D-B's Buck Van Huss Having Surgery Today By STEVE TAYLOR TiiMf-Mewi Sport Writer They won't be having the basketball banquet at Dobyns- Bennett tonight. Buck Van Huss can't make it. Van Huss, the easy-going Tribe head coach, Monday entered Vanderbilt University Hospital where he will undergo surgery today for blockage in the circulatory system. The Indian mentor had trouble with the same ailment about 10 years ago, but kept "putting it oft and putting it off." Several years back, Van Huss was referred to a Kingsport doctor by Dr. Burgin Dossett, Jr.

of Johnson City. The local physician then referred him to the specialist at Vanderbilt's hospital. "I could have put it off longer," Van Huss said Thursday in a telephone interview, "but there was a cancellation and I decided to go ahead and have the surgery done. There's a pretty long waiting list to see this doctor." Van Huss began having trouble with one of his legs again the same way it bothered him before. "There was numbness in one BUCK VAN HUSS of my legs," he said, "and the blood wasn't circulating right.

"There's some kind of blockage, so they're going to go in there and clean it out." The surgery, he says, isn't too serious. "It's just something that needs to be done." The operation will be performed in the legs, but it has to do with the circulation of the blood from the heart. "It's not a real serious type of heart surgery," Van HUH related, "but it's been bothering me and I'll be better off when they get it done." The Tribe coach didn't even know the banquet had been postponed. "I hate they did that," ha said. "I wish they'd go ahead and have it" Assistant coach Anthony Eckel is handling the chores in Van Huss' absence, but the workouts are light.

Right now, they're "just shooting a little." After the surgery, Buck will remain at Vanderbilt "for about two weeks." "I asked them how long I'd be down here and they told me at least a couple of weeks after the surgery," Van Huss said. "But if I can get out any sooner, I will." Anyone wishing to send flowers or cards to the D-B coach may send them to a i i i Room F7439, Nashville. Seemingly in good spirits, Van Huss made a promise before ending Thursday's conversation. "I'm going to come out of here meaner than ever," he chuckled. Wood Beats Ryan In Mound Star Showdown From Wire Dispatches It was a "classic confrontation," Chicago White Sox manager Chuck Tanner said of Thursday's pitching duel between his own knuckleballer, Wilbur Wood, and California's Nolan Ryan, the major league strikeout king.

"To me, it was a contest between baseball's hardest thrower and a guy who makes the ball dance," Tanner said. The dancer won over the rifleman, 4-1, but he needed some help from a smoke thrower himself. Wood got his llth win against three defeats, but was taken out in the ninth when the Angels collected three of their game-total six singles. Cy Acosta finished up. BASEBALL.

Roundup "I wasn't afraid to leave Wood in," Tanner explained, "but I wanted to give them a different look. A hard thrower has a little edge, so I put one in." Ryan struck out 13 batters, the sixth time this season he has whiffed 10 or more to boost his leading total to 107. Rico Petrocelli clubbed a homer and three singles to drive in three runs and score three times as the Boston Red Sox throttled the Milwaukee Brewers, 10-1, behind the five-hit pitching of Bill Lee. The Red Sox clawed four Milwaukee pitchers for 16 hits for their second straight win after a batting order shakeup by manager Eddie Kasko. Petrocelli drilled his bases-empty homer into the leftf ield screen in the third inning as Boston jumped to a 3-1 lead.

Dick McAuliffe's three-run homer in the fourth inning provided Mickey Lolich all the WILBUR WOOD runs he needed to give Detroit's Tigers a 4-0 victory over the New York Yankees. Lolich scattered six singles and struck out three batters to win his third game of the season, as opposed to five defeats. It was his first shutout of the year. McAuliffe tagged loser George Medich for his first homer of the season after singles by Gates Brown and Duke Sims. Righthander Carl Morton pitched a five- hitter and doubled in the winning run as the Atlanta Braves edged by San Francisco, 2-1.

