following his talk with Inspector IL Hudson Also indicating interest was Lyndon Far-well who has not decided whether or not to submit a bid based on Monte Bello Way (Front street) At press time no definite action on federal requests for bids on a new post office here has been taken but Johnson owner of the new Little Village development has submitted his property as a possible site pending acceptance by the Post Office Nestled in the Beautiful Wooded Western Foothills Overlooking the Famous Santa Clara Valley in the Heart of California VOLUME XI LOS GATOS CALIFORNIA FRIDAY MARCH 14 1947 NUMBER 25 Twelve Pages fin III ZJ Tentative Los Gatos Highway Relocation Termed Best Solution Gymkhana Announces Program Of Events For First Two-Day Show To Be Held Here June 7 And 8 Show Committeemen of the Los Gatos Gymkhana Associ ation this week announced preliminary plans for the coming rodeo and gymkhana to be held here Saturday and Sunday June 7 and 8 Included in the listings decided upon by the show committee are five major arena events and eight track attractions At the same time it was revealed that renovation of the local rodeo grounds would be initiated with construction of Field Surveys Hot Yet Made But Division Of Highways Says Creek Line Considered Best Direction The State Division of Highways at Sacramento this week consented to a request from the Los Gatos Times and revealed the proposed route for relocating the present highway through Los Gatos The tentative proposed route was drawn on the map (shown in an adjoining colmn) in the offices of the Division of Highways at Sacramento at the personal direction of McCoy state highway engineer -who declared that while "actual Senators Balk At Appropriation On Hoad Relocation Of Asks City Manager Study Be Made By Council fence before the grandstand marked as the number one improvement This will enable officials to stage both track and arena events at the same time thus materially speeding up the show Innovations For the first time in the history of the organization the yearly western event will be thrown open to all entrants insuring appearance of top-flight riders in the rodeo circuit in addition to contestants from this area It is also planned to initiate two new events bronc riding minus the opportunity to grab for leather no and steer decorating In addition to these two thrillers it is also planned to have steer riding single and team steer roping and a quadrangle stake race in the arena Traek Events Included in the present schedule of track events are a pony express race novice and senior hacamore competition trail horse contest stock horse judging and a stake race Added feature will be a boots and saddle race wherein tC-shUUy of the horseman to handle hU equipment will be a deciding factor with speed and sureness of movements Members of the Collier Committee on highways Thursday morning indicated they wanted borings made a bond issue passed and plans completed for a water conservation dam at Windy Point by the water conservation district before the state should consider moving the present highway at an estimated cost of $2-475000 Present at the meeting in Sacramento were representatives of the Los Gatos Citizens Executive Committee water district counsel Herbert Jones and a group of local residents Stanley Mills was spokesman for the Los Gatos people Letters Jones reading letters purporting to show the state- was stunned about the contemplated dam before the highway was built brought Senator Ray Juda (R) Santa Cruz to his feet with a letter from Col John Skeggs indicating the district had no money or plans lor a dam when the highway was put in Senator Randolph Collier (R) head of the committee suggested the water district Mput its house Being brought up after a lapse of nearly seven years the matter of having a city manager form of government for Los Gatos was broached when the Board of Directors of toe Los Gatos Chamber of Commerce recommended Monday that such a move be studied It was in 1940 that a similar move was inaugurated but lack of public support and a willingness of town officials to carry toe work load resulted in turning down of toe proposal Harold Lord president of toe Chamber of Commerce pointed out that increasing growth of toe community and importance of civic affairs is multiplying the work of Town Councilmen to a point where they frequently are forced to devote considerable time to town affairs The resolution recommending that a study be made by toe Council of such a form of government will be presented to that body at their next meeting Also brought up at the Monday noon meeting was the problem of street name signs and possibility of installing benches around town -Sewall Brown will head a committee to give toe two matters further consideration field surveys have not been made at this location from reconnaissance surveys it is believed that the route offers the best solution for a relocation of the existing highway through the Town of Los Gatos" While time did not permit ob-taning further details on the tentative relocation as outlined it is presumed that the route is that project specified in the highway construction budget calling for "17 miles 6 lanes through Los Gatos $1096000 and 07 miles 4 lanes divided through Los Gatos $158000" As outlined the highway from Santa Cruz would depart from the existing highway just south of the southerly limits cross Los Gatos Creek and follow the east side crossing Main street under the bridge and forming a triangle at approximately the gymkhana field where it would branch west into Saratoga avenue and east into San Jose avenue making the latter junction near Roberts Road While this has been the most generally supposed route the relocated highway would take and while Mr McCoy believes it offers the best solution it must be remembered that he also emphasized that it is termed as tentative since surveys have not reached beyond the "reconnaissance" stage Actual relocation of the highway is not likely to be undertaken for two or three years though it might be sooner now that it has been decided that building the highway through Los Gatos is not dependent upon whether or not toe proposed dam at Windy Point ever materializes Until recently toe question of toe dam did affect the relocation of toe highway through Los Gatos but about a month ago toe Division of Highways announced that toe highway outside of town would be changed to go around toe dam and return to toe present existing highway south of toe point where it will now depart on its relocated route through toe town (A large map showing toe relocated highway crossing three arms of toe reservoir and skirting toe proposed dam was published in The Times on February 14) in order and then come and see us!" Sessions were adjourned until 8 pm next Monday night when the committee will hold further discussion on the subject EDITORIAL RAINFALL Jots and Dots in Little Spots Rainfall toatl to March 14 in Los Gatos was 1711 inches as against 2320 inches in 1946 at Madera Colorado resrevoir total was 1520 compared with 2391 inches a year ago and at Howell reservoir total is 2127 inches while in 1946 same date toe amount was 3243 inches The above map is the first that has been made public by the Division of Highways relative to the relocation of the highway through Los Gatos It is emphasized that it is the route preferred by the department as offering the best solution to the relocation though this does not necessarily mean that this route as shown will be the final selection in all details It is our opinion that when actual field surveys are made it may be found necessary to deviate slightly here and there from this proposal For instance if the highway runs up Saratoga avenue the same bottleneck that exists now at Santa Cruz and Saratoga avenues will still exist There is some speculation here that the route might continue further down the creek before the branch is made There are other local also including one that the highway should follow the present railroad right-of-way through town moving the depot north of Saratoga avenue That would eliminate crossing the tracks with the highway which would be necessary under the proposed route shown on the map above Atany rate all we know is this: The state highway department has gone on recof-d for the first time showing what route it considers as offering the best solution to the relocation problem Town COUNCIL BOTES Wm Weingartner Passes March 7th Maude Cardoza Is Called By Death Choice Ball Movies To Be Shown Here At High additional patrolmen as soon as possible to take this function under the direction of toe police department Councilman Wright said one of four methods of increasing town revenue could be adopted: sales tax increasing property assessments increasing business licenses materially or by popular vote allocate 15 cents in addi- tional taxes to parks playgrounds etc Parking meter fees are to apply on permanently Town citizens at toe meeting anticipated toe meters will create "a lot of dissatisfied people" declaring toe machines were not accumulative in registering time Statements were made that in some other cities "toe public is being cheated" because oftimes the meters only register 12 minutes or varying amounts instead of toe 60 minutes 5 cents supposed to buy Mayor Jack Adam hoped this
