41 jwruvn 5ar wwr-i 1 In This Corner Hitless az Finds Another Way to Grab Headlines By BILL HODGE Executive Sports Editor ST LOUIS Triple-crown winner- Carl Yastrzemski of the Boston Red Sox found a new way to become a central figure in the 1967 World Series Saturday On opening day in Boston he gained plaudits for his defensive play on a hit less day in game No 2-hq drove in four runs with two home runs and in game No 3 he unsuccessfully dodged a pitch The pitch struck him and it set off a controversy which lived beyond the brief exchange of words behind home plate in the first inning of this game which saw the St Louis Cardinals winning 5-2 and taking a 2-1 edge in the October classic Red Sox manager Dick Williams charged that Cardinal winning pitcher Nelson riles was trying to hit Yastrzemski is a lot of difference between a brush-back and throwing at a batter to hit him said Williams in his temporary office-on-th e-road below Busch Memorial Stadium following the game you are trying to brush back you throw up here (indicating with his arm to shoulder and head area) and when trying to hit somebody you throw down here (his arm now indicating the back of the knees) This is where he threw it" Cardinals manager Red Schoendienst was asked what he had said in the first inning when he rushed onto the field to counter against protest told them that Briles was not throwing at anybody and that if he had been at least he didn't pop off in the paper about how he was going to knock somebody was the Redbirds reply This was a reference to Boston right-hander Jim statements published in Boston during the first two days of the Series Cardinals lead-off man Lou Brock who had gone four-for-four at the plate on opening day had been knocked down by Lonborg as he led off game No 2 on Thursday at Fenway Park was brushed Schoendienst reminded you get four hits you expect to have them try to move the ball around on you I know how many of you were present when I first said that at Nothing was settled by the dispute because both sides seem honestly convinced they are right SOX IN SIX SAYS WILLIAMS not at the end of the said the Red Sox manager guess had it right after all I guess we ere just going to have to win in six Schoendienst still refuses to predict who will win or how long the Series will go will just go along playing them one at a time like we did during the he said got beat by a fine pitching job up there and they got beat by a fine pitching job BRILES PITCHED WELL AGAINST Whether the Red Sox win this World Series or not Yastrzemski will be a winner The 28-year-old Red Sox left-fielder had a big reputation before in the American League where he won the home run batting and runs-batted-in titles during regular season But this World Scries has spread his fame He is on everybody's lips wherever the Series goes Red Sox manager Williams admitted that Redbirds pitcher Briles did a good job on him Saturday said they were keeping the ball away from remarked Williams did they pitch him in somebody asked was the reply Briles said he retired Yastrzemski twice on fast balls and once on a breaking ball came up in the fourth inning with Dalton Jones on base and grounded a curve ball into a double play With Jones aboard and one away in the sixth Yastrzemski took a curve ball swung at a fast ball fouled off an inside fast ball and then grounded out on a fast ball to the right side In the eighth with nobody aboard Yastrzemski swung on an inside fast ball and then grounded out to the right side on a fast ball which was in close on him Rut Yastrzemski is one of those fellows who is more exciting grounding out than are most players like teammate Reggie Smith or Cardinal Mike Shannon who are hitting home runs Even more exciting than two-run home runs like' Shannon smashed into the left field stands in the second inning which has as much to do with winning a ball game here on this day as did seven-hitler This was a game incidentally which looked like it might he rained nut The commissioner's office still was doubtful enough about conditions as the game got under way and ordered the stadium lights turned on and left burning although the sun came out shortly after the Red Sox bus arrived at the players' gate and shined brightly throughout most of the game In Boston tell you that the presence of even has something to do with weather clearing although it worked against them on this day Eir-Actor Hurls Us' ence of Brock on the base paths intimidated Lee Stange the third of four Boston pitchers into yielding an unearned run The St Louis swifty pushed a bunt single past Stange leading off the Cards' sixth and danced daringly off first as Stange prepared to pitch to (Turn to Page 7D Col 3) center his second of three consecutive' hits drove across Andrews but Yaz and George Scott took the Sox out of the inning with infield outs SMITH LED off the Boston seventh with a towering fly that dropped into the St Louis bullpen for a homer but by that lime it was 4-1 in favor of the Cards as the mere pres and Smith in the third fourth and fifth but each remained anchored to first Mike Andrews pinch hitting for reliever Gary Waslewski led off the sixth with a single and became the first Boston runner to reach