Lacassine put on the most thrilling rally in tournament history to defeat towering Athens, 49-48, for the Class ular title on Shannon Cary's spectactapin in the final seconds. Only West Lake in 1962 has ever brought a title back to this area. Plainview raced past Marthaville, 72-67, to claim the Class crown while two defending champions were belted out and another successfully defended its laurels. Powerful Jesult of New Or- (Class c.

Pandemonium Hits Lacassine Fans SHREVEPORT (Spl.) -Pandemonium reigned for a full minutes at the south end of Hirsch Memorial Youth center here Saturday, afternoon as a veritable of deliriously happy Lacassine fans swarmed over their favorites. Besides themselves with joy and limp from the excitement of the fantastic finish, the Cardinal fans put on the greatest exhibition of hugging and backslapping in the history of organized basketball. Almost smothered in the middie of it all was coach Roy Singletary, who certainly must have stopped grinning sometime before going to bed that night. "I can't believe It, I just can't believe it," Singletary kept repeating, And neither could a record afternoon crowd, which was treated to the most fantastic finish in tournament history.

It was a fitting finish to an amazingly successful season! which saw the Cardinals finish with a 53-3 record. The Redbirds closed out the season with the state's longest winning streak, sailing to 23 straight victories. The outcome was a perfect example of what a team can beaten, accomplish if it refuses to be and if ever a team could have resigned itself to defeat, it was Lacassine. The Cardinals had to do it the hard way, playing without their team leader, Walter Gotreaux, who foulded out with more than six minutes left in the game. But the Redhirds just wouldn't quit, and the last second roles of Shannon Cary and David Degeytar thought pulled them through.

Only seconds later Go-1 treaux was called for his fifth personal on a basket by Trojan Murray Greer. Jumpers by Degeyter and Cary offset a bucket by Athens' 6-5 Walter Hays and the score! was tied at 41-all with 5:16 remaining.

The towering Athens team, making hay on the boards Gotreaux out, promptly reeled off five straight points before Degeyter drove in for a bucket at the 3:07 mark, but when Mike Edwards tallied for the Trojans for a 48-45 lead with only 2:38 left, it looked as if the jig was up. Cary quickly banked one and then both Buzzy Buckner of Athens and Cary missed on oneand one free throw attempts and Athens had the ball with time running out. An offensive foul call gave the Cardinals the ball with 51 seconds left and senior Thomas Miller hit on a follow shot to cut the margin to 48-47. Then I came the series of events which were to prove the most spec-; tacular since the tournament began four years ago. Degeyter, drove promptly stole the in for a layup attempt under heavy guard.

Just when it appeared as if the shot were going to bound off the rim, Cary came sailing through for what proved to be the winning with 18 sec-' onds left. But the game was far from over as Degeyter fouled Geer in the act of shooting with eight Athens seconds remaining and! had its chance to win it. But Greer, obviously, unnerved by the the situation, missed both tosses badly and Cary hustled over to tie the ball up on the rebound. The strapping 6-2 junior got the tip to Degeyter who tan off the remaining six seconds' and the championship belonged to Lacasstre. Degeyter, regaining the shooting form which had deserted him Thursday's semifinal victory over Belmont, bombed: in 19 points to lead all scorers and Cary added 12 points and 13 rebounds, also a game high.

Edwards, hitting all seven of his field goal altempts, scored 16 markers for and Hays had 14., Plainview, which in the words of one amazed onlooker "must start running when they get off the bus, simply ran the taller Marthaville team to death white coming from 11 points behind early in the second period to trail by only 36-34 at halftime. The Hornets, pressing the Hawks to distraction, were still full of fire at the start of the second half and to compound Marthaville's mounting woes, Plainview ace Roy Johnson began to find the range from the top of the cireic. Johnson bombed in live kets in the period and Plainview took a 56-48 lead into the final stanza. Marthaville regrouped for one last effort and managed to tie the count at 60-60 with three minutes left, but the Hornets rose to the occasion and slammed the door. C.

W. Strother, a demon defender and deadeye shooter. whipped in four baskets thereafter and that was that. Strother wound up with 23 points, high for the game, and Johnson added 18. Both Jimmy Procell and Gary Killen scored 20 for Marthaville.
