Sunday August 24 1997 C-2 The Modesto Bee FIRST EDITION Durant finish first Stockton start SPORTS Verg Beaty of Ceres charged from the back of the pack to win the NASCAR Street Stock 25-lap main event Friday night at Altamont Raceway Park Aaron Days of Tracy finished second and Brian Koski of Sam Ramon was third Charlie Kramm main rival for the points lead in the Street Stock division did not finish Troy Shirk of Oakley took the lead from Barry Callouette on Lap 21 and went on to win the 30-lap NASCAR Grand American Modified main event DELTA SPEEDWAY Marc Borges held off Guy Guibor to win the Mini Stock Division main event Friday night at Delta Speedway Joe Pack won the Sportsmen Division Kellen Chadwick won the Box Stock Division Chuck Gurney won the 250 Modified Division and David Goodwill won the 600 Multi Division tioned and even Tripp didn't seem to be celebrating after the checkered flag Tripp tied the record previously held by im Brown with a heat race win last week But Street Stock action belonged to Dewayne Apedaile Apedaile won his first main event with an outside pass of Pete Anderson on the 20th lap of the 25-lap main event Apedaile also won the trophy dash and his heat race Apedaile Anderson Tripp and North Dan Dabbs raced bumper-to-bumper side-by-side for the race's final laps But Dabbs spun out with two laps to go and Anderson was spun by Tripp on the final lap spin brought out a checkered-yellow flag giving Apedaile the first main event of his career ALTAMONT RACEWAY PARK LOCAL MOTORSPORTS Nichols had the fastest car during qualifying and was the fastest during the main event He took the lead on Lap 20 of the 30-lap main event and never gave it up Nichols Mark DeBeaumont and San Carlos' Jimmy Screeton raced side-by-side for the final laps But while they could pull even neither DeBeaumont nor Screeton the track record holder could catch Nichols STREET STOCKS In a season when just about everything has gone right for Jerry Tripp chalk up another highlight for the Stockton resident Tripp won his 1 1th heat race and it been the most quiet record ever set at Stockton It never was men AJ Foyt the owner of Indy 500 car raced here in 1959
