Bob Wisehart Television Theodore Roosevelt minute speech after being hit jui the chest by a bullet from would-be assassin later took qn a dangerous trip down an uncharted river in Brazil at age 55 because It was my last chance be a boy" By the time he died at 60 as Scott says he had lived ffl than a toothy smile a mustache and the "Bulfyr cry It's almost shocking to realize now many of Roosevelt's causes still need defending women's rights and conservation among them He was a mass of contradictions Best known for his foreign' policy of "walk softly but carry a big stick" he also was the first American to win a Nobel Prize for bringing a negotiated end to the war between Japan and Russia The Rough Rider slayer of beasts and bringer of peace struggled like any father with his own colorful family Of his daughter Alice decades ahead of her time he once said that he could either be president or he could control Alice but he "could not possibly do both" He had style rambunctious sprawling and brawling and substance too He wrote 28 books (none ghostwritten) including a biography of Oliver Cromwell he somehow-found time for during his idle moments as governor of New York A hunter who practically reveled in his bloodlust he once shot 296 major specimens during a yearlong safari including a rhino "at 13 paces" he once refused to shoot a bear on a hunt And thus according to legend the Teddy bear was born Roosevelt lived the kind of life that beggars the imagination of even the most creative scriptwriter There was even the great tragedy that burns and changes a man's soul like a blacksmith's fire his mother and his first wife died on the same day The former Ivy League swell took his glasses high-pitched voice and broad accent out West And there he made himself a man But Roosevelt never lost the boy that was in him The same middle-aged man who had the courage stamina and iron self-control to go ahead with a 90- McClatchy News Service When Theodore Roosevelt died it was said that death had to "take him steeping or there would have been fight" 'Although he's been dead1 for almost 70 years the man's invin-dble vitality bulldog spirit' and robust self-confidence crackle with life once again in "The Indomitable Teddy Roosevelt" Sunday at 7 pm on ABC Roosevelt doesnt just put in an appearance The 26th president never was the sort of man who would just show up Thanks to the painstaking restoration of old newsreel footage that practically had turned to dust and a new technique that converted die axtr dent 1 6-frames-per-second pro-' jectkm speed of that footage into tape's 30-frames-per-second Roosevelt's vibrant drive is so crisp and immediate it's as if he wandered off yesterday and is expected back any minute "The Indomitable Teddy Roosevelt" may be the best documentary I've ever seen Dont let the word "documentary" deflate your interest Narrated by George Scott and scored by the brassy martial music of John Philip Sou-sa it is to run-of-the-mill television documentaries what a redwood is to crabgrass It's history with heart personality and punch Film-maker Harrison Engle responsible for most of the film tributes in the Oscar and American Film Institute telecasts devoted four years of his life to the documentary without any reasonable hope that it would be seen beyond a handful of people because the networks have a pol- icy of not accepting documentaries from outside production entities But this one was so extraordinary that ABC News finally relented with good reason Engle's work is worthy of its subject and dozen lives ai teasi It's one of the sadder com- ments on American television that no mean feat The word "charisma" has been inflated until it applies to anybody we vaguely remember five minutes after he or she left By contrast Roosevelt didn't need media advisers to coach him on sincerity or on how to project the proper image He simply projected himself The only problem with "The Indomitable Teddy Roosevelt" is that it makes most of today's holders of high office seem so awfully domitable Engle combined the exquisitely restored footage with still photographs oil paintings political cartoons museum and personal artifacts and finally live action The latter is I think a mistake It's certainly a distraction Just about any actor would suffer by comparison compared to the real thing Roosevelt came to the presidency in 1901 following the assassination of William McKinley only six months into his term Ironically Roosevelt had been maneuvered into the vice presidency as a means of getting him out of the way After only a few months in office Roosevelt had become "the most entertaining man in America" Scott says and it's hard to disagree Roosevelt himself probably would have enjoyed the praise But there was more to the man (4) JIM AND TAMMY CDENTERTAINMENT THIS WEEK (EXaDCBSNEWS OAUCTtON CDABCNEWS CCUFESTYLESOFTHE RICH AND FAMOUS CDKQED 1986 AUCTION CDTHIRTY MINUTES MARKET TO MARKET
