(AP)-Sklttles, one of the oldest games played by civilised man, is being revived in Florida. Official headquarters has been set up at the Youth Center here. And at least one other Florida city, Clearwater, is reviving the old English game, played by throwing wooden discs at pins. "I didn't even know skittles sets were available in this country until a few weeks ago," said Gary Garretson, director of Clearwater's Recreation Department, who played the game at the Officers Club in Calcutta nearly 20 years ago. Garretson learned that descendants of Englishmen who settled in the southern Appalachian Mountains are still carrying the solid walnut or blond wood, sectioned boxes with their carefully balanced spinners, and "men." Skittles was played in India her husband Frank of the Canton lodge were guests. The date for friends night was set for Oct. 11, and the date for election of officers is Nov. 8. and Penis centuries ago and was old when rich-robed manda* rins played for high stakes in the pleasure palaces of China 1,000 years ago. During the past century the term "skittles" was applied to the simpler form ot bowling a ball or disc iri English pubs, hence the expression "beer and skittles." The game is played With spinners, knaves, knights, hangman, dungeons, a castle and its royal occupants. At one time the hand- tooling necessary to make a set made it expensive, but modern tools and methods make skillful handcrafting easier and simpler. READ THE WANT ADSt Ptrtonol Problems?
