Shoplift Trial Ends Friday In H. Jury A Municipal Court jury deliberated more than six hours Friday in the shoplifting trial of Betty Ann Watkins, 25, of 1737 Rice and was then released shortly after 5 p.m. when Judge Roger D. Andrews declared a hung jury. City prosecutor Ken Hardesty immediately moved the case be retried at later date.

Mrs. Watkins was charged with stealing $6.04 worth of merchandise on June 13 from Rink's Bargain Center. The trial began Thursday. Jurors said three votes were taken beginning at 8:45 p.m. Thursday when they went into deliberation and each vote favored acquittal.

Votes began at 9-3 and concluded at 11-1 for dismissing the charges. However all 12 jurors must -agree on any verdict thereby averting an acquittal. A male was the lone holdout for conviction on the five men and seven women jury. Jurors said Mrs. Watkins' contention that she left the store to look at peat moss and planned to re-enter to pay for merchandise in her purse, created a reasonable doubt in their minds and spurred the deadlock.

(AP) During June Ohio had i its biggest decrease since 1969 in the number of new cases added to its Aid to Dependent Children rolls, acting State Welfare Director Robert B. Canary said Friday. The new cases totaled 165, he said, compared to 4,108 the month before and about 9,000 new cases last February. He attributed the decrease in part to increasing employment and said he is hopeful this is a trend "which will continue." He told a news conference that Ohio's jobless rate in 1969 was 1.1 per cent, compared to 4.5 per cent at the end of May.

The percentage has dropped from 5.5 per cent in February. (AP) Markets at a Canary conceded that in slow trading. creased employment as lower. the ADC dropoff good demand. seasonal." He strong, late demand.

McCrystal, presiding judge assigned to the trials of 30 former Lima State Hospital employes charged with patient abuse, has assigned several cases for July. However, the names of those to be tried and the dates will not be revealed until Monday after all attorneys involved have received their trial assignment list, the judge said. McCrystal's disclosure Friday that he has assigned the eliminates speculation that he might delay them until the Ohio Supreme Court reconvenes in September and rules on a writ to prohibit the change of venue from Allen County to Erie County.

The Supreme Court vent into its summer recess this week after denying a temporary writ sought by defense attorneys, but it indicated that the outcome of trials held outside of Allen, County might be subject to appeal if the permanent writ is later granted. Judge McCrystal said Friday that the trials he has assigned will be held Erie County and that they aren't expected to begin until mid-July because of routine scheduling delays. It is also expected that more than one trial will be assigned to commence on a single date, a move that had been planned to speed the trials in Allen County before the judge approved a state-initiated motion for changing the trial venue to another county. Any massive scheduling of trials could bring objections from the firm of Navarre, Rizor, DaPore and Allen which represents 28 of the 30 defendants. Previous court testimony has indicated that the firm would oppose multiple trials which could force it to ask for continuances, since the continuance action would harm its position in seeking speedy trials.

Thus far only one defendant, William Huff, has come to trial since the Nov. 30 indictments were issued by a state grand jury. The acting director said increasing employment might have had more impact on the ADC caseload except for new federal regulations and court decisions which have made it more difficult to take Cases; Since '69 off welfare. One of these was a federal court decision at Toledo which requires that recipients be given a hearing with benefit of counsel before he can be taken off, Canary said. It can take "two or three months to determine that someone no longer is eligible," he added. Chess Federation Trying -Hour Negotiating By STEPHENS BROENING REYKJAVIK, Iceland (AP) Organizers of the world chess championship said Friday the "whole match" depends on eleventh-hour negotiations between them and Bobby Fischer's lawyer on a new demand for more money by the American challenger.

Andrew Davis, Fischer's lawyer and confidant, arrived on a flight from New York. The plane was to have carried 29-year-old chess star to the site of his 24-game match with champion Boris Spassky of Russia. What Davis and officials of the Icelandic Chess Federation had to sort out was a fresh demand by Fischer for 30 per cent of the gate receipts collected during the match.
