TARIFF BLAMED FOR DEPRESSION Former Virginia Governor Speaks With Kunip at Bluefiekl BLUEFIELD, Nov. 2 Byrd, former covernor of the neighbor state Virginia, came to this border city last night io tell an audience that the Republican oarly through its tariff policy ol the last 10 years had erected an economic structure "which has finally crashed down upon the heads of the American pco-! pie." Byrd appeared at a Democratic rally here with H. G. Kump, Democratic nominee for governor, who talked on increased state expenses and asked for a "bouse cleaning" in Charleston. Beginning with the Forciney-Mc- Cumber act.

Byrd said, "and climaxing the tariff orgy with the Hawlcy- Sraoot. or Crundy tariff, ot 1930, the Republican tariff policy has been the greatest tingle factor on bringing about the tragic economic conditions which this country has experienced in the last three years." The American "svho suffered most." took the severest blow former governor of the old domimo "In 1928," ho said, "Mr. Hoover said that the a i was the salvation of. the farmer. Yet.

despite the highest tariff duties in the history of the nation, the prices oC farm products are almost at the lowest ebb in country's history. And yet, Mr. Hoover in his address in Iowa a few days ago had the temerity to say that we need additional tariffs to help the farmer out of his plight." sweeping victory lor the entire Republican itcket in West Virginia predicted by Charles J. Schuck, "Wheeling, chairman of the party'd state executive committee, in a statement issued from headquarters here today. Declaring that there never had been any doubt about "the triumphant election ot Tom as governor," the state chairman asserted that the overwhelming sweep of sentiment to President Hoover in month had assured West Virginia's eight electoral votes for the reelection of the President. "West Virginia's eighi electoral votes will be cast for the reelection oC Herbert Hoover," Mr. Shuck said.

That is now assured. The tremendous i sweep of sentiment to the President been unparalleled in the political history of the slate. Mr. visits to West. Virginia have Republicans to a high pitch OL enthusiasm, and they are supported by thousands of Democrats, who place? patriotism above politics and who.

realizing that the continuance of the present national administration is vital to the economic stability the nation, will go to the polls next Tuesday and cast their ballots for Hoover and Curtis." i madu at the rat.
