Embracing- tba Beat Good In tba Market F. OBERKCETTEB, NO. 118 SOUTH MAIN-8T. liiOIJ Mexican Soap Boo I I I season baa been peculiarly remarkable for aevere casea of diseases, a Pantaokspb representative look tbe trouble to Investigate tbe condition of public health In general and tbs so-called malaria in particular. Pays! clans, quack doctors, old women, horse doc tors, tlspplng doctors, mediums, clairvoy anta, and even corn and wart eure po meo were subjected to a rigid cross fire to produce great chunks of knowledge on tbe mysteries of disease and its remedies; and after all the trouble and vexation It was dlccovered.wbat everybody knows, tbat last summer and this 1.11 bas been the healthiest sesson we have had In twenty yeais.

It was found there had been three or four fatal cssea of bilious fever like that of Mr. Travia and Mr. Davenport- cases where individual ailments preceded ordinary attacks of fever. In some cases. when vigorous persons are down with bilious fever, It Is found tbat reckless exposure to catchlug cold is the inciting cause, instead of climatic condltioua, but the climate often Is made to aboulder tbe blame, though per.

fectly innocent of any offense. people sometimes get hot and alt down oo log or the curb-stone and talk politics till tbey sneeze, ana men go arouna and com plain of ny fever, biliousness, and curse the cumate. when the whole fault their own. Tbe physicians think tbe few casea of typbo malaria this year were of tbe most ordinary kind, but thai ibe newspspers bad given them undue prominence, and that nervous ana oiooa aisoiaers ana debility had more to do with the fatalities than the condition of the climate; that, with people of ordinary health all aucb cases are easily controlled. Most or tbe sickness this year has been with children, and with them not nearly so much a last year.

There baa not been much eickness this aeaaon, compar. atively, and the must at any one time ia now ana siuce tne miaaie oi September, when the damp weatner commenced. One of the oldest physlcisns In the city ss aerie that thia year hi bealihier than last, and tbat the two are healthier than any in the past twenty; mat me year inst was conspic, uous for malarial diseases, and worse by far than either oi the three years pi seeding it tbat malarial attacks on constitutions recked by indiscretions should not be brought to bear against tbe character of ou climate; that one-half of theaicknesa here is cautea by carelessly taking eoias, tne avoia ance oi wnicn wouia. save nan toe doctors' billa and undertakers' expenses. There Is, however, something curious and Inexplicable lo tbe fact that, after a lung beaithy period like Ibepaat aummer.it la gen, erally followed by a fall and winter of unusual aicknesa.

Thia point abould impress old settlers who know all should pay special regard to precautions about tak. lug colas ibis lull, sua about shining cloth ng to suit climatic changes; also, about diet, and the timely use of catnip tea, soap suds, the oatotuo ana not once. Bleomlngton is pre eminently healthy city, and it win be rememoerea both by pby. siciaus and tbe people generally, that when epidemics have been abroad In tbe land, it snares lightly with contagions, as in the put epidemlcaof small pox, mearlei, and acarltt fever; and, as far as malaria, ague or pneumonia are concerned, this place is fortunate. compared with tne Wabash bottoms, or the outbern part oi the state, where the chins are severe as to make tbe hickory trees reinble and shake tbelr limbs off, csusing maidens lo turn prematurely lean and cadav erous, and young men in their Kfay hairs lo go down in sorrow to their graves.

ABOUT MALAHIA ITSELF, and typbo malarial fevers, so much has been said of late as to impel us to make a few suc cinct observations on tbe subject. Tbe term malarial lever induces me lorms kuown as intermittent, remittent, fever and ague, bilious fever, bilious remittent, dtc 'Ibe present custom of many being to speak of aov oi mese lorms as malarial rrver. wntie typhoid belongs to quite another class, known as continuous levers. It ie not in the province of us todetsll fully or technically the modes of se'sure or the organic changes wrought by these affections, but simply io csii attention to a lew facts. What ia malaria? The writer dots not know.

nor does be know of anybody wuo does. It has been called marah-mlaain, but tb.n It Is not found In all awampy localities, nor does elevation wholly rid us of tbe pest. At flvd thousand feet above sea-level it is said to be absent, except, perhaps, in some of tbe Coio-rsdo mountain lands or the sandy allu vium of Ibe valleys subject to yearly over. are most productive of ihe poison. hicb seems to be generated under tbe influ ence of tbe sun's heat.

Drainage and cultl; vation are excellent preventive measures. Doubtless It is a specific poison. Br some this is said to exist in the form of parasites. hich have been named baculm malaria, and hich the discoverers affirm tbey captured bile tbe parasites wete flying in the air. Tbe best protective against the poiton Is to prevent lis development, and for this purpose tbe cultivation of tbe sunflower and eucalyptus or fever-tree in the infected places has been most salutary.

Besides the hygienic influence sffordtd by these growths, tbey may be turned to good account financially. snd the experiment is well worth a trial in ilinois. In malarial diseases the liver and spleen are tbe organs chit fly afiected, though other parts share io tbe disturbance, and tbe evil done may be very extensive, Ibe kidneys, intestines and brain undergoing some form of degeneration. However, Ihe severer ex. oressions of the disorder are not so frequently observed in some persons, botb in the profes sion and amoog the laity are prone to believe, but its minor manifestations are numerous.

Ttpboid fever is essentially a different dls. ease, whose most serious cxpres ion Is found the Intestines. ll Is an intestinal lever, an bdominal typbus. Tbe early organic banges wrought by tbis disease are in tbe bowels and spleen. In the former there are found (omitting pathological eteps) ulceration of Ihe Intestinal glands ana the mem.

branous lining ol the lube. Digestion and nutrition are thus interfe'ed with. bile from tbe congested and ulcer ous psrts an abnormal and poisonous secretion is poured into the Intestinal csnsl, and from the sum of these factors there results diarrhiet, fever and delirium. But this not all At the ulcers evade and excavate the glands and intestinal wallf, vessels are laid bare or ruptured by tbls means, or from sloughing, so tbat hemorrhage supervenes, worst oi all. perioratton or tbe bowel occurs at tbe fl jor of the excavations and carries the patient beyond human help.

Now as to ty. bo-malarial fever; it is high souodingand scarea the patient, but In reality there is no such tbing. Typhoid fever may occur in a person poisoned by alarla. and the disease be modified there- the mortiid anatomy Is tbat of typhoid fever only. The more Intelligent physicians used tbe term typbo.

malarial at an error in teaching, aod now use It only in an accommodated sense, not well understood by tue peop e. 1 yphoia lever is also gener. ally believed to spring from a specific poison. and tbe bug men say It la of parasitic origin. out II flitters Irom tbe malarial bug.

He also avoids the lungs, not being able to endure roach wind, and il lently. stealthily travels along tbe tortuous geatlve tube until he arrives at a locality oown to anatomists as Peyer's patches, hich be Immediately se's-s upon as the fortress from which his minions shall go forth to compass the death of his host. For. tunstely these diseases are prevailing to but limited extent, a contrary and erroneous impression having gained currency through confounding of terms.

To avoid these, ana all kindred diseases, follow the Bcotcbmai'l advice: Keep the feet warm, tbe head cool, the bowels open and fear Ood. Tbe one will do for lb 'are and th other for the 'ereaf- ter." Prof Horaford's Bskiag powder the Strongest Prof. Wm. M. Hablrsbaw.