The Giants took a 1-0 lead on an unearned run, but Dave Johnson tied the score with his seventh homer. Morton doubled to deep left- center, plating Johnny Gates who had reached on a fielder's choice. Sam McDowell, touched for nine hits in six innings, suffered the loss. Orioles' Field Destroyed But The Show Will Go On ByBOBFOLEY Times-News Sports Writer BLUEFIELD The motto of the 1973 Appalachian League Bluefield Orioles should be "The Show Must Go On." With the season's opening less than a month away, fire leveled ancient Bowen Field early Wednesday morning, causing an estimated $180,000 worth of damage. State fire officials spent Wednesday picking through the debris, and lightning, which struck a transformer on a third baseline- power pole, has been listed as the probable cause of the blaze.

Baltimore Orioles Farm Director Jack Pastore arrived in town Thursday, and already preparations are being made to get the stadium in shape in time for the season's opener. He sent wires Thursday for signed players to report on schedule. Both grandstands, the press box and concession stands were destroyed. The only remaining building was a recently- constructed small building for Oriole staff members. However, a mobile home will be used for a concession stand, portable bleachers will be brought in and players will use the dressing facilities of nearby Mitchell Stadium, a football complex.

The facility was insured for only $62,000. A small donation from the Orioles, some help from the city and volunteer help will all figure in its reconstruction. Mayor Edwin Elliott has received in the neighborhood of 200 phone calls from parties volunteering labor, electrical, plumbing and similar help towards Bowen Field's rebuilding. The Orioles, one of the most successful of the Appalachian League franchises throughout the years, open at Wy theville for a two-game series June 19-20 before returning home the following evening to play Covington. District, Regional Games Postponed Rain once again washed out the loser's bracket finals of the District Two Tournament between Johnson City and Daniel Boone at Yankee Park in Johnson City Thursday night.

The rainout was a crucial one. If tonight's game is washed, it would throw the event into an undecided situation, in that the Regional is scheduled to start Tuesday at J. Fred Johnson Stadium. At least two and maybe three -games remain in the District Two event. If tonight's game is played, a doublheader will be played Saturday.

Erwin is already in the finals. Weather permitting, the Virginia Region Baseball championship will be decided today. Wednesday, Castlewood carved out a lead over Powell Valley when heavy rains halted action in the bottom of the fifth with Vikings on second and third and one out. Thursday, the rains kept the game from being completed. The game is slated to resume today at 5:00.

Nick la us In Tie ANDRE RELEFORD ROGER BROEY Releford Guns For Milestone By BILL LANE Times-News Sports Editor Dobyns-Bennett and Memphis high school athletes head the list of favorites for the TSSAA track and field championships Saturday at Tom Black Track on the University of Tennessee campus in Knoxville. D-B's Andre Releford will run the 100-yard dash in an attempt to become the first three-time winner of that event. Releford will race for the state 220 championship also. He finished second in the event in 1971 and third last year. D-B's Darwin Bond, now a member of the Tennessee track team, won the 440 three years straight, 1968-69-70, and John Barber of Memphis Messick took the 220 title three straight years, 1951-52-53.

In addition to the 100 run, Releford will be trying for his first 220 state title. He finished second in 1971 and third last year in the event. The fleet Dobyns-Bennett runner holds the state 100-yard record at 9.5 seconds. The TSSAA meet will open at 9 a.m. with field events and track preliminaries.

The finals of running events will be held Saturday night. A lively battle for the mile run appeared to be shaping up between Jay Woods, a 15-year- old sophomore at Raleigh- Egypt in Memphis, and Richard Parsons of Erwin. D-B is twice defending team champion but not a serious contender for the title again. Top contenders are Memphis Wooddale, Clinton, Nashville East and Knox Bearden. Terdell Middleton of Memphis South Side will have a crack at three titles, competing in the long jump, the 220 dash and the 120 high hurdles.

Middleton has the top marks in the hurdles and long jump this season, clearing 24 feet 9 inches and running the hurdles in 14 seconds. Kerry Holt of Nashville Hillsboro is favored in the pole vault, Shannon Leroy of Nashville MBA in the high jump, and Eary Jones of Memphis Melrose with the shot. Releford, with wins in the 220 and 100-yard dashes, has a potential of 12 points. Teammate Roger Brixey could pick up another six in the shot put. Thus, with only two Kingsport participants, it will be virtually impossible for Dan Crowe's Indians to notch a third straight title.