second as Jose Tartahull was thrown out in an unsuccessful attempt for a bunt single It was ruled a sacrifice Jones' single to right have finished Bell right then and there but Yastrzemski despite slipping on the sodden turf pegged Javier out at second and Bell finished the inning only to be yanked for a pinch hitter Briles treated to a 3-0 lead was ready to protect it at all costs although he got behind several hitters He allowed singles by Elston Howard Jones retiring the meek Cepada on a pop-up The second- inning was even worse torture for Bell a 30-year-old journeyman righthander McCARVER HIT a sharp bouncer up the middle and Shannon quickly unloaded his second series homer a few rows into the elevated stands in left Julian single might Cincy TDs in Final Period Defeat Wichita State 14-6 I Oh Those Bearcats WSU Fir it Down 14 17 Net Verdi Ruihinq 144 222 Net Yard! pulled the string with a two-run homer in the second inning enabling the St Louis Cardinals to beat the Red Sox 5-2 and take a 2-1 games lead in the world series The huge crowd of 54575 largest in St Louis sports history was barely seated when Brock lined Gary second pitch into the left centerfield alley for three bases and trotted home on Curt Flood's looping single to center An inning later Shannon fol-' lowed a single by Tim McCar-ver with a solid Mast into the left field seats With that Beetle-browed Nelson Briles a 24-year-old former actor had all the support he needed although swift legs and Orlando Cepeda's awakened bat provided insurance runs in the sixth and eighth innings BRILES MAKING his first World Series appearance befuddled Boston slugger Carl Yastrzemski with his no-windup delivery and breaking pitches easing his wav out of three sticky innings by getting Yaz 'on harmless rollers to second baseman Julian Javier The husky righthander who yielded seven hits but permitted only two runners past first base was in control throughout the game playing in glaring hazy sunshine after a heavy morning mist had burned away He struck out four and held the Red Sox power in check with the exception of Reggie leadoff homer in the seventh inning which cut the deficit to 4-2 BROCK SCORED two runs for the Cards just as he did in St 2-1 first game victory He struck quickly this time His line shot carried between left fielder Yastrzemski and centcrfielder Smith and-carom-med off the wall Yaz retrieved the ball on the warning track but the relay from Rico Petro-celli to third baseman Dalton Jones was just too late Flood then dropped his single in front of the on rushing Smith before Bell pitched out of the inning by getting Roger Maris on a double play bouncer and two fourth-quarter touchdowns and a 14 to 6 Missouri Valley Conference victory Saturday night Cincinnati winless in two previous non-conference starts finally broke the backs with steady pressure which persisted after WSU had scored the opening touchdown to lead 64) But when the Cats exploded they left no doubts about it And on both occasions in the final period they capitalized on costly WSU mistakes WHAT PROVED TO be the game-winner was a five-yard pass from 6-foot-4 quarterback Greg Cook to end Tom Ross-ley with 8:20 remaining in the game The play climaxed a 55-yard drive which used 17 plays But it took two costly penalties to keep it going One was on an interference call which gave the host Bearcats a first down on the WSU 29-yard line The other was an offsides call on fourth down which moved the ball to the five after the Shockers had tackled tailback Lloyd Pate on the 20-yard line Three plays after the offside Cook dropped back and found Rossley a 6-foot-3 junior end from a town appropriately named Painesville Ohio all alone in the end zone Another end Jim then stepped to the line and place kicked the goal which separated the teams for good After that the Shockers who made a supreme bid for victory despite the fact that quarterback John Eckman did not dress threatened behind the direction of Joe Lavage The Shocks drove to the 50-yard line and were within smelling distance of field goal country But here Lamont Johnson a bull of a runner for WSU fumbled and the ball was recovered by Cincy back Mike Barrett As time was running out on the Shockers the rugged Pale who set a new all time CU rushing record rumbled around his own left end for 17 yards to punctuate the victory OVERALL THE SHOCKERS showed vast improvement over the past when you consider Eckman was not in the game They drove 44-yards in 10 plays to score a touchdown in the first period Nose guard Ronnie Cox who joined linebackers Rick Wheeler and Randy Lemons and backs Charlie (Torn to Page 6D Big Eight Conference championship by leading for only those final 71 seconds Nebraska started its successful drive on its own 15-yard There the Wildcat defense became even tougher They held at the fumble recoveries by nose guard Ken Eckardl for its two first quarter touchdowns Early in the game Coble kicked line with remaining in the game The Wildcats gave up real estate grudgingly but the Huskers came up with vital third down plays to keep grinding away 1 Nebraska's sophomore quarterback Frank Patrick who played an outstanding game pulled the first saver with third down and seven to go
