the first period on a 19-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Mike Shula to flanker Al Bell.

Penn State held in cheek an Alabama offense that had scored 85 points in its last two games to just a field goal in the final three periods, took the lead for good 2: 33 into the third period on a 50-yard field goal by Manca. Gardner-Webb 38 Lenoir Rhyne 8 BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. (AP) Al Bianco passed for two third-quarter touchdowns and Jimbo Early added a 3-yard scoring run in the period to lead Gardner-Webb to a 38-8 SAC-8 football victory over Lenoir Rhyne Saturday. Mark Greene's 36-yard field goal with 8:36 left in the first period staked Gardner-Webb to a 3- 0 lead that stood up through halftime. The Bulldogs broke away in a Tulsa, Okla. who was making only his eighth carry of the season, took aperfect pitch from quarterback Troy Aikman and sped untouched for the score that settled the defense-dominated 80th meeting of these two old Red River rivals.

Oklahoma now is 3-0 for the season, while Texas dropped to 3-1. Texas leads the all-time series 47-29-4. The Sooners' No. 1-ranked defense allowed Texas only four first downs, none in the second half. The deepest the Texas offense got on its own momentum was the Sooners' 49.

The seven-point underdog Long-horns shocked the Sooners late in the first quarter when senior defensive end Kip Cooper caught a fumble in the air and staggered seven yards for a touchdown. Thomas Aldridge applied the tackle that forced the Sooners Lydell Carr to fumble. It didn't take long for the Sooners to tie the score 7-7, smashing 80 yards in nine plays in the second period, with Can-charging across from the 1. Mays' scoring run with 6:36 re bombard seven-minute stretch of the third quarter to push to a 24-0 advantage. Bianco passed 26 yards to Kelvin Richardson with 9:30 re maining, and Greene added the extra point, the first of five. Bianco then hit Early from 18 yards out with 6:55 left. Early finished the Gardner-Webb spurt with a 3-yard run with 2:22 left. Defensive back Eric Brewton returned a punt 78 yards for a touchdown and a 31-0 Gardner-Webb edge.

Brewton leads the team in scoring with four touchdowns, three on interception returns. Lenoir Rhyne took the ensuing kick off and avoided the shutout when Terrence Steward took a 6-yard touchdown pass from Bryan Bryson with 11:13 left to play. Steward caught a two-point conversion pass from Bryson. Tony Campbell's 1-yard run with 6:39 left closed out the Gardner-Webb scoring; and helped the Bulldogs raise then- record to 4-1, 1- 1 in the SAC-8. Lenoir Rhyne is 2- 4 and 1-2.

Brigham Young 28 San Diego St. PROVO, Utah (AP) Robbie Bosco threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third as llth-ranked Brigham Young rolled over San Diego State 28-0 in a Western Athletic Conference college football game Saturday. Bosco thrilled a homecoming crowd of 65,407 by throwing scoring passes of 13 and 20 yards and completed 25 of 37 passes for 257 yards as the Cougars boosted their season record to 5-1, 2-0 in the WAC. In suffering its second loss in five games, San Diego State was unable to sustain a fruitful drive and wound up punting eight times, and in the Aztecs' deepest penetration made it to the Cougar 1-yard line in the final period before BYU took over on downs. Bosco's first touchdown pass, 13 yards to tight end Trevor Molini, came on BYU's first series and capped an 80-yard drive in which the Cougars uncharacteristically rushed the football eight straight times.

Following a 27 yard punt return by Vai Sikahema, Bosco made it 14- on a 1-yard run late in the first period. That score stood until late the third period when BYU running back Tom "Tuipulotu skirted right end and ran 45 yards for the Cougars' third score. 0 GREENSBORO (AP) Quarterback Alan Hooker passed for four touchdowns two to Jesse Britt as North Carolina pounded Fayetteville State 35-0 in college football Saturday. The Aggies, 3-4, jumped out to a 21-0 halftime lead and never looked back as the Broncos dropped to 1-3-1. State 31-0 point kicks and the Indians led 7-0 with 0:49 left in the first quarter. After Carson Newman, 2-3 overall and 1-2 in the conference, was stopped on four downs, Newberry scored again. Pete Bember's 1-yard-run completed a 10-play, 46-yard drive, giving the Indians a 13-0 lead with 3:15 left in the first period.

The lone Eagle score came with 13:11 left in the first half. Carson-Newman drove from its own 20 to the Indian 18-yard-Iine but settled for a 35-yard field goal by Louis Revets. r- i The team's traded possessions before Newberry scored again. Nesbitt's 1-yard plunge climaxed an 8-play, 51-yard drive with 2:13 left in the first half. Newberry led 20-3 in the first half.

The third quarter opened with a 9-play, 80-yard drive, highlighted by 33 and 36 yard passes from Newberry quarterback Jimmy Skipper to flanker Darryl Owings. Taylor's 28-yard field goal gave Newberry a 23-3 lead at the 8:43 mark. An interception by Indian cor-nerback Jamie Broadhurst at the Carson-Newman 26 set up another Taylor field goal. (AP) Freshman tailback Stevie Riggins rushed for 168 yards and three touchdowns including the go-ahead score to lead Presbyterian to 38-20 South Atlantic Conference football victory over Catawba on Saturday. Riggins scored two of his touchdowns in the fourth quarter in a 21-point outburst that put the game away. Catawba, 2-3 overall and 0-3 in the conference, led 17-10 at the half, but Riggins burst 65 yards up the middle with 5:38 left in the third quarter to tie it at 17-17. Following a 21-yard field goal by Catawba's Randy Brown early in the fourth quarter, Riggins scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 14-yard run, capping a 10-play, 55-yard drive with 6:29 left.

Moments later following an ih-tereception by Kevin Wade, Riggins went over from the 8 with 5: II left. Wade intercepted a Brian Watts pass and returned it 40 yards, enabling Riggins to score on the next play. (AP) Quarterback Joe Pizzo connected with Dale Similton on two touchdown passes and ran for two more scores to lead Mars Hill to a 28-7 college football victory over Wofford on Saturday. Wofford, 2-4, jumped out to a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter when Steve Mabrey caught a 64-yard scoring pass from Chuck Fraser. The Lions, 4-1 and ranked No.

15 in NAJA Division then tied the score on the next series when Similton raced 49 yards with a Pizzo screen pass for a touchdown. David Shealy added the extra point. Jackson put Auburn ahead 7-0 with his 53-yard burst less than two minutes into the game, then gave the Tigers a 31-17 advantage in the third quarter with his 35-yard TD dash. Florida State quarterback Eric Thomas rallied the Seminoles with a fourth down, 48-yard pass to Hassan Jones, setting up a score that closed the gap to 31-24 late in the third quarter.