Brixey tossed the shot a school-record 55 feet to place second in the regional last week. Crowe feels that another throw of that length would enable Brixey to win the state event and pick up six points. The most Dobyns-Bennett can, score is 18. ATLANTA (UPI) Always-favored Jack Nicklaus closed with a birdie Thursday to post a 5-under-par 67 and a tie with David Glenz and B.R, "Mac" McLendon for the first round lead in the $150,000 Atlanta Golf Classic. Nicklaus, who has not played since winning the Tournament of Champions last month -his third victory this year in just nine ap-.

pearances placed his approach shot just five feet from the cup and sank the putt he needed to catch Glenz and McLendon. The "Golden Bear," favored to win every time he shows up, made an even more sensational shot nine holes earlier when he nearly went into a lake and still salvaged a par. Tour sophomore Glenz sank a 35-foot eagle putt on his final hole. Glenz, a 24-year-old Oregon native who tied for eighth at Houston and for fourth last week at Memphis, also had two 25-foot birdie putts and another birdie putt of 15 feet. "These greens are so nice, you can have a 30 foot putt and think about making it," the modish Glenz said with a grin.

"On most courses, when you have a 30-footer, you usually think about laying up." Nicklaus, Glenz and McLendon, who had to battle a swirling wind during most of their rounds as late starters over the hilly, rain- soaked Atlanta Country Club course, held a one-stroke lead over a trio of early starters. In at 68 were tour rookies Bruce Ashworth and Tom Kite plus Hubert Green. Dave Hill, winner last week at Memphis, was at 3-under 69 along with Rod Funseth and Larry Wise, a long-time club pro who just rejoined the tour three months ago. Gary Player, making his 1973 U.S. debut after having to delay his return from South Africa because of an operation, shot a 4-over 76 Thursday, nine strokes higher than the score with which he shared the lead in Wednesday's pro-am.

Nicklaus, who missed three relatively short birdie putts, said he was "very happy about my round." The nation's elite among the Southeastern Late Model Sportsman drivers, including national point leader Sam Ard of Asheboro, North Carolina, will compete in the 250- lap event which features a total purse of over $5,000. Then Monday night, Bristol International Speedway will roll out its carpet to the same bunch of competitors in the Permatex 300, a race whose purse totals over $15,000. In between the two special events, drivers converging on the Tri-Cities area will have their choice of three other NASCAR-sanctioned faculties on Saturday, including Coeburn, Hickory and Maryville.

All are within close driving distance. A total of 27 entries have been received by Kingsport International Speedway officials, and defending national champion Jack Ingram indicated earlier in the season he'd run in all the special events there. Ard, anxious to pad his lead in the double points race which starts at 8:00 with qualifying beginning at 7:00, already has one victory at KIS this year and finished fourth his other time out. Only 26 cars will start on the track, a factor which will make the qualifying especially keen. The regular weekly program will be resumed next week.

Ard will meet stiff competition from the red-hot L. D. Ottinger of Newport, 1973 KIS point leader. Ottinger is a past KIS track champion as are other entrants Gene Glover, John A. Utsman and Hank Maxwell, also of Newport.

Glover owns one victory this season while Maxwell and reigning titlist Utsman are both seeking their first win. Maxwell held the point lead until Ottinger took it away from him last week. Other well-known entrants include Martinsville's Jimmie Hensley, who's fared exceptionally well in KIS' past special races; Bradley Teague and Connie Saylor of Johnson City; Knoxville's Jim Hunter; Newport's Doyle Belcher and Bristol's Gary O'Dell. At Bristol Memorial Day evening, the LMS drivers will be joined by a pair of outstanding veteran Grand National drivers, Dave Marcis and Benny Parsons. Parsons recently annexed the $10,000 prize for holding the Winston Cup point lead a fourth of the way through the season.

Race time is 8:00 with two 204ap qualifying races, starting at 7:00 and 7:30, determining how the 36 Late Models that start will line up.
