Unification elementary program could suffer as a result If unification is approved in June the three elementary districts and the THSD would be unified under one seven-man board elected at large Main Argument The man argument for unification is that it allows for a more coordinated education program from kindergarten through the 12th grade The Stanislaus County Committee on School District Organization will hold a public hearing and information session on the unification plan at 7:30 pm May 24 in the Turlock district board room In addition the Town Hall Forum Committee is planning a public forum on the proposal In other action last night the TESD board postponed taking any action on the proposed 1972-73 school calendar despite the recommendation of Supt Thom as Hedden that the calendar be approved Teachers Argue Representatives of the Turlock Teachers Association argued that they had not been given a fair opportunity to study and react to the proposed calendar Hedden argued that the calen-ar had been brought up at several negotiation sessions and that no agreement had been reached have delayed this long he told the board However the trustees voted 3-2 to postpone action on the calendar until next month the TTA and district representatives will hold another meet-and-con-fer session tomorrow at which time the calendar will be considered The TTA and district are still involved in a hassle over salary and other requests for the present school year as well as a new list of items for the upcoming 1972-73 academic year Bee Photo The $300000 Olympic-size pool honors the committee to look into the possibility of establishing an ambulance service for the community State Will Start Turn Lane Job On Route 120 OAKDALE A spokesman for the State Division of Highways in Stockton announced today that a new two-way left turn lane will be installed on Route 120 between 5th Avenue and Johnson Avenue here The use of this type of turning lane has been effective in reducing McGee D-Wyo called yesterday for price controls on raw timber to head off rising lumber prices The Wyoming Democrat said Agriculture Secretary Earl Butz had proposed more timber be sold from government lands in an effort to hold down prices if lumber prices are indeed rising that significantly it is time for the Price Commission to take McGee said McGee noted that raw timber stumpage was not subject to price controls and said manufacturers had been permitted to pass on higher costs increases in the cost of homebuilding must be taken serously it seems to me we should expect the powers of the Price Commission to be exer-j cised to insure against the injection of unneeded and unwar-1 ranted costs into this important segment of our economy before puttting too much reliance on Mr formula of stripping the national forests of more trees in what could prove to be a futile attempt to force housing costs McGee said in a statement Injury Suffered Friday Claims Atwater Girl 15 MERCED Kathy Marie De-Gregori 15 who was injured Friday night in a two-gar collision at Paul and Rose Avenues Atwater died at about 11:20 last night in Merced General Hospital Miss DeGregori was the daughter of Mr and Mrs Joseph DeGregori of 2226 Hull Atwater California Highway Patrol units from San Francisco Oakland Tracy Los Banos and Merced aided in transporting blood from a San Francisco hospital to Merced over weekend for the girl Hospital authorities said she received more than 30 pints of blood during three operations Saturday She was the 20th traffic fatality this year compared to 15 at the same time last year Two Inmates Escape From Sierra Center TUOLUMNE CITY Peter Dudley Olson 27 and David Charles Hall 28 inmates of the Sierra Conservation Center yesterday escaped from a training session on conservation work in the Riverside Area of the Stanislaus National Forest 2 miles northeast of here Both inmates were last seen at 11:30 am and were missed shortly after the noon lunch break The inmates took their lunch and a canteen of water Olson serving time for forgery from Yolo County arrived at the center in March and Hall convicted of attempted robbery in San Mateo County has been at the center since December Still at large is Edward Anthony DeGries 34 who walked off a brush clearing job Thure day four miles northeast Groveland of Board Vows Raises For Lode Jurists SONORA The Tuolumne County Board of Supervisors yesterday promised a pay raise to the five judicial district judges after hearing complaints that they were the lowest paid in the state The judges of the First Third and Fifth Judicial District! courts receive $599 monthly and in the Second and Fourth Dis- tricts the pay is $428 Judge Walter Ronten of the TURLOCK Trustees of the Turlock Elementary School District have gone on record in favor of the prposed unification of all districts within the Turlock High School District Voters within the Turlock Chatom and Keyes Elementary School Districts will go to the polls in June to decide whether to approve the proposed unification The Keyes and Chatom boards are strongly opposed to unification the THSD board is remaining neutral on the