Transportation is a pressing need of the health and welfare agencies in Wichita If you have a car and some time to give you could transport persons to and from doctor and dentist appointments to therapy treatments as well as to the grocery store These are senior citizens who have given up their driver's licenses Now that school has started many handicapped children will need rides to their special education classes Sometimes transportation is needed when an emergency arises and people are needed to be on call with an agency in order that they may be contacted immediately If it is possible to give some of your time to someone less fortunate who cannot afford transportation please call the Volunteer Bureau at 264-9301 Legislature voted on the change in the Kansas abortion law? A The change in the Kansas abortion law was one small section of the Kansas Criminal Code Bill Therefore the senators voted on the total bill and not just on the changes in the abortion law The only place where there might have been a recorded vote was during committee hearings prior to a vote on the entire bill in the Senate For more information on committee hearings on the bill you can contact the secretary of state for Kansas This office maintains the minutes of legislative hearings Scot Was Tax Where did the term scot free originate? I have heard it originated in Scotland A In medieval England was a municipal tax assessed according to ability to pay To get off scot free was to be freed from having to pay any of the tax The term now denotes -exemption from punishment loss or penalty When you have a question send it to The Answer Man and let us help you Yon have a right to fair treatment and information from government at all levels When you have a problem or question send it to The Answer Man The Wichita Beacon PO Box 820 Wichita Kan Please include your name and address so we can contact you for additional information if needed The Bystander leap One guess is that they climb up the heavy wire sides of the cage There was a skunk somewhere in the vicinity but its cage did not loom into view TWO GRAY WOLVES paced back and forth and let you know they have no use for man One thing about the zoo it presents a number of animals native to Kansas Not every child gets to see a badger although they frequent the state At the Great Bend zoo there is a badger jack-rabbits coons and I guess a skunk A number of exotic creatures are on view Judging from their names they were from Central or South America A peccary or so reminded one of southern Arizona and Texas A coatimundi was reminiscent of World War II The coatimundi is a creature that passes for a coon in Central America It has a long snout big claws and quite a tail SOLDIERS ALWAYS were bringing a coatimundi to Wichita They can tear up the furniture without half trying so most of them ended up in the Wichita zoo Great Bend's zoo has a fine display of pheasants and numerous other birds There is about everything in the bird line from a turkey buzzard to a peacock Some of the most acrobatic monkeys you ever watched are on exhibit Bigger animals range from elk to an antelope from India If there were lions and tigers they evaded us but there were a couple of rattlesnakes If you have an hour to kill fail to see this zoo And don't ask me if it is better than the one in Garden City Talk of the Town Will Return Sept 29 Tennis Activity Among Black Youngsters Causes Some McAdams Recreation Park By GLENDA HOLDER Beacon Staff Writer Fall officially A The city code slates: no person shall drive any motor vehicle with any sign poster or other nontransparent material upon the front windshield sidewings side or rear windows of such vehicle other than a certificate or other papers required to be so displayed by law 99 It is possible that the driver of such vehicles could be charged under the provisions of this section of the code Vote Record Kept but Is it possible for me to find out how the Wichita senators in the Kansas When you have an hour to kill on a bird photographing expedition why not visit a zoo? We did this a few days ago at Great Bend Now I knew that Garden City has a wonderful zoo but I had forgotten all about the one at Great Bend It is quite possible I never knew the city had a zoo It is named the Brit Spaugh Memorial Zoo in memory of the man who tended it many years and who died a decade or so ago We were passing the park with ils proverbial locomotive when the Zoo sign appeared It was too early to head for the Cheyenne Bottoms for pelican pictures so it was decided to kill an hour We almost did not have to go to the Bottoms Right there in the first pond were two beautiful swans They had snow white bodies with coal black necks and bright red beaks How could you beat that for color? THE PHOTOGRAPHER