I see by the paper Howard Sturgeon was home That is fine He sure deserves a rest I wish we all were home or headed that way Some of these days we will be Well time and space limits this so I will sign off Keep the old paper coming this way T-5 Leslie Cochrane 37256265 APO 90 New York Soldier Voting Is Explained By Bernard Smith Co Attorney Two Methods May Be Used But Postcard Request Is The Desired Manner Time Is Element In answer to many requests for such information County Attorney Bernard Smith explained to the Lexington Clipper the two methods by which Service people in this country and overseas as well as other absent voters may obtain ballots to vote in the "November election The easiest method for Service people is to use the new ballot application postcards which are being distributed to all service men by the military authorities These postcards are to be filled out by soldiers who wish to vote and are mailed to the secretary of state at Lincoln In the case of Dawson county Service people who send such cards the secretary mails them upon receipt to County Clerk Grim who then sees that ballots are mailed to the soldier as soon as they are ready which will be on September 2Sth Civilian absent voters or Service people who do not use the postcard method may obtain ballots by writing directly to the county office giving name home address and address to which the ballot should be sent County Clerk Grim will begin handling requests for ballots on August 9th under the law Applications for ballots may be accepted not more than 90 days nor less than two clear days before the general election which comes on November 7th new law requires that absent voter ballots are to be ready 40 days before election and they will be mailed to applicants as soon as they are ready Ballots must be marked and mailed by the voter not later than midnight the day before election and must be in the hands of the county Clerk by 10 am November 30th which is 23 days after the election to be counted They are scheduled to travel by air mail in special envelopes provided by the state Dawson county Service people who expect to vote should apply for ballots at once preferably thru military channels by the postcard method outlined above Red Cross Report Red Cross report for July: Gauze folded 9989 number of workers 52 number of hours spent in work 534 number of new members 4: Mrs Margaret Stiff Mrs Fred Anderson Mrs Anna Joneson Mrs Phyllis Hecox Memorial Services Sunday Afternoon For Lt Raymond Estle I American Legion To Participate In Services At Christ Lutheran Church Sunday At 3 Memorial services honoring the memory of Lt Raymond Estle will be held Sunday afternoon at three at Christ Lutheran church Rev Ihrig pastor of the church will conduct the services and Gothenburg Post 64 American Legion will participate Lt Estle son of Mr and Mrs Harry Estle lost his life in Russia while on a mission from his bomber base in England He and his co-pilot were the first Americans buried in a new cemetery established by the Russians near the landing field at which he was killed TO CLOSE DURING FUNERAL Our store will close at 12 noon today Thursday and will remain closed the- balance of the day Super Market Eighth Annual Reunion The Slack-Ireland eighth annual reunion was held at Harmon field park at Kearney Sunday Aug 6 with 53 relatives and friends present A basket dinner was enjoyed at noon and the afternoon was spent in social diversion Everyone enjoyed the beautiful park with its colorful rock gardens etc while the children enjoyed the play ground and swimming pools Those present from this vicinity were: Mr and Mrs Leslie Owings and family Mr and Mrs Clarence Rasmussen and Bernadine and Alf Slack of Gothenburg Mr and Mrs Wm Slack John and Marilyn of Maxwell and Miss Betty Grunden of Curtis Central City Aurora Arapahoe Grand Island Hastings Holdrege Kearney and Sawyer Kansas were also represented ea LAFAYETTE PARK NOTICE! Flies Home For Visit Lt Arnall who is stationed as an instructor with the Army Air -Perrin Field Texas flew to Kearney on Saturday and was met at the Air Base there by his parents He spent the day here and returned to Texas on Sunday Wilbert Zorn new coach of the Gothenburg Swedes came last week and is getting ready for the coming school year If you want to Buy or Sell City Property see Duis Co 6-3t To Compile Record Of All Polio Victims In Dawson County Will Be Of Great Assistance In Future And Will Help Toward National Summarization Dawson county chapter National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis is compiling a record of all infantile paralysis victims now residing in this area Intended mainly to serve as a guide to