financial aid would be more appreciated than expressions of sympathy from American labor organizations Another Whitechapel murder occurred in London yesterday the body of the woman being terribly mutilated No clue to the identity of the fiend who did the devilish deed A Kragel a patient at the Independence Iowa insane hospital suicided Monday by escaping from the institution and throwing himself upon the track in front of a railroad train A terrible storm has been raging on the Atlantic for two or three days the worst known for many years and the loss of life and destruction of property have no doubt been great though particulars are not known yet Governor Thayer has not lost his head in the matter of the election in the Second congressional district if some other people have lost theirs There is no earthly call for a call for a special election in the said district and no such call will likely be issued At Akron Ohio Isaiah Slade was almost torn to pieces yesterday by a gorilla The gorilla was in a cage in his barn and when he entered the barn it having by some means escaped from the cage sprang upon him and he narrowly escaped with his life losing one eye and most of his nose The recovery of Slade is thought possible At Ohiowa Nebraska Monday night Ed Taylor was stripped and-treated to a coat of tar and feathers by a mob of fourteen of his old neighbors About a year ago he eloped with his hired girl leaving his family ia destitute circumstances and returning a few days ago the neighbors concluded to give him a reception that would stick tighter than a hired girl The Lincoln Call is carrying its warfare upon Governor Thayer beyond the bounds of decency and thus losing the respect of all fairminded people whether Governor special friends or not It is plainly a personal matter with the Call and shows that the paper cares more to vent personal spleen than it does to serve the public In some respects the Call is a good paper but when it comes to dealing with a personal enemy it i3 both childish and dishonest Father Sentenne of Notre Dame Montreal has issued a pastorate denouncing the Knights of Labor as an ungodly organization and Labor Day will be well attended and an affair of the greatest commercial importance It will not result in any treaties among these states as the del ates are not authorized for any such arrangements But the discussion of the means by which the welfare and the commercial intercourse among the different countries of America can be favored will bring about a clearer understanding of their mutual interests in exchanging their products and a deeper insight into the enterprises and new laws necessary for the development of that desirable intercourse among the three Americas When this is completely understood the action undoubtedly will follow The delegates will be shown around through our country to make them acquainted by actual Inspection with our great industrial establishment our agricultural interests and commercial facilities and then in the discussion at Washington the great subjects of American inter-state commerce and its necessary institutions will be treated In regard to this matter Secretary of State Blaine has sent a letter to the Board of Trade and Transportation of New York asking for suggestions as to the important commercial and industrial questions to be considered by the international congress And as such the board has designated: An American customs union uniform money and weights and measures and especially regular and frequent communication between the different ports To these probably will be added a number of other important subjects as the dieision of international difficulties between American states by arbitration the regulation of duties until a custom union can be formed legal protection of trade marks etc It is easy to comprehend the great influence which this eongress will have on the destiny of all American countries and it is well understood by all sensible men not only in America but in Europe also The Europeans of course do not look favorably on thiscongress because they justly expect "that its results may be unfavorable to their commercial interests Numerous clippings from foreign newspapers sent in by United States consuls show that they consider the congress as a well directed effort to divert trade from Europe and as a general menace to European industries But just this foreign hostility to the congress proves the great importance it has for the development of all our agricultural industrial and commercial interests and the necessity of its work We shall discuss all these matters in connection with the reports of the pro ceediugs of the congress as soon as it has assembled Hastings gets the republican state convention As an inducementwhisky was reduced to 10 cents a drink and beer six schooners for a quarter Beatrice Democrat This reduction was prompted by the enormous business done in that line when the democratic state convention was held there but we venture the prediction that the saloonkeepers will find to their sorrow that they have measured the republican gathering by an entirely unfair standardone average democrat being about an equivalent for a dozen average republicans when it comes to guzzliDg liquor or stuffing ballot boxes The Perfection Of the age in the