issue In supporting the unification plan TESD trustees said their prime concern was a $20 per pupil annual state bonus to individual districts which endorse unification even though overall the plan is defeated 60000 Yearly To the TESD that bonus amounts to some $60000 annually without which the district tax rate would have to be raised at least 12 cents per $100 assessed valuation The TESD favored unification in 1965 and 1967 and has received the state bonus since that time Trustee Oscar Holt was the lone board member opposed to urging voter approval of the unification plan he said he felt that under a unified district most emphasis would be given to the secondary level and the Go Kart Track Of Supervisor The Merced County Board of Supervisors approval of a conditional use permit allowing a go kart track on the outskirts of Atwater and the subsequent decision not to reconsider its action has been called a Supervisor Fred Wack of Atwater who failed to get a sec- nd for his motion yesterday to reconsider the action approving the track said the Planning recommendation for approval and the approval was for the benefit of a special interest group The Merced application was opposed by several residents and appeal for reconsideration by the supervisors was presented by Ronald Taylor and Dennis Holz attorneys for Merced Le gal Services Ask Recommendation Taylor and Holz said the Planning Commission had approved asking for the Merced County Health recommendation on the application and then had approved the request before receiving the health comments A letter from the health department in opposition to the track was sent to Atwater City Administrator Thomas Cochran the day after" the initial approval of the go-kart applica tion In other action yesterday the board agreed town values and were not interested in attracting industry or having large apartment buildings The master plan has to go to the Planning Commission and then to the supervisors for final approval Finally the supervisors agreed to share one-third of the $613 monthly cost for installation of a 400 watt mercury vapor light at the intersection of Proenix Lake Road and Highway 108 The State Division of Highways will pay two thirds of the cost The installation was requested by the County Road Department SONORA City Engineer Roy Fredricksen will prepare plans to be reviewed at the May 15 City Council meeting for second-phase construction of a downtown park adjacent to Sonora Creek The council this week asked Fredrickson to proceed after he reported the first phase is now completed The park is going in on land donated by Mrs William Coffill after a $900000 fire swept through part of downtown Sonora almost two years ago The fire wiped out the main building of Kelley Motors now the site of the park The most visible work completed so far are a stairway leading from Washington Street to the park at a lower level and a large redwood pergola The curb gutter and sidewalk on Washington Street also have been replaced over the park An ancient wall was reinforced underneath the sidewalk and part of Washington Street The work to date has cost $11-000 Plans Sketch Fredricksen will prepare a sketch of phase two improvements that could consist of adding concrete to the park floor planting trees and constructing a museum building and public restrooms Councilman Earl Akin said he is against public restrooms because of major maintenance problems An often-discussed proposal for improving Green Street at the rear of the park will not be included because of lack of funds In another matter the coun cil set May 20-27 as cleanup week when the city force will pick up all leaves grass cuttings and twigs that are placed out for removal Also the council took under review a request by the Employes Association representative Police Sgt Jack Mager to have the employes covered by the state retirement system Councilman Ronald Stearn Empire Seniors Will Have Potluck Lunch EMPIRE The Empire Senior Citizens Club will huld a potluck luncheon and game period from 11 am to 5 pm tomorrow in the community hall here Pen to all elderly persons including members of other senior amount for 30 years to cover prior Sonora service of all employes The employes do not have a city-sponsored retirement system As Mager explained it the city would have to pay 116 per cent of the payroll including 441 per cent for back retirement for all employes ex cept policemen and firemen The raise for policemen and firemen would be 1427 per cent including 167 per cent for prior service The employes would contribute 7 per cent of their salary Mager said the retirement would be based on a formula involving the three highest years of pay with an employe receiving 2 per cent a year of the formula for each year served Finally the council indicated it would award the city insurance contract May 15 to Tuolumne County Realtor Co the present agent and the only bidder The insurance from the Pacific Indemnity Co will cost $10396 a year compared with the present premium of $7769 a year Alan Dexter Will Be In Delta Play STOCKTON-Veteran Hollywood and New York actor Alan Dexter is
