By Do Witt Morkrasie Tha German offensive against the Important Anglo-Greek ham of Crete beare the earmark! of being far deeper stretegy than shows on the mrface. Ostensibly the Naile are trying to open up a by-para which will permit them to more an army Into tha Near East without Interfering greatly with Turkey. Actually, I read the eigne, one of the pri mary objective! of thle daring adventure to forge another link la the military chain which the axla la throwing about that urn eaay country.

The purpoee of euch a acheme would be to cut the Turk! off from allied aid and thua compel them to allow the uee of their territory for the peerage of German troopa and equipment direct from the Balkane to tbelr baae of operation! In the Near Eaat agalnet the Brltleh. Reporta from Vichy Indicate that this may have been achieved in part already. Aa a matter of fact, Turkey la the moat feaalble route for the movement of a German army Into thin theater. It la true that poa-aeaeton of Crete would vaatly facilitate the tranaportation of troopa by air and would provide a powerful baae for bombing opera tlons. But when you talk of mov lng a a large expedition, the by' paaa Idea prraenta obstacle which would atagger even the Ingenuity of the exceedingly efficient German high command.

A Bar There la email doubt that the Naxla would have a great mechan lied force In the Near Eaat already had It not been for the stub-bom refusal of the Turks to aban- don their neutrality and allow their country to be used aa a highway. Hitler might have forced a passage with arms, but the Turks are strong enough so that ho didn't want to fight them at thla A Juncture. So he Inaugurated his by-pasa project and bided hla time for a better break. Now, according to diplomats at Vichy, German equipment la crossing Turkey by rail to Iraq aa result of a Hitler threat to close Turkeys rail link with the Persian gulf through Iraq. With war eloae at hand In the eastern Mediterranean, that railway had become a principal route for Turkish Imports.

Thera baa been no word of a ran e-Turkey movement of Nail troopa. While possession of Crete would give the Germans an Invaluable beae for bombing operations In all directions. Including Egypt and the Suea Canal, It wouldnt open up a sea route for movement of their troopa to Syria. Between Crete and the Syrian coaat lies tbe great Island of Cyprus which la one of Britains most powerful naval and air bases. Cyprus would have to be knocked out, and even then the British naval baae at Alexandria would still control the Slay Tighten Net Hitler presumably will pursue the course of least resistance, but one would expeet him In the Immediate future to rush troops and equipment by air to Iraq and to French-mandated Syria If tha French will permit it so to elosa hla chain further about Turkey.