expand the services of this chapter this report ill also be included in the nationwide survey undertaken by the National Foundation to further its pledge of assuring aid to all polio victims regardless of age race creed or color Emil Barta of Cozad chairman of the Dawson county chapter states that members of its Division headed by Mrs Grace Barmore of Lexington will assist in compiling this record From such information many unusual needs have been found to exist Handicapped polio victims were found to be in need of wheel chairs crutches and orthopedic appliances as well as medical and surgical care Others needed help in arranging for transportation to and from hospitals and clinics or schools and places of employment The Dawson county chapter always stands ready to assist in all these ways backed by the funds contributed each year through the March of Dimes The chapter retains 50 of all monies collected to carry on this service the other half going to the national headquarters Anyone now residing in Dawson county who has had infantile paralysis or whose children have been stricken can assist greatly in this survey by notifying their chapter chairman Mr Barta or Mrs Bar-more This nation-wide survey will very largely broaden the program of services available to all infantile paralysis victims regardless of whether the individual was stricken before this organization came into being or since It will enable local chapters to work with state and county organizations and will be the first complete register of infantile paralysis throughout the United States a record of incalculable value to medical science OLIVER SPENCER Oliver Spencer father of Mrs Ulfert Block of this city passed away Saturday morning August 5 1944 at the home of his son Dallas in Bremerton Washington Services were held there Wednesday morning and the remains will be returned here for burial either Saturday or Sunday Expert Infantryman's Badge Sgt Arthur Duerschner passed thru Gothenburg on July 26th on a troop train when his division was moved to Ft Leonard Wood Mo according to a letter received by his parents Rev and Mrs Duerschner At special ceremonies on the first anniversary of the 70th Division Sgt Duerschner was one of 319 in his division to be awarded the Expert Badge after having passed the rigid tests prescribed by the Army 1E3 Capt and Mrs Arch Trimble I came on Monday morning from Brownwood Texas where he is stationed to spend a 15-day leave with their parents Mr and Mrs A Trimble and Mr and Mrs A Lloyd Anderson take my word for it ask the folks who take them! this area would soon deplete the supply By artificial propagation in ponds hatcherymen will have a constant supply without disturbing the rivers This new land acquired by the Commission when fully one of the finest in the middlewest is Cpl Orval Ostendorf Wounded In Invasion Fight Cpl Orval Ostendorf son of Mr and Mrs Ostendorf was wounded in action Somewhere in France during the invasion and is now in a hospital in England Word was received from the War Department last week Cpl Ostendorf was awarded the Purple Heart Medal on July 25th and word from him is that he is along pa Receives Good Conduct Medal Pfc Ernest VanWey son of Mr and Mrs Glen VanWey of Gothenburg has recently been awarded the Good Conduct Medal according to word from headquarters of the Americal Division in the Southwest Pfc VanWey has been in the Southwest Pacific area for ten months and became attached to the Americal Division while it was on the Fijo Islands Graduates As Flight Officer Ivan Oman son of Mr and Mrs Frank Oman of Denver was graduated last week as Flight Officer in the Army Air Forces in the Aviation Cadet class at Foster Field Texas He received his silver wings after intensive advanced pursuit pilot training Blessing To Play Pro Football Coach and Mrs Paul Blessing were week-end visitors of Rev and Mrs Glenn Porter Mr Blessing leaves in two weeks for Detroit Mich to begin training the War Department He was wounded in action on July 15 in Italy receiving shrapnel wounds in his legs S3 Carol Waters Of Cozad Heads Group For Irrigation i Valley From Kearney West To Ogallala To Be Served -By New Development Association Carol Waters of Cozad has been elected president of the Greater Platte Valley Irrigation Development Association at a recent meeting of the directors in North Platte Russell Anderson of Ogallala was elected vice-president and Paul Thompson of North Platte as treasurer This association is the result of a move to promote irrigation development in the Platte Valley following the hearing in North Platte last March before the Water Diversion Committee of the Legislative Council of which Petrus Peterson