How They Scored 58-0 loss to West Texas State But McJunkins a Muskogee product playing in front of family and friends in his home state responded to the challenge by paasing for 107 yards and one touchdown against the touted Tulsa pass defense best in the Missouri Valley Conference McJunkins also was the Shockers' leading rusher with 82 net yards (after minus 20 in sacks) and a pair of touchdowns it meant something extra playing down here in front of people I know" said McJunkins surrounded by well-wishers after the near-upset "As far as not fumbling today I think I played the same as usual If fumbles are going to come going to come" (See TULSA 8G Col 2) By RUSS CORBITT Staff Writer TULSA Oh for couple mm yards here or there or a few more seconds Wichita State's Shockers rebounding from their worst performance of the season with perhaps their best pushed a highly-favored and more talented Tulsa team all over the field the second half Saturday afternoon at Shelly Stadium But in the end it was the old little too story The Hurricane which had Jumped trff to a 21-0 lead and was on top 28-10 at halftime held on for a 28-26 victory to level its record at 5-5 The Shockers saw a 305-yard offensive day go down the drain and fell to 1-8 The play to be remembered by the 17821 in attendance many of them Wichitans will be the two-point conversion attempt that failed after the Shockers had driven 93 yards to score with 4:19 left in the game ran a fake dive and wanted to throw for two points" WSU head coach Jeff Jeffries explained the crucial play which left the score at 28-26 Hobson (split end) was covered but Prince (McJunkins) could have thrown to Mickey Collins if he'd seen It was one of the few mistakes of the day though for the freshman quarterback who played like a man possessed when he got his chance in the second quarter McJunkins one of three quarterbacks used by WSU was benched in favor of southpaw Mike Boccella to open the game It was the as stunning as a Roscoe Tanner serve As powerful as the Green Bay sweep As captivating and productive as a Willie Stargell grand slam It also was politically safe Gov Jatai Carlin who was among the 51150 persons in Memorial Stadium Saturday afternoon to see Kansas hold off Kansas State 36-28 knew he could say something nice about each offense MANY total yards did both teams Carlin asked after he had congratulated the Jayhawks who were winning their 53rd game in this 78-game series it have I been dose to a Close but last season Nebraska and KU combined for 1131 yards the Huskers getting 799 But while this explosion may not have been a record it made for a considerably more interesting game than last season's 63-21 Nebraska rout of the Jayhawks K-State and KU averaged 68 yards each time they snapped the ball 306 of K-State's 480 yards coming by the pass and 286 of XU'S 449 yards coming by the run WAS no loser out there this afternoon" said KU coach Don Fambrough game was a tremendous compliment to the state of Kansas looked like it was going to boil down to whoever had the ball This was more than rhetoric from a gracious winning coach This was a poor Nebraska-Oklahoma Game of the Century Suddenly it was 1971 again but the place (See KANSAS 6G Col 1) Sydney (24) escapes James Has His KUs Harry Hubach By RICK PLUMLEE Staff Writer Moment Against tried not to let that miss enter my said Hubach I keep it But that miss was looking awfully Mg too Mg It was the one-print difference really I was more nervous on the sideline than on the said the senior from Cleveland was relieved to get out there away from all that helmet banging and uh encouraging (SeeKirS6GCoLS) met and banging me around They were saying 'Well it's up to you' was really starting to bug me making me a little mad They were trying to relieve the pressure but really they were adding to Certainty Hubach didn't need any more pressure After all he had missed an extrapoint kick on first touchdown He had made 50 straight extra prints a school record Not since way back in his freshman days had he missed one of those So you can imagine how Hubach felt Satur- -day when he knew his moment was coming A big moment A game-winning moment In his four years at KU Hubach has never kicked a game-winning field goal But there it was staring him in the face It waa late in the fourth quarter and Kansas trailing Kansas State 28-27 was starting to bog down on a drive that time" said Hubach started caning up and dapping me on the hel LAWRENCE Kickers are a lonely breed It works better that way "A kicker's moment in a game comes in brief bursts a few seconds of action at a time" said Mike Hubach the Kansas kicker a game I try to Mock everything else out so I can concentrate and be ready when my moment Kevin Is Coming Back Brain Damage Felled Prep Gridder 7 want to go back to school and I want to play football9 wmmti Staff Photo by Avery John By BOB LUTZ Staff Writer Just add Kevin name to that list of names filed under Weese a sophomore tight end for Great Bend High School collapsed during a pre-season practice session He had suffered brain damage started to lose the ability to move his arms or said Great Bend coach Pat Wozniak we had an ambulance on the field in three to four Weese lost consciousness and had to be flown by helicopter to Wesley Medical Center For weeks there was no improvement Then the 15-year-old began to show slight improvement and it continued On Friday Weese was able to greet the entire Great Bold football team at Wesley then attended the Panthers' game against Wichita Northwest at Carroll Field which Northwest won 14-7 were times when we wouldn't have been sup prised to have lost him" said neurologist Dr Paul Stein dealing with neurological problems I've seen lots of others get well But we came very dose to losing Kevin more than once" What caused Weese's injury still is a mystery never found an aneurism" said Dr Stein had a sub-arachnaid hemorrhage bleeding into the spinal fluid spaces that surround the brain not rare Probably about 50 percent who have it survive and many of them go on to lead normal lives But of that 50 percent who survive there are not many as sick as Kevin was" Weese's weight dropped to a low of 122 pounds He suffered memory loss and the ability to use his arms and legs But he can talk and was thrilled to be able to attend Friday football game day he left us in the helicopter there weren't many of us who felt he had much of a chance" said Great Bend athletic director Dick Towers in the last three weeks he's made a remarkable turnaround If ever there was such a tiling as answered prayers this was Weese's mother Helen has stayed in Wichita during the ordeal For the first three weeks she stayed at Wesley but since has moved into a motel there was no hope at all at said Mrs Weese were lots of times when I became discouraged I'm sure Kevin even surprised his doctors" Weese collapsed about 20 minutes into a late-August practice session into the arms of teammate and close friend Larry Ruble another sophomore (See MIRACLE 13GCri 1) i GREAT BEND COACH PAT WOZNIAK GIVES BALL TO KEVIN WEESE The football was autographed
