Evening performances Matinees to Dec. 24, Drury Lane East, McCormick Place. Kay Mazzo and Helgi Tomassen of the New York City Ballet will dance leading roles on opening night of "The Nutcracker." Major parts in other performances will be danced by Dennis Poole, Charlene Gehm, and Michael Bjerknes, of the Joffrey Ballet; Cynthia Ann Roses, Gregory Begley, Nancy Onizuka and David Hough, of the Chicago Ballet; and Joann McCarthy, of the Pittsburgh Ballet. "The Nutcracker" also will feature over 80 young dancers selected from the Chicago area. It is the story of a magical Christmas adventure of a girl named Clara, who receives a nutcracker, designed as a toy soldier, from the magician Herr Drosselmeyer.

Late Christmas Eve, Clara awakens and slips downstairs to CHICAGO Nutcracker" ballet heads a list of several Christmas cultural events this weekend. The popular holiday tradition opens Dec. 15 at Arie Crown Theater in McCormick Place, and 25 matinee and evening performances of the classical ballet, with music by Tchaikovsky, are scheduled through Dec 31. In the last two years, more than 100,000 persons saw the peformances, which are sponsored by the Chicago Tribune Charities. In other holiday events, Dickens' Yuletide classic, "A Christmas Carol," plays at Goodman's Mainstage through Dec.

31, and "Snowchildren," a collection of folk tales with Christmas and winter themes accessible for the hearing and sight-impaired, is at the Body Politic on the North Side until Jan. 7. Choreography is under the direction of Ruth Page, who has worked as a dancer, choreographer, artistic director and ballet mistress around the world. A candlelight service and communion will be at 10 p.m. Christmas Eve at Cornell Community Lutheran Church.

The regular Sunday worship service will be at 9 that morning. Sunday school classes will not meet. The senior choir of Cornell Community Lutheran Church will meet at the church at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday to go caroling. Anyone is welcome to join the group.

The Sunday school classes of Cornell Baptist Church will give a Christmas Caroling planned BENSON (PNS)-A union advent caroling service will be at 2 p.m. Sunday at St. Peter Lutheran Church, west of Benson. The open event will include singing and fellowship. program at 7 p.m.

Dec. 23 at the church. Recitations, caroling and choir numbers will be under the direction of Mrs. Forrest Burkitt. Refreshments and fellowship will follow the program.

A four-act play, "Why will be at 7 p.m. Dec. 22 at Cornell United Methodist Church. The story is about an old man puzzled about Christianity and the purpose of Christmas. He tries to find answers from various families.

Vocalist will be Richard Leonard. The play is being directed by Mrs. Edward Schwartz and Mrs. John McClimans. Refreshments will be served after the program.

The Christmas Eve celebration, "Good News for All People," will be at 6 p.m. at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Rowe, which is near Cornell. A candlelight service, numbers by the junior and senior choirs, carols, hymns and prayers will be featured. B.
