Published Tuesday and Friday Afternoons i Y0LUME1 NEEDLES, CALIF ORNIA, DECEMBER 17, 1915 NUMBER. 100 SCHOOL NOTES UNDERWRITERS ISSUE WARNING MINING PAYS MORE THAN OTHER STOCK STEAM LAUNDRY FOR NEEDLES soon after arriving went into convulsion and physicians found it necessary to take, the little fellow to the hospital where ah operation was performed removing a piece of skull which was fractured and pressing the brain. News-received this morning would seem to indicate that he is out of probable danger and that Dameille will be able to preach Sunday as usual. V.

Articles of Incorporation Are Filed and New Business Will Soon Start Articles of incorporationf the Need li Steam- Laundry, have been forwarded to San Bernardino and from there to the secretary at Sacramento, the in-corporators being. Ira V. Woolf, E. J. Wadley and Roy L.

French. As soon as the machinery arrives it will be installed on Booth Avenue, two blocks north of the Santa Fe offices, -and will; ready for work about the 20th of January. Mr. Woolf has been connected. with the local Harvey 'house -steam laundry for the past seven, and a half years and thoroughly understands the business.

The' hew concern will turn out nothing -but first-class work and its plant will be large enough to handle all local business as well as all business that may come in from Oatman Goldroads, Kingman, Searchlight, Goffs, Parker and other places. Steam laundries have not fared very well in Needles heretofore, owing to fire accidents, but let us that the-Needles Steam Laundry soon; to be, will not meet with the same fate, as a first-class steam laundry should do a splendid local business besides taking care of outside work. Wixom a Fizzle i In the election' held at San Bernardino last Tuesday, Mayor George H. Wixom won -out over his opponent, ex-May or Catick, by a vote of 3698 to 1836, Or a majority of Catick' received less votes than there were signatures to the recall petition. The results, should mean the stoppage of -further, political bickerings in the city of San Bernardino, which has been torn asunder with factional elections during, the past two or three years.

pr. Hart, resident dentist, Briggs block. Advt one -legitimate undertaking-rthe French Panama canal company --than has been lost to all the wildcat: mining promoters who ever operated iri this Which brings pife to the query. What is legitimate and what is wildcatting Of course; it is easy to designate the man -who secures title to a claimor two, incorporates; sells, stock, pockets the and decamps, as a wildcatter, but' too many people who have invested in a mining venture which has' been honestly conducted but with poor judgement and no returns, are won tto. raise the cry wildcat And there enters the line of demarcation between the legitimate mining venture and the wildcat.

proposition. If there, be. sufficient surface' indications to warrant prospecting development ork; if -there be an honesty, of purpose the expenditure of funds raised by stock, if there be a reasonable proportion -of the mopey secured put into the actual work of sinking, drifting and crosscutting, then it. must be designated a legitimate enterprise, even though no mineral is ever found. It takes a certain amount of money to guarantee the full exploitation of any mining property, and unless the promoter has this full amount with which to launch the company, 'which' is seldom' the case, (if it were he would, have no need to organize a company), then he must necessarily expend a proportion of the first funds raised to secure additional funds that are' needed.

Advertising and printing expenditures are necessary of just as much as shaft, sinking, for they are conductive fo the success of the enterprise as a whole. salaries to inactive officials are Therefore, if the-enterprise be founded in good faith, even though good judgment -is used, ill-advised expenditures made', and a 100 per cent loss recorded, it must, still' be differentiated from the wildcat scheme just as much as are the numerous industrial and manufacturing concerns which fail because of poor judgment, ill-advised expenditures lack of capital and similar And the investor has -no more reason to raise the cry of wildcat than he has when the bank fails, the railroad' goes into the hands of. a receiver, or the industrial Needles Lodge No. 326, F. It has often been carelessly remarked, by the knowing ones when mining is under die-, cussion that ten times more money is put into, mines than is ever taken that many prospective investors in mining enterprises have been turned to other fields of industry. Lets look the matter squarely in the face, from a coldblooded Statistical point of view, and see if this be true. Taking government statistics as the basis of figures, I find that the percentage of profit per capital' invested, as shown in dividends paid, is follows for the enterprises, named.

Railroads, 3 percent; national banka 61-4 per. cent; insurance companies, 11 per jcent; lumber industries, 14 per 'cent; manufactories, from 3 to 20 per cent, and mining 182 per cent Thus it is apparent that mining pays 60 2-3 times greater returns on capital invested than railroads; 29 times greater returns than national banks'; 16 1-2 times greater returns than' insurance companies; 13 rimes returns than the lumber industries, and rover 9 times greater returns than the highest percentage for the manufacturing enterprises. With Bradstreet as my authority, I also find that the percentage of failures, in mining is 36 per cent as against 54 per cent for commercial lines. Ill go further and quote figures for a single year. In 1907 there was a loss of $360,000,000 in the so-called gilt-edge industrials, a loss greater than that recorded in the entire history of the mining industry.

But you do. pot take into your calculations, the wildcatters, it is remarked. neither do 1 include, in the figures quoted, such enterprises as the famous Mississippi Bubble, the great London rubber the Wallingfords and the numerous other, inventions and get-rich-quick industrial swindles which have, landed their promoters behind bars. There was more money lost in You Must Be Careful or You Might Have Some. Trouble Collecting Insurance The Chamber of Commerce has given out this week the following circular which is self explanatory: To the Publics Your attention is hereby respectfully called to the fact that the introduction about premises of Christmas greens, harvest specimens, moving picture, exhibits, and other inflammable, materials, such as cotton to represent snow, and the like, introduces an additional hazard not contemplated' by the underwriters in issuing policies of indemnity covering the usual fire hazard; and in this connection we refer you to one of the conditions of the.

California standard form of fire insurance policy, wherein it is stipulated that: 'I "Unless otherwise- provided by agreement endorsed hereon or added hereto, this company shall not be liable for loss or damage occuring (a) while the hazard be materially increased by any means within the control of the insured. In addition to danger to property from displays reffered to, the danger to life in crowded stores or places of meeting by reason of panic occasioned by' a fire, even it be small and easily controlled, is so-great that' the underwriters, who have made a. study of such would only be partly fulfilling their duty should they fail to give warning. Use only non-inflammable decorations. Asbestos fibre is a good substitute for cotton, A tree should be set securely, so that the children, in reaching for things, cannot tip it over.
