MEETING TO BE HELD TO- MORROW NIGHT Alameda has Two Excellent Tracks, but no Cycle Club--The Absence of Such a Club is the Wonderment of All Wheelmen.

Many of Alameda's cycling people of both sexes are contemplating the organization of a road club in this city in the near future. F. S. White, the cycle agent, is about to call a meeting of all the owners of wheels who might have a desire to join such a club. Several attempts in this direction have been made recently, but have fallen through in each instances through lack of business-like organization.

Many visiting wheelmen came to Alameda yesterday for a spin over our smooth streets, and the wonder of all was that Alameda had no cycle club. The local wheelmen have been figuring on the possibilities of maintaining such an organization, should one be started. and the conclusion is almost unanimous that it is a long-felt want, and could easily be made to pay. Argument in favor of the club is also made that besides the streets of Alameda there is the bicycle track at Cycle Park, on one side of the city, and the Speed Track on the other, either of which may be used for racing purposes. Mr.

White was seen this morning, and he stated that the first meeting would be held to-morrow evening at his cyclery, on Central avenue, at which time a temporary Chairman and Secretary will be selected. J. E. Ewald has prepared a resolution, to which the prospective members are appending their signatures. The membership will be limited to about twentyfive or thirty, and at the meeting each name will be balloted upon, one blackball sufficing to reject any member.

The object is to select the best available cyclers in town, so that the club. although small, will rapidly gain a record for itself. The uniform and club name will be decided upon by vote of the club after organization. The "Alameda Road and "Alameda Cyclers" are the two titles already proposed, and one of these will probably be chosen. Judge Tyler's Funeral.

Last Saturday afternoon the funeral services of the late ex-Judge Geo. W. Tyler, took place from the family residence, corner of Everett street and Lincoln avenue. Rev. George Dodson, Pastor of the Unitarian Church, officiated, and the pall bearers were Messrs.

Merrill, Graham, J. M. Painter, T. G. Daniels, R.

Oakley and E. J. Blanding. The remains were interred in Mountain View Cemetery. Cricket Season Opening.

Yesterday, at the West End grounds, the cricket season opened with a surprise for the champion Alamedas, as they were easily defeated by the Pacifics. At Klinknerville the Bohemians took the Californias into camp by a score of 173 to 70. Encinals will Participate. Mayor Davie, of Oakland, Says That G. L. Abell is Incompetent. G. L.

Abell, the Oakland City Numberer, who was also formerly the Alameda City Numberer, is both a useless and an incompetent official, according to the statements that Mayor Davie will make to the City Council to-night; and upon those grounds he will recommend that the office be abolished and the duties assigned to the street department. During the last few days Mr. Davie has delegated an jedividual to inspect Mr. Abell's efforts in behalf of the city, and the result will probably surprise those who believe in the continuance of Mr. Abell in his position.

On the East side of Broadway, between Seventh and Eighth streets, there are but three stores properly numbered. and one establishment is without a numerical designation of any kind. If this is the case in the main business section of the city, Mr. Davie figures that the conditions in residence districts must be sorrowfully askew. Besides, Mr.

Abell is drawing $510 salary a year for doing virtually nothing, as his returns to the city treasury for the same period amount to only $11.50. During his incumbency of six years Mr. Abell has drawn $3,240 out of the exchequer, and Mr. Davie thinks it is time to stop the leak, when the city has other needs for money. When the street signs were put up the city was compelled to employ men to do the work when Mr.

Abell could have consistently done that much towards earning his salary. "I think." said Mayor Davie yesterday, "that it is about time to get rid of fall needless officials. We are not in a position to provide sinecures for any one, as an inspection of onr streets will soon convince anyone. Ii we are to have an economical administration of affairs, upon which we all stand pledged, let us get rid of all these little leaks. Oakland is a pretentious city and all that, but we have no need for front -knob polishers or other official furbelows.

Let 11S first get the city government down to actual necessities and direct our energies to getting the water front in condition. and in fixing up the streets and parks." Well Attended Services. The Easter music in the various churches yesterday attracted unusually large crowds, and at the First M. E. Church on Park street last evening chairs had to be placed in the vestibule to accommodate all.

A VERY DESIRABLE SITE. Now that the building of our City Hall is a foregone conclusion, we would call attention to a most desirable site, in the immediate vicinity of the City Hall property, for a hotel or business block, namely the property on the corner of Central avenue and Oak streets, which we know the owner is disposed to sell at a fair price. Anyone wishing further information concerning this property can obtain it by addressing the Editor of the ENCINAL. VALUE OF PRINTERS' INK. It is now announced that old newspapers are the best possible material for wrapping up clothing, as the printers ink on them is deadly poison to moths and their larve.

This lishes another proof of the value of printers, ink, and atteats the fact that it never gets to be too much of a back number to be noxious to the pesta of a community. We have lots of old papers for sale, at 10 cents per 100. Come and get them, and thus save many dollars by prOtecting vour garments from the of the moths. Easter peals.
