gin rummy In the former game Norma Rubens won high score for the ladies and Morgan and Mabel McHugh low Amos Johnson won high score for the gentlemen There was no prise for low score of gentlemen Scores in gin rummy were held by Mary McDonald high Harryette Howell and Alma Forrester second Charlotte Hagood received console-' tlon Members of the drill team had charge of the games and furnished the prises Refreshments were served by the committee in charge Thedridge of San Lu'isffey LYNN MRI'jUBTnff-FnsLdmr Tule Lake Son Dies In Action A family In the Tule Lake center has been notified by the War Department that their Japanese-1 American son was killed in action in Italy the War Relocation Authority i announced Saturday The soldier was I Technical Sergeant Zentaro Aklyama 24 son of Mr and Mrs Yukutaro Ak-1 lyama The family operated a truck farm near Sacramento before evacuation The WRA said this was believed to be the first death of a Japanese American soldier whose parents are living at the Tule Lake center Sergeant Aklyama trained with the Japanese American 442nd combat team at Camp Selby Miss Many nisei are now fighting in Italy with the combat team and also with the 100th Infantry Battalion made up largely of Japanese Americans from Hawaii and the mainland The bat-1 talion has been cited for outstanding gallantry and heroism In addition to his parents he is survived by five brothers and two sisters in the Tule Lake center Mr and Mrs Charles Woodall and son and daughter of Oakland who have been guests for the past two weeks at the home of Mr and Mrs Bill Applegate returned to their homo Sunday Fred Berg Home After Serving In Air Over Europe (By CapL Humphreys) Technical Sergeant Fred Berg came home this week from a tour of duty In the European theatre and I think all his many friends in southern Siskiyou may well be proud of his record In 13 months of combat flying as a top turret gunner in heavy bombers Sgt Berg has won the distinguished Flying Cross the Air Medal with three oak leaf dusters which signifies four separate awards of the air medal and the Purple Heart And thereby hangs a tale Shortly after Pearl Harbor Sgt Berg then employed as a brakeman the Southern Pacific company here attempted to enlist in the Army and was rejected because some of his teeth were artificial Entering the service later via selective service Fred did a fine job of showing all concerned that he was far from unfit for military service No doubt the Axis would have been better pleased had Sgt Berg remained in civilian life Sgt Berg will report to a left Wednesday for Oakland to visit at the home of her mother Mrs Fred Smith of Redding was here from Wednesday to Saturday as a guest in the William Welsh home Mrs Gene Pappini returned Thursday after a two weeks visit with relatives in San Francisco and Gilroy Mrs Solus of Yreka accompsnied by Mrs A Brasil was here Tuesday visiting friends Miss Mary Girimonte left Sunday for San Francisco to here this week visiting his wife and children Miss Peggy Merrill of 8an Francisco is spending her vacation in Dunsmuir as the guest of Dr and Mrs Cornish Miss Emmy Lou Tullison of Vallejo is vlaiting at the home of her uncle and aunt Mr and Mrs Morrell Mrs James Pereira and son Michael are spending the week in Klamath Falls with Mr and Mrs Lawrence Roman Mrs Timothy Murphy was in Klamath Falls over the week-end visiting with relatives and friends Mr and Mrs Roy Hogan of Oakland and Mr and Mrs Joe Smith of San Francisco who have been guests for the past two weeks of Mr and Mrs Francis Connelly returned to their homes Monday Mr and Mrs Lowell Bosburg of Sacramento are vacationing at Shasta Retreat Mrs Bosburg is a sister of Mrs Lawrence DuBose Mr and Mrs Bert Hall are spending the
