LAW BINDING LIBRARY BINDING BLANK BOOK BINDING DOCTOR HECTOR ALEY Omaha Herald: Nebraska has reason to be doubly proud Ita school teacher heroines give primary cause and the generous response to an appeal in the behalf of these brave young women would be creditable to an older and richer state At first Miss Freeman stood alone and the proposi tion was to present to her some lasting memorial Then as returns come in Miss Royce divided the praise ana later when the storm had subsided and Miss Shattuck had bneu discover ed the congratulation aud the syropa thy were for the trio The ase of Miss Shattuck reaches the heart most directly She is the ne who was crippled and rendered unfit for future labors For a time even her life was in the greatest dan ger and only by the amputation of both legs was it saved It is fitting that she should receive the largest sum for while whatever is tendered i lie others will be purely in the nature of a tribute a token of public regard and a compliment to courage what she will receive will be not only this but will represent the wages she would have earned In collecting these funds there has been no rivalry Offerings have come from strangers in the distance and from people in all stations of life The Bee has ceived a large sum and and one which is daily growing larger The Herald did no solici i but aunounced that it would care for whatever might be sent in and it will take pleasure in adding this and its own subscription to the fund now in the hands of the Bee That paper suggests that $6000 be raised for Miss Shattuck and no doubt such an amount will be raised Were the cir cumstances simply such as surround Misses Freeman and Royce any urg ing would be in bad taste and would rob the presentation of its real mean ing The fact that Miss Shattuck is a poor girl as well as a brave one and that she has been supporting her veteran father alter all this Let it be remembered that a fortune could not fully requite her and that in contribu ting every little counts Proclamation Whereas This city has become one of considerable magnitude and is every day greatly increasing in its population and Whereas due regard has never been paid to the sanitary coudition oi the city and Whereas the great thoroughfares that pass through this city bring in its limits and through its center many people direct from infected and diseased Ioealitits and Whereas The country at large is suffering in many and different localities with infectious and contagious diseases it is therefore the duty of your Mayor to call the attention of all people both owners and renters of prop-erty in our city to the great need of a thorough system of sanitary precautions To do this it will be necessary for each and every one to at ome commence to clean all yards and alleys of filth all kinds and strictly aDd absolutely iu future to abstain from emptying slop or depositing garbage in the streets yards and alleys in said city I desire to say now that no one will be beard in defense for violating the ordinance in this respect for want of notification the enforcement of the ordinance is not only due to yourselves but for the protection of the lives and welfare of our city Platt Mayor City papers please copy Nebraska Zephyrs FROM THE BEE BELLOW'S Beemer people have substituted cobs for coal The expenses of Webster county for 1888 are estimated at afforded scope for many dramatic incidents and effective situa tions All religious coutroveisy eliminated aud the time and events an-merely used as a vehicle for the delineation of on" of the most love episodes a story that lives not only as an ideal historical event but forms the subject of oue of the most noted works of the famous artist Millas and known as Hugenot and the picture is realized iu the prologue of the play The play is replete with startling situations and exciting climaxes and each act is in itself strongly wrought picture full of action and moving incident It is a refresh ancestors who were celebrated artists aud was brought up in an excellent school and although the best of her dramatic work has been confined to long seasons in Boston and New York and occasional visits with the companies to other eitiesstill the excellence of her many successes has gained her the reputation with the criiics of the day of being without a rival as comedy actress on the American stage A long series of triumphs both in standard roles and original creations fully entitles her to the well earned stellar honors In BostoD ber home she has endeared herself to ail both on trie stage SHATTUCK DEAD Just as we go to press wo learn that Miss Bhattuck died this morning from the effect of her injuries If Miss Royce survives the amputa tion decided upon to-morrow it is likely the fund raised for Miss Shattuck will be turned over to her or at least a portion of it the remainder probably going to the disabled father who was dependent upon Miss Shattuck for support The Case of Miss Royce The saddest and most distressing Case appealing to the sympathy and philanthropy of the people of Nebraska is that of Miss Louise Royce of Plain-view Pierce county This young teacher it will be remembered accompanied by three of her pupils lost her way in the blizzard and passed the fearful night in a snow drift Her efforts to protect the little ones in her cari from the biting and freezing storm were unavailing and one after another the little forms became motionless In death The teacher herself badly frozen managed in the morning to get to a farm bouse and there announced the heartrending fact of the death of the children The whole pathetic story of that awful experience in the pitiless storm has been given in the Bee as related by Miss Royce It was among the most sorrowful incidents of the many that have been told as the result of the memorable blizzard Miss Royce has experienced severe suffering from her frozen limbs but it had been hoped until yesterday that they would be saved That hope however had to be abandoned A dispatch to the Bee from the physician attending Miss Royce states that she lose both of her feet and one of arms it having been decided to amputate them next Tuesday If she survives so terrible an ordeal Miss Royce will be utterly helpless Thus far subscriptions in her behalf have been made chiefly as a recogni-tionof her noble devotion Expecting her ultimate recovery the thought of the subscribers to the fund has been simply to generously honor her heroic faithfulness and fortitude The inexpressibly sad change iD her condition makes her case the strongest possible in its appeal to sympathy and philanthropy It must touch ail hearts who can feel for human suffering and misfortune It must convey to all in a language more pathetic than wards can frame a call to help with such aid as it is within human power to give this most unfortunate girl bereft of all power to hereafter help herself She did her duty heroically unselfishly aDd her sacrifice is great No reward can be beyond her merit Omaha Bee The Right Kind of Christianity The following letter from Senator Van Wyck to the Omaha Bee needs no comment: Nebraska City Neb Ian 29 Rosewater: A few days ago I com menced a letter enclosing donation for two teachers Miss Freeman and Mi-s Royce when I noticed that another teacher in Holt county Miss Shattuck has suffered almost to death and I waited further particulars I saw by Bee that you had opened a list for her You are entitled to the thanks not only of the unfortunate ones but the state generally for the interest you have manifested The heroes of that fearful storm can never be forgotten and many homes will long be desolate The heroism will form a portion of that history which enobles humanity tender delicate girls just budding into womanhood calm bravie in the shock of the blinding frost and snow with death and Deity before them yet manifesting intrepidity coolness resources and un-selfishness worthy the bravest soldier In the storm of battle I enclose $50 Please assign $25 to Miss Shattuck as she is disabled for life and her lot is a particularly hard one Her father Whose support she was was a VeteraD of the late war Divide the remiiniDg 25 dollars equally between Miss Royce and Miss Freeman Continue the good Work if they have suffered provision should also be made for them and if citizens do not place them beyond want the next legislature should makesuita-able appropriation Van Wyck The four new trains on the come in to-day The site for the insane hospital near Hastings has been selected Now is the time for the people of this city to help move Grand Island further to the front Grand Island will in a few days forward her third list to the Shattuck fund to the Omaha Bee In the way of passenger train facilities there Is not now a city in the state of Nebraska ahead of Grand Island The Grand Island schools have thus far contributed $100 to the 8hattuck fund swelling Grand contribution to about $400 The present arrangement of trains on tlie UDion Pacific is admirable for Grand Island and a great accommodation for neighboring towns The local passenger traffic on the WU no doubt be largely increased fry the four new local trains and the tbmeirb trains will be relieved of mnch local work which frequently caused them to be off time BMm aid Binding of 4 7 Ti Bring in
