PAGE TWO CHARLESTON DAILY MAIL, SUNDAY MORNING, JANUARY 20, 1935 1 .4 I Continual Blooming Garden Outlined Ly Mrs. Schwartz How to Plan It in January and February Suggested at Meeting of Mound Club; How to Increase General Effect Planning a continuously blooming garden may be a pleasant occupation for cold January and February days. Before a seed is ordered, or a trench dug, the gardener, with the aid of pencil and paper, can visualize a garden full of flowers in each rhonth. How to have' blooms in every part of your garden during every month from May through September was illustrated in diagrams by Mrs. Osman Swartz at a recent meeting of the Mound Garden club at the home of Mr.

and Mrs. R. H. 'Arthur in street, South Charleston. Mrs.

Swartz, a former president off the club, has attended the School of Selection of flowers. Mrs. Swartz Bald, should be made only after the application of several tegts to the qualifications of each variety. The qualifications to be consid- are: First, the time of bloom; second, color; third, height; fourth, type of foliage, and fifth, type of bloom. "To have a beautiful border," she said, "there must be bloom in it at all seasons--at least from May through September.

There must be a definite coolr scheme so that the flowers will harmonize together. "So that none of the flowers will be hidden and that the border may have interest, the flowers should be of different heights, the lower ones at the front of-the border and the high ones at the back. "The general effect of the border is- greatly heightened if the foliage of the various plants differ in texture. being coarse, and some fine. It is very important, too, that plants be selected which keep good foliage during the entire garden season.

Brown patches of dead foliage look much than no bloom." Emphasizing the importance of in types of bloom to be included In the garden, "Mrs. Swartz advised use of heads of bloom, spikes of bloom fillers. If a chart is made, including the 'live qualifications of each prospective flower, Mrs. Swartz said, it is easy for the gardener to determine whether there will be a clash of color, too many flowers blooming in one month and a scarcity in another month, or whether the foliage, bloom and height of the plants will vary to give a pleasant effect. It is particularly important when planning the color scheme of your garden, Mrs.

Swartz said, to do so with the color of your house in mind. White and delicate shades should predominate in a garden which surrounds a red brick house, she said, while shades of yellow, orange and some reds may be included in the garden near a yellow or cream brick house. If your house is white, however, you can choose as riotous colors as their harmony with each other will permit. Suggesting books which are to be found in the public library on the subjects of continuous bloom and color schemes, Mrs. Swartz named Gertrude Jekyll's "Color Schemes for the Flower Garden," as the best.
