DO-IT-YOURSELF - - Spot Checks You Can Make To Keep Auto in A»l Shape By MR, FIX, Newspaper Enterprise Assn. Today's modern autos need less service. Sell •adjusting brakes, self lubrication and fewer oil changes present fewer opportunities for a trained mechanic to spot trouble before it starts. Get in the habit, however, of having brake linings inspected when you have your car in for other servicing. While regular inspection by a professional is important, there are also items which you can check yourself and which you should check often. Lift the hood occasionally and Check the condition of the fan belt. A loose belt means faulty generation operation and inefficient cooling. There should be play of half-an-inch but be sure to read your operator's guide for complete instructions. Make certain that belt is not frayed or showing signs of breaking. Check the radiator. Water that is rusty or coated with scum should be flushed out and replaced. An accumulation of dirt can cause overheating. The air passages in the radiator core should be kept clean. Chances are the passages are covered with leaves, dead bugs and dirt, unless radiator has been cleaned recently. When you wash the car, direct a stream of water through the radiator core from .insideS if possible, so that the water and dirt that come out are .not sprayed over the engine. Do not overfill radiator, battery or gas tank in hot weather. An overflowing radiator adds to the loss brought on by evaporation. Though water evaporates faster from a battery during hot weather, overfilling can also cause trouble. Spilling-over brings on loss of the electrolyte and causes HELP AVOID VAPOR LOCK AND ENGINE DAMAGE IDLE CAR A LITTLE AFTER A LONG DRIVE; IT DRAWS OFF SOME HEAT. EXCESS WAX ON YOUR FLOORS? If you've ever parked your ear in the hot sun after getting the tank filled, you've probably come back to find gasoline on the pavement. Fill the tank while you still have some driving ahead of you so that you can lower the level of the fuel without waste. When you check tire pressure, dp it while the tires are cool. If you've been driving, let the car stand a few hours. Heat builds up pressure inside tires. Resist the temptation to bleed some of the air out when tires are hot. Better stop and let them cool off, then check the pressure. Releasing air while tires are hot may leave them dangerously un- derinflated when they cool. After a long, hot drive, give your engine a chance to cool off by idling it a little before turning it off. This draws off some of the heat, and helps prevent vapor lock and damage to engine parts. Sweating Water Closet Dried Up If a sweating water closet tank is a problem at your house during the summer months, says the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Information Bureau, there is a simple solution. Any reliable plumbing contractor can install a mixing valve that will warm the water entering the tank so that it will approximate room temperature. This eliminates condensation which occurs when warm air contacts the surface of the tank containing colder water. Designer, muralist James Seeman has developed new techniques of reproduction in his wallpaper studios to capture the Vitality of paintings that Illustrate opera scenes. The murals are silk screened on vinyl or canvas. "This was not begun as a com* mercial venture, although the murals wrll be sold," he says. "The aim is to make this project the beginning of a permanent collection. We plan to add one or two a year until it Is complete." An opera lover himself, Seeman commissioned outstanding designers of theater 7 settings for these first murals. Three scenes from "La Boheme" have been designed by Lili de Nobili of Paris, famed designer of opera stage settings. The larger center panel depicts the Christmas Eve scene of the Cafe Momus and the vivid pageantry of scene, color and lighting — the setting sun, light from the cafe, in the store and reflected from candles. Miss De Nobili also painted "Rosenkavalier." "Cavalleria Rusticana," by the American designer of stage settings, Robert Davison, involves fishnets, schooner masts, quaint dwellings and villagers. Davison also has put the fiesta of "Carmen" to canvas Two ballets wrll be included in the series. Seeman plans to do one of his favorite ballets, "Swan Lake." The other ballet, "La Belle Helene," was completed by the French painter, Marcel Vertes, just before his death. "But the probabilities are that we cannot use Vertes' scenes," Seeman explains. "The process of working witn an artist on a project of this sort goes on for a long time after the painting is finished. He must aid in relating the painting to the finished project. We do not know what we can do about this one." There was a time that good murals came only from France, he points out, but Americans now are Is Heart of Kitchen The heart of your kitchen plans should be the modern multi-purpose sink and this fixture should be selected with great care, says the Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Information Bureau. Kitchen sinks are available in durable porcelain on iron or steel and in lustrous stainless steel. Porcelain sinks are available in a wide variety of attractive colors. Ideally, you should have a large double-bowl sink that is set into a ceramrc tile or plastic-type counter, topped off with a modern single lever faucet for ultimate convenience. Delicate half - tones, shadings and color separation are planned for faithful reproductions of the original paintings.
