Organization Officers of Gothenburg Post 64 American Legion received a message from American Legion staffe headquarters that as soon as hos- tilities of war cease for keeps every man and woman on active duty at that time in the Army Navy Marine Corps or Coast Guard immediately become eligible to membership in the American Legion even though they have not been discharged or otherwise separated from the service The following is the text of the message from National Commander Edward Scheiberling to Department Headquarters in Lincoln on August 11 1945 which read in part: called to provisions of national charter national constitution and executive committee Nov 1944 wherein persons remaining in armed forces after cessation of hostilities as fixed by Government immediately become eligible to membership in American Legion prior to discharge or separation from service contents of this telegram approved by National Judge Memberships in the American Legion for men and women in service will begin as soon as the peace terms are signed and the war is actually over Parents wives or relatives can pay the dues and give the information necessary to have on the application blank to bfficers of the organization and they can then send the person who the application was made for a paid up card This will extend to the new member all courtesies of Legion posts everywhere Since this word has been received several wives and parents have stated they want a membership card for some service man just as soon as it is possible to pass them out Memberships can be taken from the men and women in service ONLY if they were on active duty in the Army Navy Marine Corps or Coast Gua'rd ON OR BEFORE THE DATE FOR CESSATION OF HOSTILITIES Those inducted into service AFTER the date of V-J will not be eligible to the Legion as their service would not be in actual war period Service MUST be between Dec 7 1941 and the date on which hostilities officially cease by proclamation of the United States Government both dates inclusive Active service is required Those with orily reserve status will not be eligible as they were never on active service unless such is shown on their discharge or furlough to the reserve Men in the Merchant Marine are NOT eligible to join the American Legion The Merchant Marine is not a part of the armed forces of the United States but is a civilian non-military organization There are a very few exceptions to this rule where men actually in the Navy have been detailed for special service in the Merchant Marine No one seeking membership in the American Legion who is still in the service can be signed up until the peace has been definitely signed and the official announcement is given The American Legion a non-sectarian non-political organization is the greatest service force to veterans and families in the United States It has sponsored the legislation which has and will make the lot of the veteran easier when peace is declared and he or she returns to civilian life Other veteran organizations have their place in civilian life but by far the largest and most powerful will be the Legion It has been and will be the guiding light to all needs at all them landed in Nebraska can now be told The purpose of the balloons has not been definitely disclosed but Maj Charles Frierson intelligence officer of the Nebraska and South Dakota area whose men were required to track down every report of a balloon bomb said he believed the ones which reached Nebraska were aiming bombs Maj Frierson said he did not believe the small 80 pound bomb load carried by the balloon would justify the trouble of building them but added that the Japanese hoped to stir up enough publicity so they could judge their effectiveness and later arm them with something more destructive Nebraska editors have long known of some of the seven Jap balloon bombs which fell at Bur-well Schuyler Hyannis Chadron Osceola Silver Creek and Omaha but the facts they knew were kept out of the papers in compliance with the voluntary censorship code After the word first spread that the Japanese were using balloons to carry explosives the public began seeing balloons' in every cloud
