THE TIMES HEPAID RECOR 3D Sot.w, SUmW 4. 1974 Johnson appointed ariners manager 11 2 reactions Martina Navratilova, left, weeps after losing to Janet Newberry. Right, Julie Anthony can't believe she just missed an easy shot. Both reactions came during the women's first round of the U.S. Open Thursday.

Friday's story, Back Page. Edward R. Golemboski, editor Jets tonight face angry Steelers PITTSBURGH (UPI) Ernie (Fats) Holmes is looking for you, Willie Joe Namath. and that means trouble. "I hope to have at least two sacks on Namath," said Holmes, one of the Pittsburgh Steelers' malevolent defensive front four, speaking of tonight's preseason game with the New York Jets here.

Namath, a native of nearby Beaver Falls, Pa will make his first local pro appearance. Namath missed the Jets' last two games here with injuries. "If I get a chanCe. I'm gonna break his finger," Holmes said. The reason: "Cuz he didn't take the time to invite me to his camp last year!" Holmes may have been joking about the reason for his ire.

But it is likely that both he and the rest of the Steelers will be out for blood, mainly because after two straight physically debilitating losses to the New York Giants and the Dallas Cowboys, the Super Bowl champions are ready to start dishing it out again. Namath said he was looking forward to returning home. "I don't know if it's because of seeing my family or playing the game The last tune I was home was Christmas and that's too long. "The game has no extra pressure for me to play well because I try to do that every time I go out, no matter who we're playing. But I think playing the Steelers, the world champions, wili serve as a basis of comparison of what we have to do and what's ahead of us.

"I have a lot of family and friends there and it's going to be fun playing there. I take a lot of ribbing from them, especially since the Steelers are the champs and the Jets are down right now. but I think for a change they'll be pulling for the Jets on Saturday night Steelers' coach Chuck Noll says that the most dis appointing aspect of the 4-2 exhibition season has been "some of the physical punishment we've taker from football teams. We're usually not that kind We're usually on the delivering end We have to get back to that Noll does not figure the Jets will make his team's job an easy one. despite the club's 1-4 record "Their offensive line is big and strong." he said "Their defensive line is big and Holmes calls the Jets' offensive line one of the three best in the National Football League Noll finds the wide open offensive system installed by new Jets' coach Lou Holtz puzzling "I couldn't describe it." he said "It's different that's the best word for it But whatever it is.

he says, it enables the Jets to possess the ball for long periods of time. SEATTLE (UPI) Darrell Johnson took over as manager of the expansion Seattle Mariners Friday, saying it was "exactly where I wanted to be" less than a year after he took the Boston Red Sox to the World Series. Johnson was fired by the Red Sox shortly after the All-Star game in July as his team struggled far off the pace in the American League's Eastern Division. But the veteran manager and former catcher admitted his excitement about joining the new Seattle team kept him awake the night before. "I'm so coming to Seattle," Johnson said at a news conference announcing his two-year contract with the Mariners, who will begin American League play in 1977.

"I'm just bubbling over. This is exactly where I wanted to be. I'm completely happy and enthusiastic about the Seattle ballclub. I've been in baseball long enough that it shouldn't affect me, but it does." He said he welcomed the chance to build a team from scratch instead of joining a club with a long history. Sisco qualifies for Southern 500 DARLINGTON, S.C.

(UPI) David Sisco toured the Darlington Speedway at 150.343 mph Friday in his Chevrolet to lead the second day of qualifying for Monday's Southern 500 stock car race. Sisco will hold position 13 in the 27th running of the race at the nation's oldest speedway Labor Day. David Pearson, who has won the Rebel 500 here six times but never taken the Southern 500, grabbed the pole position in the first day of qualifying Thursday with a speed of 154.699 mph. All but one of Friday's qualifiers drove Chevrolets. Jets sign 2 free agents NEW YORK UPI The New York Jets Friday signed two free agents, punter Duane Carrell and defensive lineman Dave Was-sick, and waived punter Leroy Clark, who had been with the Jets only a week.

Carrell, a third year pro, was with the Dallas Cowboys in 1974, the Los Angeles Rams in 1975 and in preseason games this year. Wassick, 6-foot-3 and 248 pounds, was injured in a preseason game with the Kansas City Chiefs last year and sat out the season after knee surgery. The Chiefs dropped him a week ago. Flare-up or no, Marchibroda stays BALnMORE (UPI) Baltimore Colts' owner Robert Irsay said Friday Ted Marchibroda will remain the team's head coach despite a flare-up Thursday night during which Marchibroda said he might be forced to resign. "I have the utmost confidence in Ted Marchibroda," Irsay said in a two-sentence statement through a club spokesman.

