Story on Cancer Wins Award NEW YORK (UPI) - The Deadline Club, New York's chapter of Ai#nta Delta Chi, the professional Journalism society, Wednesday awarded its science writing tmH ito Delos Smith of United Tfeas International for his story "My Fight Against Cancer. The award was accepted by Smith's wife. Smith has been hospitalized for several weeks after a heart selwirfc. Other awards: — Jatnes Wright Brown Award for newspaper and wire service stories in the field of public service: David K. Shinier-, New York fifties, for his article on corruption in the construction industry. —United Nations Award for reporting on the world organization: Robert Alden, the New York Times. —Television Public Service Award foe public service telecasts: Selwyn Raab, WNET, for "The Whitmore Stofy." — Radio Public Service awards for public service broadcast: Paul Parker, WINS. Thursday, May 24, If 73 f Hobo Gets Decent Burial-60 Years Late DALLAS (UPI) - In 1913, a one4eg«ed hobo named Anderson McCrew was riding a freight train through Martin in central Texas. McGrew fell off the train, lost his other leg and died. His body was taken to a funeral home in Maflin. There the body was mummified to preserve until a relative could be found to claim him. No relative ever appeared. Sothehow the mummy of Anderson McOrew became part of a carnival show. Dressed in a tuxedo,, it was taken across the country and billed as the "petrified man" and "the eighth wonder of the world." When the carnival began losing money, it sold some of its possessions including the mummy. A relative of Elgle Pace, a licensed vocational nurse in Dallas, bought the mummy. The awards, to be presented at a luncheon today, were announced by Elie Abel, dean Of the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism. The awards were: General ex;ceyence—Business Week, for "consistently high level of performance as business news magazine." Specialized journalism —Psychology Today, for "imaginative and skillful interpretation of a complex field to a general audience." Visual excellence — Horizon, for "consistently high level of the quality of its reproductions." Fiction—Atlantic Monthly, for "Enormous Changes at the Last Minute," a short story by Grace Paley. and has kept it in her basement. Mrs. Pace, who called the mummy Sam, was in Maflin recently and learned about Anderson McCrew, although she could not find out how the mummy became part of the carnival. Mrs. Pace decided that Anderson McCrew deserved a proper burial, 60 years after his death, and Framk Lott, a mortuary owner, said he would pay for it. Services will be Saturday at 2:30 p.m. Anderson McCreW will be buried in a plain black suit because Lott could not find a tuxedo like those worn in 1913.