told me lo walk to the end of the pond where the swans were loitering and walk to the fence He figured the birds would swim toward him and he would get a shot in proper lighting The maneuver did not work It was apparent that visitors had been tossing goodies to the swans They swam up dose to me and indicated a handout would be in order There were fine cranes on view A good shot would have been one of sleeping flamingoes standing on one leg in a stiff wind with their heads resting on their backs The high fence blocked the photo The zoo puts on a good bear show There are a couple of polar bears along with a baby polar bear Himalayan bears and just plain old bears The fox exhibit proved a puzzle Each cage had a shelf 10 or 11 fret above the floor Every fox in the zoo was sleeping up on a shelf Puzzle How did the foxes get up there? It would be a tremendous Page 16B 552 inches of rain LaCygne in east central Kansas reported 767 inches Although much of the state received moderately heavy rain the Wichita area has received officially only 71 of an inch at the Wichita Airport The downtown area received 84 of an inch 82 of an inch was reported at McConnell Air Force Base 79 of an inch at Mt Vernon and Oliver 67 of an inch at Seneca at Pawnee and 50 of an inch in the northeast section of Wichita THE KANSAS Highway Patrol reported the following roads closed because of high water: K135 two miles east of LaCygne K31 five miles west of Fulton and K7 at Hardin Two roads that had been closed Tuesday night K101 north of Edna and K65 at Xenia now are open There is little movement in the frontal system that has covered Kansas for the past several days However according to Pike the rain be out of the Wichita area by tonight" He added that there is a possibility of the sun breaking through the cloud cover Thursday afternoon and unknown household superstars like Arthur he said ASHE RECENTLY signed a five-year contract reportedly valued at $750000 He will work for Lamar Hunt a Dallas millionaire and sportsman of the boys have been hurt by the tag some non-players placed on them of 'playing the white game Doughty said As Coach Doughty listened to the perpetual volleys being made by his young team Saturday he spoke about its growth among blacks: BELIEVE this is going to be the game of the He pointed out one of his best players saying: King Wichita was the top McAdams tennis player this summer He beat out many men of the city and other junior assistants are teaching in the tennis program" he concluded Charles Maloney a Woodman Elementary School teacher and Doughty are city-paid instructors in the two-year-program TOM ALLEN deputy director of parks and recreation said: regular city summer program schedule was extended this year for some centers McAdams was one" as far as any other facilities built in that park go none has been planned" Allen added An irrigation setup and paving 15th Street from Ohio to New York (through McAdams Park) as the park roadway is scheduled for 1970 park improvements and part of the Canal Route acquisition improvement project THERE IS evidence of need at McAdams Park" he said are ways in which that can be accomplished will be exploring with the Model Cities people to see if this program (tennis) can be demonstrated in the second year of the recreation official said ALLEN went on to cite three reasons for the city's lack of funding additional park improvements at McAdams: don't have these FORECASTERS SAID the outlook was for more rain elsewhere They said the frontal system which produced the deluges had become largely stationary and that of showers aid thunderstorms were likely into the Slowly decreasing cloudiness and cool temperatures are to prevail Pike said Wichita recorded an overnight tow of 52 degrees Highs across the state will range in the mid 70s Thursday Wichita's expected high Thursday is 75 degrees Grants Announced For Kansas Towns WASHINGTON (UPI) A series of grants loans and fund reservations was announced Tuesday by the Department of Housing and Urban Development It included: Water and Sewer Program: Hutchinson Kan $351200 for improvements to the storm sewer system El Dorado Kan $438500 for modernization and improvements of the water treatment plant and water pumping facilities (improvements) in our 1971 park improvements budget people in the northeast area have been resisting the need for facilities just in the McAdams Park have done many thousands of dollars of work in McAdams Park and there are many other areas of he said The total cost of McAdams Park improvements is $267505 Criss Shaw left Arthur Cohee Pupils played at recess By KENNETH ANDREWS Beacon Staff Writer Tennis activity among black youngsters has caused problems" at McAdams Recreation Stiff Pholoi Charles (Goose) Doughty.
