He was 76 Owens was an original owner and vice president of the Sounds who also served as the general manager. He remained heavily involved in baseball throughout his life and was serving on the advisory board for Music City Baseball, a group trying to bring a major league team to town. Owens grew up playing sandlot base- ball around town before becoming a standout at Cohn High where he made The Tennessean All-City Team as a senior out- in 1963. He went on to play at Lipscomb and was mem- ber of the team to qualify for the NAIA Regional Tourna- ment in 1966.

After graduation Owens managed and played in several local amateur leagues. In 1976 when Larry Schmittou, also a Cohn graduate, was putting together the Nashville Sounds he announced that Owens, the baseball coach at Pearl High at the time, was among 15 original shareholders. The group also included country music stars Jerry Reed and Conway Twitty. Richard Sterban of the Oak Ridge Boys joined the ownership group the following year. Schmittou named Owens vice presi- dent and general manager when the Sounds started playing at newly-built Greer Stadium in 1978.

Owens also assisted Schmittou in bringing the Nashville South Stars mi- nor league hockey team to town. The South Stars played at Municipal Audito- rium. On Jan. 1, 1983, Owens stepped down as vice president and general manager of the Sounds to accept a position with Purity Dairies. He remained a part-own- er of the Sounds.
