In las day the bell performed ita duty nobly. Fire Chief Roland Behrend remembers the accounts of its use told him by older firemen who have since passed a ay.

Hew Bell Worked The original fire alarm system was the Game well System, or telegraph alarm. When a fire was turned in from any of the alarm boxes located throughout the city, the number of the alarm box would be sounded electrically on the fire bell, thus giving firemen the location of the fire. This also served as a warning to other vehicles in the vicnlty of the fire station to clear the streets. Another early purpose of the bell was to call the firemen back to the station In the event a fire alarm was sounded during their luneh period. At that time firemen worked seven days a week' and were allowed three periods a day to go out for their meali u'r Jacob, aa of Rutlaad.
