Turbine 'Barf Guys' Falter LEONARD AND HILL started from the first two positions in the first row and Unser from third spot on that row Ruby started from the second row Instead of an orderly alignment of cars in rows of three the race got off with an exceptionally ragged formation Hill was immediately gobbled up in traffic! And the first stage of the race was between Leonard and Unser Turn to Page 3C Col 1 Leonard's Turbine Said Stopped Due to Fuel Governor Trouble (C) Times News Service INDIANAPOLIS The bad guys lost and you never saw such embarrassment as Bobby Unser whipped their three turbine ogres setting records all the way through the 52nd running of the Indianapolis 500 Thursday It was a dose thing toward the end when two of the Lotus turbines took 1 advantage of the rules to balk Unser But on the 191st lap of the 200-lap race Just when Joe Leonard seemed to have won by- a freak his car collapsed It quit Just like that and cleared the way for Ui All three of Andy turbine entries dropped out one of them in scrapyard condition Graham No 70 hit the wall on the 111th lap Art No 20 died on dreaded turbines A1 Unser fell out of the race however when he lost a wheel on the 40th lap record time for the 500 miles around the oval 2tt-mile Indianapolis Motor Speedway was 3 hours 16 minutes 1375 seconds for an average speed of 152882 miles an hour The old record was 151207 set last year by A Foyt AMONG THEM Unser Leonard and Ruby also set records for average speed at most of the 10-lap intervals Many of the previous 10-lap records had been set in 1967 by Pamelli Jones in an earlier Granatelli turbine car The Canadian Pratt Whitney turbine power plants are noted for their reliability but evidently cars were vulnerable today Even before they collapsed they were running slower than the piston cars Why? The word from press aide was that the suspensions systems of the cars were brand-new having been changed to conform with a USAC ruling on the steel material Because this rain had limited testing the Granatelli crews had never been able to the chassis properly Only three drivers held the lead Unser Leonard and and it was their race all the way INDIANAPOLIS Ind (AP) -S A Silbermann chairman of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Technical Committee described the sudden failure of Joe Lotus turbine late in the 500-mile race Thursday as an The cars had been running under the yellow your light after a minor accident with Leonard holding the lead The green light came on just as Leonard reached the starting line on the main and died and he coasted into the infield Silbermann explained that the Pratt Whitney turbine engines have a fuel governor which prevents them being turned so fast they might fall apart This safety device took over when Leonard according to Silbermann apparently hit the accelerator too hard The technical committee head listed the loss of the other two Lotus turbines as a lost wheel in the case of Graham Hill and a gear box failure in the case of the 188th lap and No who comes from Albuquerque has now won four of five races on the Championship Trail and is well on his way toward winning the 1968 title He drove an Eagle manufactured by Dan California company and door at the Miller Theater Thursday morning and smiling happily about the turnout for the closed-circuit telecast of the Indianapolis 500-mile auto race have only 50 tickets left" he said some 30 minutes before the race was to begin have no trouble selling So for a second straight year the closed-circuit show was a sell-out reaching approximately 1885 racing enthusiasts While driving skill and good machines denied spectators the kind of spectacular crashes provided by some past Speedway classics the fans had many fine moments CROWD CHEERS AS TURBINE FAILS Certainly the highlight was when the front-running Andy Granatelli turbine car driven by Joe Leonard conked out with 22 miles remaining The loudest cheer of the day broke forth in the theater when Leonard pulled off the track and stopped some 10 laps short of victory when a fuel governor stalled the engine after Leonard hit the accelerator too hard Possibly figuring in the anti-Granatelli feeling among the closed-circuit telecast crowd was the fact that another Granatelli car driven by Art Pollard had been holding back winner Bobby Unser by driving slowly in front of him while the yellow caution light was on Unser was about ready to Pollard when Carl car spun and caught fire in the middle of the backstretch with the leaders about 22 laps from home Leonard was leading Unser by slightly over seven seconds when the yellow light went on which meant every car had to hold its position That's when Pollard in front of Unser slowed down and teammate Leonard increased his lead to 11 seconds before the track stewards realized what was happening Spectators in the theater knew of this bit of skullduggery as soon as did the racing stewards maybe a little sooner' Thus Unser's victory was a popular one in Wichita at least THREE LEADERS DURING RACE Unser Leonard and Lloyd Ruby of Wichita Falls Tex were the only leaders in the race but they passed it around Leonard led at the start but was passed early by Unser who was the 50-mile leader Unser led most of the race but lost it to Ruby during a pit stop with 82 miles remaining Ruby in turn lost it to Leonard when the Ruby car developed engine troubles Then trouble came eventually to Leonard when it looked like he could not lose The fans in the theater saw it all cheered their favorites and of course cheered misfortunes which befell some others Closed-circuit television crowds never cease to amaze in one respect and that- is how they make it an audience-participation show Some points of protocol were undefined for telecast however When they played the Star-Spangled Banner at Indianapolis persons in the lower lobby remained seated and everybody in the balcony stood difficult to say who was right hi i Friday May 31 1968 Page 1C Attendance Down From
