6C 1HE WICHITA EAGLE AND BEACON Sundoy January 20 1980 V- a Haunting Chilling Tale Low-key British Film a Cut Above Similar Recent Fare bit uneasy by the direct and mischievous (perhaps even evil) look in the little girl's eyes IS SHE TOO young to understand the tragedy around her? Is that why she seems amused? Or does she fully understand and still display amusement? That is the horrifying quandary A third child dies in another accident ieaying only me of the originals and the distraught father wonders what he can do Bonnie seems to be eliminating her sibling one by one But how? And why? Directorproducer Gabrielle Beaumont gives a surprising twist to the tale that is more natural than unnatu ral It is admittedly a long stretch of logic taken from the novel by Bernard Taylor Yet it is an intriguing "what-if?" view The British cast (Malcolm Stoddard as the father Cyd Hayman as the mother and Angela Pleasence as the pregant woman) although unknown in this country are uniformly good There are too many weak moments and non sequiturs in the screenplay by CHaf Pooley that rupture the pace but there are some nice moments of soft cinematography by Norman Warwick to make up for it Not a great film but a cut above similar recent fare It's low-key and sneaky rather than extravagant and graphic "The Godsend" (R) fr at Cinemas East and Cinemas West By BOB Staff Writer Godsend" is a British thriller that will remind many people of demon child epic Omen" of several years ago It is a chilling tale but it points out the essential cultural difference of the genre between here and there The British are understated and cerebral while we tend to jump and scream They prefer the horror of the imagination We like blood and guts For that reason the rating may seem a bit misleading It cohtains several offscreen deaths and the view of an adult attempting to murder a child For American audiences however that's pretty tame PG-type stuff Nevertheless "The Godsend" is an often gripping film that stays within the bounds of credibility It is a haunting tale of possible madness with the occult Yet all its occurences can be explained logically in retrospect That's what makes this minor film a thought-provoking exercise ARE THE happenings merely a tragic set of coincidences or is there THE BOB CURTRIGHT FILM CRITIC FOR THE WICHITA EAGLE-BEACON SELECTS "GOING IN STYLE" AS ONE OF THE 10 BEST PICTURES OF THE YEARI "DAD'S oi DIXIE LAND Are Still Swinging From "THE RAFTERS" Every Wednesday 6:30 pjn to 9:00 pjn some evil master plan behind them?