"He is our coach and will continue to be our coach." During a heated, 40-minute locker room dispute behind closed doors at Pontiac Stadium, Irsay indicated he might hire an additional coach to help Marchibroda, who won NFL Coach of the Year honors when he led to Colts to a 104 season in 1975. The newspaper quoted Marchibroda as saying after the incident, "I don't know if I've been fired or what. I may have to resign, I can't continue under these circumstances." Morrall activated by Dolphins MIAMI (UPI) The Miami Dolphins activated veteran backup quarterback Earl Morrall Friday in time for him to catch the plane to New Orleans where the Dolphins close out their National Football League exhibition schedule against the Saints tonight. The 42-year-old Morrall, starting his 21st NFL season, has seen little preseason game action because of a nagging hamstring muscle pull suffered in practice. Coach Don Shula has had him on inactive reserve for several weeks but has left little doubt that Morrall still is the No.

2 Dolphins' quarterback behind Bob Griese. Griese has been chosen to start against the Saints and play most of the way, but Shula also plans to give Morrall a little game time. DeBusschere gets Superstars post ROTONDA, Fla. (UPI) Dave DeBusschere, commissioner of the now-defunct American Basketball Association, was named Friday as commissioner of the annual Superstars competition. DeBusschere succeeds Charles B.

(Bud) Wilkinson, former University of Oklahoma football coach who served as commissioner for two years. DeBusschere will be on hand Sept. 11 when several National Basketball Association stars, including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Phil Smith, David Thompson and Earl Monroe, will begin preliminary competition in the $288,000 event. Bayi dropping 1,500 meters DAR ES SALAAM, Tanzania (UPI) Track star Filbert Bayi said Friday he will not compete again in the 1,500 meters, the event in which he holds the world record, until next January Bayi said he will concentrate instead on the mile and 800 meters until after the U.S. indoor season in January.

The 23-year-old army officer said there were not enough 1 500-meter competitions in which he could compete between now'and January to make training for that event worthwhile Asked whether he expected to set any records during the indoor season, Bayi said, "I cannot talk of records when I do not have enough competitions. I am sure (Kenya's) Mike Boit is going to break the 800 meters record one of these days because he is competing in a lot of international meetings Greek backs down; odds By JIMMY (The Greek) SNYDER LAS VEGAS All summer I have liked Nevele Thunder to win the three-year-old trotting stokes, and I might have gone with him to win todav's $263,524 Hambletonian except he drew the 18th post the outside in the second tier. No Greek is brave enough to favor a colt in this position, even with Stanley Dancer who has driven or trained four Ham bo winners since 1965 in the sulky I now rate Nevele Thunder at 8-1. The colt I like next, Tropical Storm, drew the next worst position, post 17, and now is 10-1. My choice is Lola's Express, in post 11 with Bruce Nickells, at 5-1.

In the Hambletonian it is good to choose an improving colt, and Lola's Express, son of the 1969 Hambo winner, Lindy's Pride, is just that. Pershing, who won last week at Indianapolis in heats of 1 58 3-5 and 1 58, is my second choice at 5-1 withco-favorite with Lola's Express. I rate Quick Pay third at 6-1. Today's college football games: Miami of Ohio 6 over North Carolina, Mississippi State 13 over North Texas State, North Carolina State 20 over Furman, Virginia Tech 3 over Wake Forest, Mississippi 6over Memphis State, Kansas 14 over Oregon State, San Jose 8 over Utah State, Tulsa 7 over Richmond. This weekend's NFL exhibition games: TODAY Los Angeles 8 over San Francisco, Oakland 14 over Seattle, Pittsburgh 13 over NY Jets, Miami 7 over New Orleans, NY Giants 3 over San Diego, Cincinnati 7 over Tampa Bay, Dallas 6 over Houston.

SUNDAY Minnesota 1 over Denver, Philadel phia even against New England. Monday, at Ruidoso Downs in New Mexico, the biggest purse in history will be run the AU-Amencan Quarter Horse Futurity at 440 yards with $766,000 to be divided among the ten qualifiers The winner will get $330,000. That figures out to about $14,500 per second for the winning horse, since the race probably will be won around 21 and a fraction seconds. Boming into the race with a best time for a quarter-mile of 21.76 seconds. I rate the filly Real Win at 7-5.

She is undefeated in six starts and looked impressive in winning the Rainbow Futurity. The gelding Lord Winslot is my co-favorite at 7-5, with a best time of 21 77 and a record as a seasoned stakes winner Mr. Glory Oh, a colt with a best time of 21.73, is 4-1. He is undefeated but has not really been tested. Coming Forth is 4-1.

with a best quarter mile at 21.77 seconds. This filly is a consistent threat. Megahartz is a tough colt, always close Best tune is 21.91, 4-1 to win. Topless Dancer, a filly is 10-1 with a best time of 21.79. She was the only one of seven supplemental horses who qualified.

Divine Liz is 20-1 with a best time of 21.82. It is the filly's first crack at topnotchers Louton's Angel, a filly, with best time of 21.91 at 20-1. Improving. Pass Your Glass. 50-1.

Best time at a quarter-mile for this filly is 21.93. Coming Easy, a colt with a best time of 21.93, is 50-1. He is in questionable condition and may not start. FwMNtwjMpff Syndic..
