Both teams played on even terms the first half but the Pirates had a golden opportunity just as time ran out at intermission. Sullivan had a first down at the Panthers one yard line but time elasped before the BUCK could get organized, and the half ended without a score.

The Panthers received to open the third stanza, and on the third play from scrimmage, Danny Scalf picked off a stray Marty Snapp aerial to put Coach Fred Fisher's squad in excellent field position at the Panther's ten yard line.
