F-6 Sun Nov 1 2 1 978 The Modesto Bee Upset Huskers bop Sooners The LosAngelesTimes LINCOLN Neb When the game was on the line Saturday Nebraska ran the ball and Oklahoma fumbled it The result was a 17-14 win for fourth- ranked Cor-nhuskers over the previously undefeated team No 1 in the polls most of the season Nebraska quarterback Tom Sorley threw the big passes that gave his side a chance to win in the fourth quarter on sprints by tailback Rick Bems and a tiebreaking 24- yard field goal by Billy Todd For the Sooners halfback Billy Sims ran for 159 yards and scored both the tou-chowns on tackle- breaking bursts of 44 and 30 yards net was 159 yards (on 25 carries) but in the fourth quarter when the world crashed down on him Stretching for a few more inches at the Nebraska 6 to set up what would have been the go-ahead touchdown Sims was creamed by two Huskers and fumbled the ball away with three minutes left and Nebraska leading by three Defensive Player of the Game Jim Pillen fell on it for Nebraska to end the last chance Sims fumbled twice and both were recovered by Nebraska after two long Oklahoma drives to the Husker 20 and 6-yard lines The Sooners fumbled nine times and turned it over six times That was too many The Huskers outgained Oklahoma 361 yards to 339 with 113 yards by Berns John Rund watches the ball bounce away from Kelly Phelps Sting Tennessee 31-14 Wl Fighting Irish keep major bowl hopes alive Sugar for Penn St? State and earn a tie for first place in the Missouri Valley Connerence football race It was ninth win in 11 games and boosted the Golden Hurricanes into a tie with New Mexico State both with 4-1 Valley SOUTH BEND Ind John Krimm blocked a punt early in the second half to set up freshman Pete first touchdown which put Notre Dame ahead to stay and the Irish rolled to their seventh straight eliminated from title contention Byrd took a 17-yard Smith pass in for a touchdown with 5:16 left in the second quarter and caught a 3-yard scoring strike early in the third period The victory would
