"I guess this is my best start since I had an 18 2 record for the Alpine (Tex.) Cowboys in 1958," he said, recalling his semipro days. "The excitement of getting off to a good start wore off when I reached 5 0 but it's still mighty good to stay unbeaten." May's monster, the other drivers found that following it was like dodging Nike missiles. Now Granatelli is a big wheel in Studebaker Corp. and regarded as a great in novater for his efforts with the turbine car. The former "Italian Racing Champion" plans to build 10 to 20 more of the silent speedsters this year. Al Sweeney can't complain either.

Speed is his business too, and he predicts the turbine car will be a fixture on his own IMCA circuit in the near Sports Slate By DON FORSYTHE Doniphan It was veterans day, specifically Bue ford Bailey day, as the 89th annual Nebraska State trap shoot opened Thursday but there was indication that the younger set belonged, too. Bailey, shooting better the longer he stood on the firing line, shared the ton spot in the Directors Shoot with Bill Johnson of Hol drege and followed up with a nerfect 50 rnrk tnllv in the Open Doubles. Ti 11 1 an served as a warning to the other competitors that Bailey, the Big Springs rancher who has claimed all America honors many times is again the man to beat in any event in the four day meet. Bailey broke only 98 of 100 targets from 16 yards in the Directors Shoot, then cracked 97 from his handicap distance of 27 yards to match Johnson, author of a 99 96 count, at 195. His doubles pace was even better, his 50 being the first perfect score in the event in the last 10 years.

"They were just going where I was shooting," he quipped after his fine opening day performance. The younger generation, headed by Omahans Jim Columbo and Mike Turner and North Platte's Steve Beerman, also fared well. Columbo and Turner each Turbine Racing Sprouted at Nebraska's Offutt 88x100 round Thursday morning. 'That's my best," he smiled. "Dad (Francis) really isn't too interested in this, my uncle (Adolph Butt) got me started," notes Kevin.

He's been shooting for about a year. Unless he changes his mind in the next couple of years, he'll be spending a lot of his time trapshooting. "I'm not very good at football or basketball. I do like to pole vault, though," the fifth grader pointed out. If he continues to nro "It was at Offutt Air Force Base about 20 years ago," Sweeney recalls.

"General LeMay and some of his officers, who were real nuts on sports cars, came up with a crude idea of a turbine car." Crude is the word because, if the car was fast, it was veritable smog on wheels sort of a four wheeled Los Angeles. "It threw out so much smoke and flame it was impossible for any other car to run behind it," Al explains. Sweeney doesn't know if Andy Granatelli, the man Now that the turbine car is the fastest thing in racing since the female residents of Dogpateh on Sadie Hawkins Day, it should be pointed out the controversial "airplane on wheels" had an early prototype in Nebraska. This tidbit of racing folklore comes from the lips of no less an authority than ubiquitous Al Sweeney, long time president of National Speedways Inc.