of Lincoln is chairman The association intends to promote and encourage the maximum development of the irrigation of lands in the Platte Valley and any additional lands within the Platte River Watershed that could be irrigated from the waters of the Platte Rivers with special attention to lands in the counties of Keith Lincoln Dawson and Buffalo west of Kearney They expect to promote voluntary collections of monies to make surveys and investigations of all possibilities of improvement in the use of irrigation waters and to promote co-operative action among all interested groups in all matters pertaining to the use of irrigation water in the Platte River Basin They also expect to keep the public informed of any legislation that has any relation to irrigation in the Platte Valley Directors selected to date who have expressed We have plenty of Ice Cream Get your Ice Cream at McVick- 2tf Iceland July 31st Dear Don and Rus: Just a line to let you know that I am still receiving The Times and enjerv reading it However having had the' same address for better than a year the army decided I needed a change However am still in Iceland just a few more rocks and a bit more wind at this post The weather for the past month has been fine vacation weather if one is anxious to get away from the heat August should be all right also but suppose it will be pretty wet Thanks for keeping the paper coming Yours truly Sgt James Bedell 37469380 APO 610 New York Second Son Of Dean Booker Callaway Killed In Action Pfc Glenn Booker eldest son of Mr and Mrs Dean Booker of Callaway was killed in action on Saipan on June 25th according to word received Sunday from the War Department This is the second son of Mr and Mrs Booker who has given his life for his country in the present conflict Robert Booker having been killed in action in the ISforth African theatre of war on April 9 1943 The boys were nephews of Ivan Klinkman of Gothenburg 134th Infantry Doing Goqji Job According to word from the invasion front in France the 134th Infantry composed of Nebraska national guardsmen has been doing a wonderful job in their sector and when the full story of the capture of St Lo can be told it will show instances of personal and group heroism of the highest order The 134th has been issued an order of commendation Rich Poggendorf Wounded Pfc Richard Poggendorf was wounded in action in France on the 18th of July according to word received from the War Department by his mother Mrs Grace Poggen-doff Later word from Richard himself was that he received a wound on his thumb and was back on active duty te To Texas For Reassignment Pvt Fred Portiner who was home on furlough following his return from duty in the South Pacific left Thursday night for Fort Sam Houston Texas for reassignment Miss Charlotte Homer who has been attending school in Kearney came Friday night to be with her parents Mr and Mrs Roy Homer until September when she enters nurses training in Omaha Fresh Peach Ice Cream during the month of August Rhoda Ann Jensen Community Saddened By Untimely Passing Of Youngster Rhoda Ann Jensen daughter of Mr and Mrs Burton Jensen passed away Monday morning at 9:30 August 7th 1944 after a lingering ailment at the age of 10 years 8 months and 5 days Funeral services will be at the Oiesen Mortuary Thursday afternoon at two Lloyd Harvey Of Ogallala Is Killed In Action France Pfc Lloyd Harvey son of Dr and Mrs A Harvey Ogallala was killed in action near St Lo in France July 15th the war department has notified his parents Pfc Harvey was attached to the 134th infantry as a machine gunner He was a 1933 graduate of Ogallala high school and attended Hastings college Besides his parents he is survived by his wife and baby daughter and two brothers Pfc Harvey was a nephew of Dr Harvey of Gothenburg Entertains Bomber Crew Lt Paul Ristine pilot of a B-17 Flying Fortress stationed at Kearney air base brought his bomber crew to Gothenburg Friday evening for dinner at the home of his parents Cecil Ristines Nine of the boys and one of the wdfe were present and the entertainment also included pictures by Krekeler Mr and Mrs Walter Trimble and Mr and Mrs Robert Hecox were also guests The crew expected to start overseas with their big ship on Tuesday Open Door Club Picnic The Open Door Club will hold their annual picriic next Sunday i evening Aug 13 at Lafayette iPark with supper at 7 and social hour following Mr and Mrs Dan Kinyon and Miss Dorothy Lee went to Fort Smith Arkansas last week to bring back their daughter Mrs Mathieu and her son Lewis as her husband Capt Mathieu has had overseas orders Goodyear Endless Drive Belts and cut belts of all widths at the Gothenburg Motor 51-tf.
