Refuge Report Fishing rods were jumping Stockton club offers public pheasant hunts After taking pictures Seng released the fish into the lake sans fishing rod The next night Seng and his friends Ben Teraishi of Monterey Park and Hai Le of Westminster went back to Irvine and fished the same spot in the middle of the lake It was 8:30 when Le baited his hook with the head of a mackerel and threw it out When he got a bite he set the hook and held on with both hands The fish made three runs before Ben netted it head first After exchanging high-fives the group headed to the boat dock to weigh the fish The dock stable however so the scale read between 59 to 62 pounds Lee was going to take a picture and throw the fish back said no Le your fish is over a state Indeed it was The certified scale at the tackle shop read 618 pounds breaking the old record of 594 (also at Irvine) Fish and Game officials verified the mark and that it was a blue catfish a nice record to be sure but catch will be fishing rods are really jumping at Irvine Lake these days Power bait isn't recommended however Luck is the best bet what Bon Seng of Anaheim used Oct 21 when he caught the fishing rod he lost overboard only minutes before and there was a 588-pound catfish on the end of it At about 8:30 pm Seng was munching on fried chicken when he noticed a nibble at the end of his rod which was leaning against the side of the boat Seng who lost his right hand in a grenade blast in Vietnam picked up the rod with his left hand and set the hook fish went charging on me and just took Seng said was nothing I could do to keep the fishing pole from coming out of my hand" Seng 38 expect the fish to be as big as it was and the chicken grease on his hand didn't help either So over the side of the boat the rod went Two minutes later Seng got a bite on his other rod He set the hook and started reeling At the end of his line was his first rod Haring landed the rod Seng noticed the catfish was still on the line so he fought the monster fish for some 40 minutes before boating the 588-pounder FLY FISHERMEN The Stanislaus Fly Fishermen will hold their annual dinnerauction Nov 10 in the McHenry
