When No 1-ranked Penn State heard the news that Missouri whipped Nebraska Penn State snatched up a Sugar Bowl invitation in hopes of meeting 1 Oth Loss for Jayhawks sKU K-State Hits Early 9 4-7 Mark Is Their Best Since 1974 RANDY BROWN Sports Editor MANHATTAN Kan Two football programs going in opposite directions whizzed past each other Saturday on a cool sunny windy afternoon The Kansas State Wildcats full of enthusiasm and daring took the Kansas Jayhawks by the throat in the very early going and never let go cruising to a 36-20 victory before the largest crowd ever to see a football game in Manhattan 45115 The Jayhawks dull by nature and made even more listless by the firing of head coach Bud Moore last week can only be thankful the game was the Mason's last for both teams Kansas has now been humbled by the two teams it Moore Face the Press By MIKE HALL Staff Writer MANHATTAN Kan There was one obvious question There was no one to answer it The question was: Why did Kansas University with everything to gain and nothing to lose shun a wide-open offense in the First half here Saturday against Kansas State University? The only man who knew the real truth deposed head coach Bud Moore was not available for questioning When the game ended with the Wildcats on top 36-20 Moore was escorted into the KU locker room by a security guard AND WHILE reporters waited outside closed doors for nearly 20 minutes Moore was exiting out the back It was not a flagrant gesture of his feelings over being fired Thursday It was pre-arranged Much like former heavyweight champion Floyd Patterson's planned secret escapes Moore realized the possibility he would be too emotional to face an inquisitive press while at his weakest He talked to his players briefly then left them alone with their thoughts wasn't emotionally capable of facing the Hid sports information Don Baker According to freshman quarterback Kevin Clinton a Wichita Southeast product Moore's message was to our chins up and pull together in the future he said 'Don't give up' He was very saddened at the time" Added sophomore starting quarterback Harry Sydney: just Hid he had enjoyed being with us and to get a good education Everybody was real emotional" HOWEVER THAT emotion came after the game not before and not during And that may have accounted for KU's listless first-half attack The Jayhawks gained only 91 yards in 35 plays a 26 per-play average The Jayhawks' lack of emotion was directly the opposite of the anticipated KSU's Jim Dickey predicted Moore's firing would cause Sydney was more to the point hard to get fired up when you know that win or lose the coach is going to be gone after the game" Emotion said Sydney was up and down throughout the contest we were ready to go and sometimes we just took it easy" SYDNEY DREW the first-half assignment but was on his way out at the end of the first quarter "I was told to warm said Clinton who had thought at the first of the week he would get the starting assignment That fell through when his injured wrist failed to respond Ginton was ready to go in the second quarter but Sydney was given one more series and he marched the team from its 26 to KSU's 6 At that point on fourth down a Mike Hubach field goal went awry from 26 yards out Sydney said the miss took a lot out of the Jayhawks scoring early and that field goal miss made a big Ginton did start the second half throwing 19 times And although he completed only six he had 103 yards and some points Would he have made a difference in the first half? don't know we still had to get our running game established first" answered Clinton And maybe that answers the obvious question likes and needs to beat the most: Missouri and K-State Kansu finishing last in the Big Eight for the first time since 1969 ended its woeful Mason with a 1-10 record the worst since 1954 under the Chuck Mather regime But K-State which had a 474-247 total offense edge Saturday probably would like to play 11 more games The Wildcats had a 4-7 Mason the best since 1974 when Vince Gibson was still coaching here And K-State's 3-4 Big Eight record is the best since the 1970 Gibson guys And the 'Cats broke a five-game losing streak against KU First-year Wildcat coach Jim Dickey sounded a low-key warning after the game After praising his team's seniors Dickey talked of the future: know from now on this is going to be the kind of game that everyone in Kansu has always wanted A real rivalry" The rivalry wasn't very clou Saturday K-State came out running the ball the Wildcats' 333-yard game total was by far the best of the Mason and went 72 yards in 8 plays after the opening kickoff The only pass of the series was the big play a 22-yard toss from quarterback Dan Manucci to running back Eddy Whitley Tony Brown scored from the KU 1 Jim Ginther kicked the PAT and K-State had a 7-0 lead with just over three minutes gone Late in the period the Wildcats marched 72 yards to the KU 6 in methodical fashion then had to settle for a 24-yard field goal by Ginther It wu the first field goal of the year for the Wildcats who came into the game one of only two NCAA division teams (Rice being the other) that hadn't kicked at least one three-pointer this (See KANSAS 19G Col I) ISU Crushes Shocks Sycamores Roar To 42-18 Win By BILL MacKAY Staff Writer TERRE HAUTE Ind Wichita State's Shockers were trounced by Indiana State 42-18 Saturday afternoon in the final game of the Mason for both Missouri Valley Conference football teams It also may have been the final game at WSU for Coach Jim Wright His fate is expected to be decided Monday at a meeting of the school's 25-member athletic board Indiana state's home uniforms dotely resemble those worn by Drake The Shockers played in the ume trance-like state they displayed at Des Moines six weeks ago in their 48-22 bombing by the Drake Bulldogs Indiana State winner of only two football games coming into the contest looked like MVC champions rather than the league doormats they had been this Mason They made it look easy as they raced to a 28 4) lead over the first 20 minutes of play scoring touchdowns on four of their first five possessions In so doing the Sycamores achieved a notable first in their Mason of frustration In 10 previous games they had scored only a lone field goal in the first quarter while being outscored 61-3 But against the sleepwalking WSU defenM ISU crossed the goal line with 2:32 remaining in the first period That touchdown hors d'oeuvre gave the Sycamores an immerae appetite for a full-coune scoring banquet They got two more touchdowns early in the second quarter within a 59-second span Wichita State's fumble- and interception-prone
