with horses and driven and put on an efficient footing to get to fine Tlie facilities of the Department have also been augmented by the building of a sixty-foot splice ladder tlie purchase of a hoee-patch to stop leaks in hose when in service a water heater to keep tlie water in the boiler of tlie steam fire engine hot wbilo standing in tlie house and tlie location of two additional fire alarm boxes I would respectfully recommend that a hose wagon of sufficient capacity to carry from 1500 to 2000 feet of hose lie procured by tlie city and located west of Grand street Also that a buggy properly equipped bo procured for tlie use of the Chief Engineer It would be of great assistance to him in tlie discharge of his duties and by its use lie could better look after the Mattered sections of tlie Department than can he done at present Also that tim pay of tlie permanent men ho placed at figures more in accordance witli tlie salaries paid to employees in the various other departments of the city The Firo Department employees are expected to lie nervy ami skilfnl in tlio discharge of their duties but tlio pay accorded thorn is not even equal to that of tlie poorest street laborer Also that 1500 feet of new hoee be procured for tlie use of tlie Deportment Also that the houses on Webster Sherman and Cliestput streets be repainted inside end out Also tlie purchase of an additional
