miles northeast of Yreka The Hessig ranch had Its start with the purchase of 160 acres from Albert Rush on July 29 1884 Hessig kept buylig land from small homesteaders until 2500 acres were accumulated Cattle was the main enterprise even though the ranch was self sufficient and quite diver-silled They had peach pear and apple orchards and raised hogs and sold the side meat Produce was traded for grain with Butte Valley formers In 1888 a slaughter house was built and beef sold to the nearby logging camps and railroad crews Things dull in those days either as shown by the three the ranch A postoffice by this name operated on foe ranch until about 1940 therefore the name was synonymous with the Hessig Ruck Elma the mother of Lou was bora on the Peach Orchard Ranch along Mo Sett Creek in Scott Valley Her parents were Louisa and Lorlng Vamum Louis Versell Hessig (our Lou) was bora a year later on Aug 8 1908 at foe home of his uncle Mr and Mrs Rule Var-num at Neck In Butte begins with Jacob Hessig great grandfather of Lou who was born In Switzerland and migrated to the US His son Louis Versell Hessig was born In Galesburg Mich He croswed the plains by covered wagon with his mother Rose Francis (remarried when he was about 20 years old The family settled at Hydes-ville CaHf In Humboldt Coun-to south of Eureka The first Hessig ran a pack train from Hydes ville to Redding as well as owning a store In Hydesville He married Charlotte Hansen who was horn In Den- worker come easy Lou worked hard for long hours on the ranch There were 13 miles of hand dug ditches which were also cleaned by hand In 1945 qp to 100 dairy cows were all milked by hand In spite of this he was never too busy to stop and help a neighbor In 1942 Lon took over the ranch operation by guiding hand for Lou and has achieved many honors In her own right She has been president of foe Siskiyou Cowbelles president of the county fair board president of the Shasta Valley Community Cli and also of foe Yreka Trail Riders The have two daughters Shirley Is married to Km neth Elwood of Bella Vista In in 1959 to Joe LaJbacher During this time Lou Hessig built the ranch up to 500 Hereford cows They acquired the adjoining Klamath Hot Springs property in 1954 so that they now have 4500 acres of deeded land leased 3000 additional acres plus Forest Service and Public Do main permits The Hot Springs was a famous health resort operated by Lite and Joe Edson at foe turn of the century The huge hotel of 75 rooms burned In 1915 Natural hot water baths fishing hunting and scenery attracted many notables and hundreds of guests from all over the Ovar 350 acres of meadows bordered foe shore of the Klamath River and were cut for hay and grazed by foe cattle In foe tall Tie setting is most
