In a a a 99 in Friday, March 30, 1962 THE MODESTO BEE USDA Slashes Dairy Product Price Supports WASHINGTON A Secretary of Agriculture Orville L. Freeman cut dairy price supports today to the minimum level permitted by law. This could mean price cuts for consumers of dairy products but losses for dairymen. Acting under what he said was a requirement of the farm price support program, the secretary set supports for milk sold for manufacturing purposes at $3.11 a hundred, pounds or 75 per cent of the parity price goal of farm programs, effective April 1st. The rate has been $3.40 or 83 per cent of parity.

Calls Action Painful Freeman also reduced supports for butterfat from 60.4 cents to 57.2 cents a pound. or from 83 to 75 per cent of parity. The secretary, saying his action was painful to estimated the lower price props would cut dairy farmers' income between $200 and $250 million this year. Freeman said he hopes that these reductions will be reflected in lower retail prices of dairy products such as butter, cheese, non fat dry milk and eventually fluid milk. Baird, currently a teaching principal at the Hickman Elementary School, has been appointed curriculum consultant for the Stanislaus Union Elementary School District effective September 1st. Baird, who received the appointment Wednesday night, will have as his primary responsibility the upgrading of the curriculum for both schools in the district.

Superintendent George W. Eisenhut said Baird's starting salary will be $7,500. Baird has completed work toward his doctorate at the University of California and expects to receive the degree in June. Modesto Television Channel Is Changed Television Channel 14, which had been assigned to Modesto, has been moved to San Mateo for non commercial education use, effective May 7th.

The federal communication commission today announced the transfer but at the same time said Modesto will be asigned Channel 17. so there will be no loss. Two channels have been assigned to Modesto, 17 and 46. both in the ultra high frequency, range. There have been no announced plans for either station to be opened in the near future although KTRB had applied for one of the channels.
